Käfer Bistro – Breakfast, schnitzel, lunch and more at the airport – The Käfer brand and company are probably familiar to any foodie among you. But have you ever been to the Käfer Bistro at Munich Airport? No? Have you only ever rushed past it before your flight? Wrong! I know this for a fact because I tested the bistro as part of my "Bianca's Tasty Tour" at Munich Airport (#biancatastytour). I was there recently for lunch and want to tell you about it.
First of all: Forget the idea that the Käfer Bistro at Munich Airport belongs to the Käfer delicatessen on Prinzregentenstrasse in Munich. It doesn't. The Käfer Bistro is much more than just a restaurant; it's part of Allresto, the catering subsidiary of Munich Airport, which operates around two-thirds of the airport's restaurants. This includes the stylish Käfer Bistro, conveniently located just before security. It offers a great breakfast as well as excellent lunch and dinner options.
Ambiance, service and food at Käfer Bistro
Let's get straight to my visit and the taste test. I was there at lunchtime, and the time allowed for a refreshing starter in the form of Prosecco mixed with Aperol Spritz – always a good idea! As soon as I entered, I was offered a cozy table in the back of the bistro. This small room is quite different from the rest of the bistro, which features rather dark, simple wooden furniture and a substantial, also dark, bar. In this small room, there are about six elegantly set tables with plenty of natural light and a cozy atmosphere. Don't get me wrong: the main dining room is also cozy, but the smaller room is definitely more stylish. You can sit here for a minute or so and completely forget you're in an airport – only the view through the windows of departure area A serves as a slight reminder. For the ambiance alone, it gets top marks.

The main course: Stuffed baked potato with vegetable skewers
The service was, of course, equally friendly and attentive at every table. I had only been seated briefly when I was presented with the food and wine menu. The weekly specials were already tucked into the cloth napkins at all the tables, which had been pre-set. I was looking forward to my lunch and noticed that my appetite grew more and more as I browsed the menu. A lovely spot at Munich Airport.
It was time to choose what to eat. It was quite a hot day, and I wasn't in the mood for heavy fare, like the Wiener Schnitzel (veal) with potato salad (€19.50) or the six Nuremberg-style bratwurst with Ismaning sauerkraut (€13). I browsed through the menu and was quite taken with the bistro's "Regional Line" for Bavarian home cooking (schnitzel, sausages, veal stew, Grandma's potato soup, etc.). In other words, a separate category for all the dishes and specialties from the Bavarian region. I like that sort of thing. The choice became increasingly difficult – so many choices, so much to decide – and I flipped back to the front of the menu for the house special. That's what I ended up ordering for my starter, main course, and dessert. (...no matter how hot it is – it's never too hot for dessert... ;-)).
My menu
My first course was a creamy chanterelle soup with fresh chanterelles (for €8). It was quite a generous portion, and the dollop of cream in the middle, which slowly melted, added to its richness. I had to leave a little for myself, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to manage my main course. The soup itself was delicious. A delicate mushroom flavor and the bite of the chanterelles made it a perfect starter that was quite filling. I enjoyed it, and any soup lover should definitely try it.
The main course was very interesting for me. I deliberately chose a dish that isn't found on every run-of-the-mill menu. I opted for Mediterranean grilled vegetable skewers with a stuffed baked potato (for €13.50). My soup bowl was cleared, I was asked if I was ready for the main course, I confirmed, and didn't have to wait long for my beautifully presented main course. As you can see from the cover photo, I made the right choice. My food smelled wonderfully of fresh vegetables, a flavorful dip, and cheese, along with the potatoes. My mouth was already watering just looking at it (and taking pictures). The generous dip, served in a separate bowl, had a pleasant, not-too-intense flavor and perfectly complemented the overall taste. I love potatoes and vegetables, but I've rarely experienced such a delicious combination, which was certainly due to the exceptionally creamy and cheesy filling of the potato and the marinade on the grilled skewers. For vegetarians, vegetable lovers, and anyone who wants to try something different from the norm, this main course, while fundamentally simple, is exceptionally creative and perfectly executed. I left a little on my plate, which I regretted because it was so delicious. My dessert wasn't planned, but I simply couldn't resist the offered crème brûlée. Strangely enough, I even managed the entire dish, including the crisp sugar-caramel crust and the berries arranged on the side. 😉 Delicious, delicious, delicious. Three times over, and the whole menu – simply wonderful. I wasn't disappointed at all during my entire stay and was completely satisfied.
Breakfast at Käfer Bistro
For those who prefer breakfast (and are early risers), Käfer Bistro is also an option. It's open daily from 5:00 AM to 10:30 AM, 365 days a year. These hours, as well as the opening times (Sunday to Friday 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM and Saturday 5:00 AM to 6:00 PM), are naturally also due to the needs of airport passengers and flight schedules. The breakfast menu is impressive: five set breakfasts ranging from €8.50 to €19.50, various egg dishes (from €4.60), and numerous additional options (from €1) are available. I'll definitely be having breakfast there sometime (…and trying the Wiener Schnitzel – that's already arranged) and will share my experience with you on my page afterwards. (My first choice would be, for example, the "Vitamin Kick" breakfast (for €8.50) with fresh fruit salad, bread basket, honey and Alpine butter.)
Key facts and personal conclusion
Finally, a word of advice: Käfer Bistro also has a takeaway area. Coffee, smoothies, sandwiches, and fruit – all available to go. If you're planning to eat there with a larger group, it's a good idea to make a reservation in advance. The small, back room is particularly popular for quieter gatherings. There isn't a set lunch menu, but there is a weekly changing special (see my menu). The bistro seats 75 people, and there are also some tables and chairs outside. The menu caters to both the general public and, of course, to travelers in a hurry. But it's also worth making the trip simply to eat at Käfer Bistro. Be sure to ask for the wine list! Really good bottled wines from Italy, Austria, and Germany are available starting at €24. Wines are also served by the glass.
My personal conclusion today is short but clear: Go there! Quality, value for money, service, presentation, ambience and everything that makes for a good restaurant visit is perfect at the cozy Käfer Bistro.
