Biancas Tasty Tour Flughafen MuenchenWhat can you expect at Aunt Ju's Food Workshop at Munich Airport?
One thing I really enjoy about my many restaurant reviews and visits is that I always end up in new places, meet new people, and of course, try food I haven't tasted before. Tante Ju's Speisewerkstatt was one such place. I had the opportunity to chat with the restaurant manager, learn about the history of the restaurant, and, of course, sample the dishes. Munich Airport's visitor park has a lot to offer, with various tours and attractions, and the restaurant there, Tante Ju's Speisewerkstatt, is definitely worth a visit. Families with children, tour groups, tourists, and even locals alike will find this self-service restaurant with its counter and Bavarian-inspired cuisine appealing. At Tante Ju's, you order your food at the counter, having selected it beforehand either from the menu or from the menu boards above the bar.

History, furnishings and ambience

The restaurant has been located in the visitor park at Munich Airport since September 2012. Even its name has an interesting story behind it, as the restaurant is named after the "Junkers Ju 52" on display there. This is the three-engine, fully restored propeller plane with which Carl August Freiherr von Gablenz made a spectacular Pamir flight for Lufthansa in 1937 to open up a new flight route. Cool, right? You can read the whole story on the first page of the Tante Ju's Speisewerkstatt menu. "Speisewerkstatt" (Dining Workshop) is the name chosen because it aptly reflects the history of the aircraft and their restoration, and also because the restaurant's interior is intentionally designed to resemble a "modern workshop." The high ceilings and white brick wall, the fully glazed front, the counter and bar in the back, as well as old cable drums used as tables (custom-made for the restaurant) and springboks (like the ones you might remember from school) serving as benches all contribute to the cozy atmosphere. Tante Ju's Restaurant is a comfortable place, and the blend of modern and rustic elements, along with the view of the tower and the visitor's hill, makes it a truly inviting spot. Pin-up girls adorn the walls, the exposed and painted pipes on the ceiling add a touch of rustic style, and the upbeat background music completes the harmonious overall ambiance. A major plus, especially for families, is the available mini-golf course, the spacious playground with its beer garden and outdoor seating area (also for dining), and the rides for children and the whole family.

Offer, selection and evaluation of the dishes from Aunt Ju's Food Workshop

The menu is divided into "Classics," salads (from €3.70), desserts (from €2.40), and drinks (coffee, beer, soft drinks, white and red wines, and spirits). There is also a weekly menu that changes regularly and offers three daily specials, or two on weekends. These daily specials always include one dish from the "Classics" menu. For younger guests, there is a separate children's menu in landscape DIN A4 format with coloring pages, offering children's meals (main course + 0.3l soft drink + Chupa Chups lollipop from €5.80) as well as individual main courses for children (chicken nuggets, schnitzel, potato pancakes, pasta with tomato sauce, hamburgers, etc. from €2.80).

The Texas Airliner Burger

The classic dishes at Aunt Ju's Restaurant start at €7.20 (for penne al Bolognese with shaved Grana Padano) and go up to a maximum of €10.90 (for example, the giant schnitzel "Wiener Art" with fries or potato salad (pork schnitzel!) or the "Texas Airliner" burger with beef, iceberg lettuce, tomato, cucumber, onion, bacon, cheddar, fried egg with crispy onion rings and sour cream). There's also a second beef burger (€9.90), a cheeseburger (€9.50), and currywurst (the same as at...). Smokey Joe's) or turkey gyros with tzatziki and fries (€8.90). Those who enjoy fish and chips, meaning crispy fried hake fillet in batter with fries (€8.90), Käsespätzle with fried onions (€8.20), or oven-fresh Leberkäse with potato salad (€6.90) will likely find something to their liking at Tante Ju's. For a healthier option, the Caesar salad with toasted bread croutons and shaved Grana Padano (€7.90) is a great choice. At the bar, there's also an ice cream counter offering Langnese ice cream and fresh cakes, baked and delivered fresh to Tante Ju's.

The Gryos with fries

It was time to choose my meals. As mentioned, you order at the counter, and then you get a pager that vibrates when your food is ready for pickup. Since I was there to test the menu, I tried pretty much all the classic dishes to get a good overview. About 10-12 minutes after ordering, I had the "Texas Airliner" burger with fried onion rings (described above), the pork schnitzel with fries, the "Greek Airliner" gyros with fries, and a plate of fish and chips, also known as the "British Airliner," with fries in front of me.

I tried the burger first, partly because, according to the restaurant manager, it's one of their bestsellers, along with the gyros and schnitzel. While the Kässpatzen (cheese spaetzle) looked incredibly appealing (I saw them on a table when I walked in), I followed the culinary recommendations and chose the burger. It was generously topped, held together with a wooden skewer, and looked fantastic at first glance. The taste confirmed my initial impression. The meat was very tender – I deliberately tried a small piece on its own – with no gristle, subtly seasoned, and perfectly combined with the egg, onions, and other ingredients. Even the bun – a crucial factor for a successful burger – was fresh, soft, and not sticky or artificial. Bad bread can ruin even the best toppings, that's clear. Personally, I didn't think the onion rings were necessary, but I tried a few with sour cream and was quite satisfied. I should mention that I knew, of course, that I wasn't in front of the healthiest of kitchens, meaning they used a lot of breading and fat. So, you can't really judge the nutritional value or the health aspect of what's on the plate; the taste, however, is paramount. Nutritional concerns aside, the burger and side dish were already a success. In second place for me was the schnitzel, which is homemade and comes with a specially developed, egg-free breading. It's nice that the golden-yellow breading is very thin, so the natural flavor of the butterfly-cut pork schnitzel isn't lost. After the schnitzel and burger, I moved on to the gyros. At first, I got a tough piece, but I reached for another and ended up with a good, tender piece of meat. Gyros is a bit of a mixed bag, and not everyone likes it. But I do, and for a "non-Greek gyros," it wasn't bad at all. However, I would definitely still prefer the burger at Tante Ju's Speisewerkstatt. Fish and chips, on the other hand, pleasantly surprised me. I spent over a year in London, and I would have preferred to eat nothing at all. I would definitely order it again at Tante Ju's because the fish was very thinly breaded with hardly any grease, very tender and mild in flavor, and – without the chips – it was practically a healthy meal. So, thumbs up again. The portions are also exceptionally generous and filling.

Key facts and conclusion

Tante Ju's Speisewerkstatt is open during the winter months from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday to Friday, and from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Saturdays and Sundays. During the summer months (March to October), it's open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM on weekdays and until 7:00 PM on weekends. Since Tante Ju's Speisewerkstatt is often used as an ideal event location for parties, celebrations, birthdays, children's parties, and other festivities, flexible opening hours are possible and can be discussed individually. This means you can contact the Tante Ju's team if you're looking for a suitable venue for your event with approximately 30 people or more. They can also offer a special menu, such as a large BBQ. However, especially on weekends, you should expect to book 4-6 weeks in advance, as the venue is very popular. Inside, there's seating for 130 guests at approximately 30 tables, while the beer garden area outside can accommodate another 180-200 guests. Parking is available in a large lot next to the visitor park, and you're just a stone's throw from the entrance.
