Hopster is the world's first hop-flavored soda – without alcohol or bittering agents – and I tested it for you. To be more precise, I first noticed it at a friend's house, who had stockpiled it in their fridge as if there were no tomorrow. 😉 Naturally, I was intrigued and opened a bottle of the non-alcoholic hop soda. Admittedly, I like to drink certain things straight from the bottle, and I would have done the same with Hopster, as it's a rather "cool," trendy drink for relaxed evenings and cozy get-togethers. My host was faster, and before I knew it, the soda was in my glass, and I was drinking from it. The first thing I noticed when I put it to my lips was the exceptionally intense aroma. Very "hoppy" and unfamiliar to my nose. So I was all the more surprised and pleasantly impressed by the first sip.
Hopster tastes very refreshing, not at all bitter, slightly sweet, intensely flavorful, and—in my opinion—completely different than expected—very floral and fruity, and the taste reminded me slightly of fresh alpine herbs. Since there's no alcohol in this delicious lemonade, my glass was empty in no time, and I remembered the fridge full of Hopster. (I would definitely recommend chilling the lemonade before drinking it; it tastes even better that way!) By the time I left, I had finished four bottles—but I haven't been invited back to my apartment since. 😉
Naturally, I was curious about the exact ingredients and what goes into it. Hopster uses only award-winning hop varieties like "Taurus," "Tradition," "Perle," and "Cascade" from the Hallertau region, the world's largest hop-growing area. This hop-flavored soda should absolutely not be confused with or equated to beer. So, to all the women who want to present their husbands with "healthy beer"—unfortunately, no. 😉 Hopster soda and beer have only one ingredient in common: hops. In beer, hops are generally used to make it bitter, which isn't the case with this soda. The hop extract, with its fruity aromas, simply provides a pleasant taste. If you want to know exactly what's in Hopster soda: it contains natural mineral water, sugar, carbon dioxide, hop and green tea extract, citric acid, ascorbic acid, and sodium citrate. The essential hop oil, containing the aforementioned hop aromas, is extracted from the hop blossoms – called cones. This is then combined with internationally acclaimed Kondrauer Gerwig spring mineral water, and nothing stands in the way of a refreshing Hopster lemonade. Incidentally, Hopster is produced by Kondrauer – a small Bavarian mineral spring.
Hopster hop lemonade is currently only available in restaurants and bars. At the end of this article, you can find out where to buy or order Hopster. For home use, you can conveniently order the lemonade online from the Hopster website's online shop. A case of twelve 0.25l bottles costs €13.68 including deposit and excluding shipping. If you can't get enough, there's also a 3-month subscription for €39.60, which includes a total of 36 bottles and only a one-time shipping fee of €2.90. Delivery is available throughout Germany via Hermes (within approximately two to three business days), and you can pay either by bank transfer or PayPal. You can order Hopster, for example, at... I also discovered online that you can make fantastic Hopster applesauce from Hopster lemonade. Nothing new there: my cooking skills are limited, so I tried it out with a friend, and lo and behold: the applesauce tasted really delicious. Simply pour the tasty Hopster lemonade over it instead of water and enjoy. As you can see, you can not only drink it, but also cook with it. This fun idea was invented by Jonas Seidl, a Munich-based (of course!) certified brewing engineer and water sommelier. His love for hops was already strong during his studies, and since it wasn't going to be "just a simple beer," he knew early on that hops could do more and that the years of research he'd put in would pay off. Especially now, on these hot days, Hopster has been a real blessing, as I need to cut down a bit on my Coke Zero addiction while still wanting a drink that's completely satisfying in terms of taste. Thanks, Hopster! 😉 Not at all bitter, as mentioned (which I really don't like), very refreshing, and at €0.99 per bottle, an affordable new indulgence. I've already tried a lot of delicious new drinks on the market. Hopster will definitely be a staple in my fridge from now on – taste really is all about hops! 😉
Another piece of information for the coming weekend (July 25th/26th): The Munich Beer Islands festival is taking place, and Hopster will be there. It doesn't get more Hopster/hops fan than that! A nice promotion, in my opinion…
