ViniPuri2.0 – The Wine Bar | I first encountered ViniPuri2.0 at the beginning of the year as part of the "Weinmahleins" event series (Read more here). Following this, a few weeks later I visited the restaurant, which had reopened in October 2017 and included a fine dining area, wine bar and quiet terrace (Learn more about ViniPuri2.0This time, I was drawn to the wonderful restaurant for a glass or two of wine, a look at the wine list, and some great courses from the new head chef, Christoph Mezger.

Over 300 wines are offered.
Wine enjoyment at ViniPuri2.0
„"A good meal deserves a good wine." – In my opinion, this doesn't necessarily have to be absolutely true, but if I do choose wine with my meal, then it has to be good wine. I'm not quite as discerning as a trained sommelier, but I can usually tell what goes well together and tastes good to me. Discovering the harmony between a particular wine and the food served is always a lot of fun for me, especially because wines can completely change their flavor profile depending on the food they're paired with.
At ViniPuri2.0, the approach to wine is this: Anyone who comes to this inviting restaurant to dine and drink isn't categorized as a wine connoisseur or a novice. Instead, you're seen as a guest who will simply be served and made happy, according to your individual needs and desires. If your wine knowledge extends back to the very roots of wine history, sommelier and restaurant owner Carlo Franchi is happy to engage in conversation and exchange ideas at that level. However, if you're simply looking for a good wine to complement your meal, without any real wine expertise, that's no problem either. You'll receive friendly and straightforward assistance with your selection.
At ViniPuri wine bar (and of course in the fine dining area), the goal is simply to bring joy to wine, to drink it, and to open new doors for new tastes. Joy in a glass means something different to everyone. Some don't need a long story to tell about their wine to enjoy it, while others consider information about the winemaker, the winery, the soil structure and the vines, as well as the specific maceration, fermentation, aging, and maturation processes, to be essential to the experience. Everyone eats and drinks differently, and that's precisely where the ViniPuri team comes in. They strive to find the perfect wine for every guest, paired with exactly the feeling one hopes for when choosing to dine out. ViniPuri 2.0 serves only hand-picked wines of exceptional quality. Small wineries, winemakers who often don't produce in large quantities or whose wines are only offered in a few select locations, are featured on the wine list with their exquisite wines. Rare wines are featured on the menu, alongside classics and carefully selected favorites of the hosts. Whether you're looking to ease into the world of wine or deepen your existing knowledge of its flavors, both are presented in a charming and professional manner. So, it's time to take a look at the menu.
The wine selection at the WiniPuri wine bar
The wine list at ViniPuri2.0 offers something to suit every palate. The selection is exceptional and well-balanced, and currently over 350 different wines are available for tasting, along with the opportunity to discover lesser-known and indigenous grape varieties. The wines primarily come from family-run wineries. Characterful, innovative, and expertly curated, the wine list is intentionally organized into easy-to-understand categories: Sparkling Wines, White, Rosé, Red, Sweet, Large Formats, and Rare Wines. This makes it easy for everyone to quickly find what they're looking for.
Sparkling wines, for example as an aperitif before the meal, are available by the glass or by the bottle (0.15l/0.75l) from Germany, France, and Italy. Prices start at just €5.40 per glass for a Soave Classico Brut DOC, going up to €110 for a bottle of "Lucrezia" Riserva Etichetta Nera DOCG – I've enjoyed this wine abroad before and was delighted to discover it here. I personally am a big fan of something sparkling in a glass before the evening begins with the amuse-bouche and other culinary delights. The selection of white wines immediately shows connoisseurs that nothing is left to chance. While the focus is on Germany (Rheinhessen, Mosel, Franken, Kamptal, etc.) and Italy (South Tyrol, Friuli, Piedmont, Umbria, Tuscany, etc.), there are also a few wines from Spain and South Africa. (I've even drunk the Chardonnay "Edgebaston" myself in Stellenbosch/Cape Town, where it's listed for €6.60 or €36.50 on the menu, and I highly recommend it.)
