My favorite among the appetizers: delicious beef tartare

Get to know the Oskar in Schwabing

Restaurant Oskar opened in spring 2020 and is run by the experienced restaurateur Marko Huth – "diners who enjoy good food" will already know him from the Steak restaurant „Zum Goldenen Kalb“, which I introduced to you in 2017 as part of a wine campaign. Instead of steaks, Marko's popular new opening in Schwabing offers high-quality Alpine cuisine, interpreted with a Mediterranean flair and always with a focus on seasonal and regional dishes.

„The connection to the region and the collaboration with regional partners have been very important to my team and me from the very beginning. I want to know where the high-quality products our kitchen team, led by head chef Ivan Poprjaduhha, uses come from and ensure that my guests can taste the quality, freshness, and local flavor,“ says Marko Huth. The standard menu at Schwabinger Oskar, which changes approximately six times a year, is deliberately kept small and is complemented by a weekly changing specials menu – also featuring seasonal delicacies. The menu offers a handful of different dishes, and you can choose from fine appetizers, main courses, and desserts. Crisp, fresh salads are also available.

Don't forget the wine pairing for your meals – the selection and expertise at Oskar are excellent.

Besides its high-quality cuisine, Oskar's appeal lies in its unique flair – a place where you want to eat, enjoy, and linger – as well as the warm hospitality and attentive service. Many regulars, who were greeted personally and warmly, entered Oskar during our visit. For food and drinks, you can choose between the indoor area, which seats 60 to 70 people, or the beer garden (for approximately 120 guests), adorned with impressive chestnut trees decorated with fairy lights. Brick walls, a prominent bar, attractive artwork, and an overall harmonious ambiance create a cozy atmosphere. It's comfortable both inside and out. Due to the weather, we switched between the two locations and thus enjoyed both options Oskar has to offer. Also of interest: Oskar is located in a building very familiar to long-time Munich residents – in the 1970s, it housed the popular pub "Alte Burg," which attracted bands such as the Spider Murphy Gang. Great, right?

Overall, it's a perfectly coherent concept that makes Oskar in Schwabing a restaurant worth visiting, sitting down to, and enjoying delicious food. Since many others feel the same way, you should definitely make a reservation in advance – whether you're using the Fine Dine Box or not. Time to take a closer look at the menu.

Oskar offers Alpine cuisine with a Mediterranean twist.

Eat and enjoy yourself at Oskar in Schwabing

First of all: I particularly appreciate that Oskar offers light and summery cuisine, adapted to the respective season. The lovingly prepared dishes are served in generous portions and attractively presented. Every dish we enjoyed impressed me not only with the ingredients themselves, but also with the added refinement in terms of seasoning and interpretation.

My companion and I started with beef tartare with a quail egg and fresh bread, followed by cold-cooked salmon tartare with avocado and coriander. We both tried both, and once again my love for fine beef tartare was confirmed, which, of course, depends above all on its skillful preparation and the quality of the meat. It was particularly well-seasoned and flavorful, but not overpowering – a perfect start to the beautiful summer evening. The salmon tartare had a real kick in terms of seasoning, which didn't detract from the dish's wonderful freshness at all. I also particularly liked the presentation. With the appetizers, I enjoyed a refreshing cranberry rosemary spritzer – not an easy choice with over 13 different aperitifs to choose from.

For our main courses, we relied on Marco's expertise and looked forward to tagliata of roast beef with arugula, Parmesan, and fresh lemon, as well as pasta. We paired it with a Pinot Gris – one of the many wines available by the glass from the extensive wine list. Don't hesitate to ask for recommendations if you're unsure about the best food and drink pairings for you. Our second main course was fettuccine with mussels and a white wine broth – a dream, tasting like a vacation at a beach restaurant with fresh mussels on your plate. Simply wonderful, and paired with the exceptional wine (Gronda IGT Toscana Bianco 2020, Calafata Winery), it was pure bliss. For direct comparison, we also sampled three different red wines, which Marco had also recommended to complement our chosen main courses. For me, the wine from the Calafata winery, the light-fruited, gently elegant 2018 Majulina IGT Toscana Rosso, was the winner in terms of taste. It's best to simply ask for advice on which foods and wines pair well; that's what I like to do, at least.

Dessert is absolutely essential! – The cheesecake and the pistachio tiramisu are worth every extra kilo.

Back to the menu: At Oskar's, you'll always find at least one fish dish – currently char meunière with potato, spinach, almond, and lemon-caper butter – a pasta creation – at the moment, my chosen fettuccine – a meat dish, and a fine risotto. The classic Wiener Schnitzel is, of course, also on the menu, as are veal patties and freshly prepared bouillabaisse.

For dessert, we had a lime cheesecake with ginger and an absolutely divine pistachio tiramisu, which I completely forgot to share. No matter how hard you're working on your beach body, you absolutely must treat yourself to these delicacies! To top it all off, Marko brought us a delicious espresso and various types of grappa from South Tyrol, which we were allowed to sample – definitely try the chamomile grappa, it's amazing! (You can find the entire menu on the Website of Restaurant Oskar in Schwabing.)
