As I recently mentioned on my blog, I spontaneously went to b3 Burger Bar for dinner last night with a companion. We hadn't made a reservation, it wasn't planned, and we certainly didn't regret it. Rather spontaneously, and because we weren't quite sure what we wanted, we were cold and very hungry, so we opted for the burger joint not far from Sendlinger Tor – on Schmidstraße.
When we entered, we were the only people in the entire restaurant besides the staff behind the bar. The exclusive kitchen probably measures around 50-55 m2 and is equipped with completely different, rather large tables with space for up to about 12 people per table and about 8-10 tables, bar stools and a seating area with high stools in the back.
When we entered the restaurant (or rather, judging by its ambiance and character, more of a bar), after a brief discussion about where we wanted to sit, the friendly waiter immediately offered us a spot in the corner at one of the aforementioned large tables. We took our seats; I sat on a wide windowsill with small brown cushions by the huge glass front, which faces the street—a quieter side street off Sendlingerstrasse—and makes the restaurant feel so welcoming and bright.
The menus were already at each table in the form of laminated cards – the front featuring the burger and drink offerings, the back with the extensive cocktail and long drink selection – and while the burger selection wasn't huge, it was a good mix. There was only one burger for vegetarians, which I naturally ordered. The burger is called Yoko Ono and costs 9 euros. It can be ordered with either fries or a side salad. I opted for the side salad. Both the burger itself and the salad were delicious – the zucchini and chickpea patty tasted excellent in combination with the tomatoes, peppers, and onions, as well as the choice of cheese. It was fresh and substantial, satisfying but not too filling. I have to admit that my first impression when the plate was placed in front of me wasn't positive – but after the first bite, I was very satisfied.
The two burgers we ordered were served simultaneously after about a 15-minute wait, which was perfectly acceptable. My companion chose the "b3 Burger," usually priced at €11.50, but yesterday it was only €9.50 (the friendly waiter pointed this out to us), as it happened to be the burger of the day. This same burger is also available on the regular menu for €9.50 with a different sauce (the "Sam Cook" burger, seasoned with salt and pepper). The burger is traditionally topped with beef, tomatoes, onions, and lettuce, with a choice of cheese. It can also be ordered with double beef (for an additional €3). My companion thought the burger was excellent—very fresh and quite substantial. In total, there are eight different burgers on offer (ranging from €9 to €14.50), including the two we ordered. You can also order fries, cheese fries, or chili cheese fries (€3.50–€4.50) to go with it. There are also three salads (5.50–11.50 euros) and two different desserts. After my main course, I chose the homemade chocolate cake with a soft center and two kinds of sorbet for 6.90 euros – very delicious (baked bananas and pineapple were also available for dessert). It took a little longer to arrive, but it was worth the wait and the price. (Definitely try it!)
Since we were, as mentioned, the only guests, the waiter – one of the three owners of the bar, all of whom have long worked in the restaurant industry – found a little time to chat with us. He told us that b3 Burger Bar had been open for about four months and that it was often nearly impossible to get a table without a reservation on weekday evenings, at lunchtime, and on weekends. We had also walked past it several times, and all the tables were indeed occupied. Overall, the atmosphere in b3 Burger Bar is very pleasant, cozy, and furnished with attention to detail: orange light above the bar from cleverly suspended neon tubes, various light sources created by playful designs on the walls, elaborate wall decorations and wallpaper, a winding black and white floor, a comfortable bar with bar stools, a wooden beamed ceiling, dining tables made to look "old," etc. An interesting mix of Asian and American design, which is also reflected in the food – American burgers seasoned with Asian sauces. Just take a look at the pictures I took and you'll see for yourself why it's so easy to sit down, enjoy your burger, and feel comfortable. As mentioned, the staff, or in this case the owner, is exceptionally friendly, very genuine, and attentive. After we ordered dessert, we were offered a complimentary espresso, which my companion gratefully accepted and thoroughly enjoyed. Never pushy, yet always immediately at our table to take our orders – that's how it should be.
The daily burger changes every day from Monday to Saturday and can be ordered for the aforementioned €9.50. There's also a burger of the month. From Monday to Thursday, one cocktail is available each day for €5.50 (Monday: Vodka, Tuesday: Rum, Wednesday: Caipirinha, and Thursday: Mojito). Lunch menus including a soft drink (0.2l) are available for €8.50 from Monday to Friday between 12 pm and 3 pm.
The b3 Bar is best reached via Sendlinger Tor. Parking isn't the easiest, but you can find a spot after a bit of searching. Based on what the owner said, I would definitely recommend making a reservation, even though, as mentioned, we were the only guests last night. 😉 Card payments are accepted. We paid €38 for two drinks, two burgers, and a dessert – not exactly cheap, but overall reasonable and fair. We'd gladly come back. It's certainly a nice place to spend an evening with friends if you're looking for something simple – but undoubtedly delicious – at relatively reasonable prices. Give it a try; you'll have a great time.
I'll be back: Definitely a place for delicious burgers. There's only one vegetarian option, but it's still a good choice for a nice atmosphere.
