The „Bavarian Organic Seal“ and „Certified Quality Bavaria“ || Have you ever heard of the Bavarian Organic Seal or „Certified Quality Bavaria“? – Anyone who consciously enjoys ‚regionally produced‘ food and consequently buys and consumes food accordingly should familiarize themselves with these exciting seals.
In this first part, I will introduce you to both the „The "Bavarian Organic Seal" and "Certified Quality Bavaria" are both quality and origin programs of the Free State of Bavaria. What are the advantages of buying products with these labels? What's behind them? And where can you sample them – this year even for the first time at Oktoberfest (Part 2)?.
The most important information about the Bavarian organic seal
What is the "Bavarian Organic Seal"? – The seal represents a regional organic quality promise, high-quality organic products, and traceable origin. When you choose food products bearing the white and blue logo, you can be sure that your selection meets far more than just the legal requirements for organic products.
For a product to receive the "Bavarian Organic Seal," it must meet various criteria. These are based on the standards of the organic farming associations active in Bavaria: "Bioland," "Biokreis," "Demeter," and "Naturland"—all associations that stand for organic farming and demonstrate a strong commitment to nature conservation (preserving biodiversity, protecting our local waters, and reducing CO2 emissions). These criteria include, for example, the avoidance of chemical-synthetic pesticides, the cultivation of diverse crop rotations, cover crops, and green manure. The requirements for the "Bavarian Organic Seal" are stricter than those of the well-known "EU Organic Seal" and ensure healthy and fertile soils, which in turn are essential for biodiversity. (To illustrate this, here's a comparison: Organic fields contain 65 to 90 percent more earthworms than conventional fields. These are important for loosening the soil and building humus.)
Products bearing the "Bavarian Organic Seal" are definitely from Bavaria and are produced, processed, and stored there using Bavarian raw materials. Bread awarded the organic seal is baked from Bavarian grain that was grown and milled in Bavaria. By purchasing this bread or other products with the "Bavarian Organic Seal," you not only support local agriculture and food production but also automatically contribute to shorter transport routes, climate protection, and environmental conservation.
Compliance with these requirements is verified and monitored through a multi-stage, independent, and state-audited control system. With this seal, we have complete assurance that all "Bavarian Organic Seal" products come from organic farming and meet the stated criteria. Therefore, the seal not only serves as an ideal aid when shopping for regional organic products, but you are also automatically doing something good for your own region and, of course, for yourself.
In summary, the Bavarian organic seal stands for numerous positive aspects, the most important of which are "organic farming," "nature and environmental protection," "preservation of biodiversity," "protection of our local waters," "regionality," and "low CO2 emissions." By buying products with the "Bavarian organic seal," you're doing something good all around!
Certified Quality Bavaria („GQ-Bayern“) – what’s behind it?
The state quality and origin assurance program „Tested Quality – Bavaria“ is represented by the State Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Forestry (StMELF).
With its "Certified Quality Bavaria" seal, the state of Bavaria is a pioneer in comprehensive quality assurance for regional food products. The Bavarian seal stipulates additional requirements for product quality as well as production and processing standards. Compliance with these standards is monitored by accredited, private certification bodies under state supervision. The established quality standards, which apply to the products during production and processing, exceed legal requirements. Products bearing the "Certified Quality Bavaria" seal are exclusively produced and processed in Bavaria.
The foundation of the "GQ Bayern" system consists of both self-monitoring by all participating businesses in the form of records of their operational processes, and independent certification bodies that, in turn, verify compliance with the respective quality and testing regulations. A third level of control is the state oversight of the aforementioned certification and testing body, as well as system supervision by the Bavarian State Research Center for Agriculture (LfL). You might be wondering what exactly is checked? – To ensure compliance with quality and origin criteria, everything from production and processing to trade and final sale is monitored through on-site inspections, feed and food analyses, quantity plausibility checks, and document reviews.
For example, when it comes to cattle and beef, the "Certified Quality Bavaria" program involves inspections of feed on inspected farms, inspections of the farm itself, the slaughterhouse, the meat counter, and verification of regional origin. Comprehensive monitoring from start to finish is part of the quality and origin program.
