UPPER EAT SIDE – Giesing – international

A while ago, my companion and I ate at Upper Eat Side. We had to make a reservation several weeks in advance, as there were unfortunately no tables available earlier. This already indicates the restaurant's popularity – quite justified, as I can now confirm after our visit. The restaurant isn't exactly in a prime location. Werinherstraße is in Giesing, not far from the Silberhornstraße train station. Even from the outside, the relatively small restaurant appears rather unassuming and, with approximately 12-14 tables, is quite intimate and could be described as "cozy.".

Immediately upon entering, a friendly young man asked for our names. He informed me that we were about 20 minutes early, yet we were still able to take a seat without waiting at a cozy table for two, complete with a decorative rose head in a glass and comfortable leather banquettes in a subtle rust brown. The restaurant exudes a cozy atmosphere, has a rather elongated layout, and overall a very inviting ambiance. Two large white archways—one over the bar and the other providing access to the kitchen, cloakroom, and restrooms—along with a long, welcoming wooden bar, large old barrels used as seating with high stools, and many other small details contribute to the cozy atmosphere. Two of the tables are even located in a somewhat secluded area, offering a more private setting. Almost all the tables were occupied the entire time we left. Spontaneous visits to Upper Eat Side are therefore unfortunately not possible.

Not long after we sat down, another young man came to us and explained how the concept at Upper Eat Side worked. A board on the wall listed six different appetizers, each costing six euros. Below them were several main courses from which you could choose your preferred dish. The friendly man suggested that at least three of the appetizers would be necessary to feel full. Although the menu changes regularly, here are the appetizers available to us, so you have a general idea. To begin with: We opted for one appetizer to share and then each chose a main course. Only now did I realize that my "main course," priced at six euros, was actually listed as an appetizer – very kind of him, as I've often paid more than twice that for similar-sized salads. I chose the goat cheese from the menu. The waiter at our table was exceptionally friendly and recited the entire menu to us, also recommending a suitable white wine (yellow Muscat), and we drank three glasses of it in total. We also opted for two large bottles of still Adelholzener water.

For starters, we had salmon trout tartare with crostini, braised beef with turnip and horseradish, and "first wild garlic" risotto – these were our choices! Delicious! We also ordered marinated fillet with pesto and herbs, Isar Valley salmon trout with peas, or Starnberg Lake smoked whitefish with beluga lentils – as mentioned, each for €6, which was a reasonable price for the portion of risotto. Had we ordered all six starters for a total of €36, we definitely would have been full and could have tried numerous different dishes. 🙂 However, we also opted for the Isar Valley char – available for two or more people at €17 each – which is a whole fish with vegetables in a separate large pan and a salad in a small bowl for €34. Not cheap, but definitely worth the price after the first bite. We were also shown the best way to fillet the fish so that we wouldn't get any bones in our mouths and could enjoy the whole fish without any hassle. So if you don't have much experience with this – no problem, they'll help you. My main course – the goat cheese – was very creamy and, combined with the dressing and a few sips of white wine, absolutely delicious.

Upper Eat Side has no real connection to New York – neither in its interior design nor in its menu. According to the waiters, the restaurant's name was chosen as a joke. It opened about three years ago and is clearly very popular. Card payments are accepted. If you're looking for a pleasant evening, Upper Eat Side in Giesing is definitely the place to be. Whether you're a couple, a group of friends, or even a business associate – it's a great choice. The restaurant is open Tuesday through Saturday from 6 pm to midnight. Reservations are recommended, and you might have to wait a bit. Set menus are also available, starting at €65 per person.

Overall, we had absolutely nothing to complain about that entire evening. Even the appetizer, the homemade focaccia with herb butter – served on a sturdy wooden board – was delicious. We paid €84 including tip for three glasses of wine, two large bottles of water, essentially two appetizers and a huge main course, plus a dessert (divine! A must-try! Chocolate cake, white chocolate mousse, passion fruit beer 🙂 and lots of little extras on a dark slate platter). It wasn't a cheap evening, but everything tasted amazing, was served very quickly (for example, my second glass of wine, the dessert, and the second bottle of water), and was simply delicious. On top of that, the staff was exceptionally friendly, competent, and attentive. I would definitely come back. 🙂

I'll be back: Absolutely! It's not exactly cheap, but worth the money. Almost impossible without a reservation.