As a big rosé fan, I recognized most of the bottles on offer. A Zweigelt DAC "Rosé" from the Austrian Kamptal region (€5.20/glass | €28.50/bottle), an Italian "Anima Rosa DOC" (€5.60/glass | €36.50/bottle), or a Mallorcan "Twentytwelve" Pink from the organic winery Es Fangar – which I've also tried there (€6.90/glass | €37.90/bottle). ViniPuri's red wine selection includes wines from France, Spain, Italy, Argentina, South Africa, Austria, Greece, and, of course, predominantly Italy. I'll leave the dessert wines (also with a focus on Italy), large-format wines, and rare finds up to your own judgment. Here you can get a detailed look at the... ViniPuri wine list I would recommend – as is usually the case when there is sufficient expertise in wine available locally – that you rely on the local expertise and also allow yourself to experience new tastes, profiles and consequently new experiences in the glass.
Also important: New vintages are regularly added to the wine list (…and will be in the coming days…), along with other fantastic wines from Italy, France, Austria, Spain, Germany, and Greece. It's worth taking a look at the list regularly, whether for an after-work glass or a tasting in the fine dining area.
Wine shop and "Open Sesame"„
The ViniPuri team has come up with something new for discovering new "wine treasures." With "Open Sesame," ViniPuri 2.0 will open any 0.75l bottle of wine from the menu for you when three glasses are ordered per table. Whether you're a group of three, two, or even alone, it doesn't matter. Thanks to the very popular "Open Sesame" offer for bottled wines, the various open wines (red/white wine, sparkling wines, and rosé wines in 0.15l glasses) on the ViniPuri wine list aren't quite as prominent. Nevertheless, the selection of open wines changes every 10-15 days, and you can order by the glass from €4.90 (2016 "Lagrein" Rosé DOC) to €12.90 ("Donna Agathe" Brut Rosé Champagne). Of course, you can take away the wines that you particularly enjoyed directly from the small wine shop in the ViniPuri wine bar (already chilled and ready to drink, or for storage in your own wine cellar).
Culinary arts, cuisine and chef
ViniPuri2.0 places great emphasis on quality, individuality, and "that certain something," not only when it comes to wine. There's also a new face behind the stove, with renowned chef Christoph Mezger (formerly of Tian Munich) at the helm of this trendy newcomer restaurant since the beginning of April. The menu features "aromatic green cuisine" under the banner of "intense taste." Only high-quality products and the finest ingredients are used, sourced—as with the wines—exclusively from select and trusted suppliers. The pillars of the cuisine are acidity, spiciness, and umami—constantly paired and combined in new and innovative ways, often with seemingly forgotten herbs such as Mexican marigold or oxalis.
Unlike the common practice in many restaurants, at ViniPuri2.0 the sommelier works in tandem with the chef. This means that Carlo Franchi skillfully selects the perfect wines to complement the menu created by Christoph Mezger, giving him free rein in its design and expertly pairing the wines within the menu itself. If you dine in the wine bar, you can expect new dishes every seven to ten days. The fine dining area is different. There, the three-course menu, which changes every two weeks, is a reasonable €52 plus €23.50 for the wine pairing. A five-course menu, including wine pairings, is available for just under €114. From veal tartare with morels, kohlrabi, and chives, to langoustine with nori, fennel, and brown butter, to black-feathered chicken with parsley and garlic, the possibilities are endless.
Information about the ViniPuri2.0
During the week, depending on the time and number of guests, you can also try your luck spontaneously. Reservations are always recommended for the fine dining area. Since I've whetted your appetite for the wines, despite the free parking in the underground garage, it's advisable to take a taxi or bring a sober friend. 😉 I'm curious to hear how you experience your little wine journey at ViniPuri2.0 and whether you, too, enjoy being skillfully and professionally guided through the evening, as well as the wine and food menu, in a way that feels a bit like being a friend. Have fun and treat yourself! 🙂
