Dallmayr Bar & Grill – It's almost impossible to have missed the new restaurant that opened in mid-September 2017 if you're interested in good food and new hotspots in the city. I'm talking about the Dallmayr Grill & Bar, which opened a few weeks ago in the flagship store of the Dallmayr delicatessen. The focus, besides relaxed gatherings and enjoyment, is on fish and seafood, wine, and champagne. Dallmayr stands for high-quality cuisine and a sophisticated atmosphere. However, I've experienced firsthand that this can also be combined with a relaxed and somewhat more casual setting during my two visits – once for lunch and once for a leisurely dinner. I'd like to tell you about it.

What can you expect at the Dallmayr Bar & Grill?

The new Dallmayr Bar & Grill attracts a diverse crowd. From young to old, hip and chic to business and more casual, everyone feels instantly at ease and in the right place. It's a welcome contrast to the gourmet hotspot, café-bistro, and Michelin-starred restaurant on the first floor of the Dallmayr.

But it's not just the setting that's great; the food is also fantastic. With the opening of the Dallmayr Bar & Grill, you can enjoy delicious food all day long. In the morning – starting at 8:00 am – the day begins with a selection of quick breakfast options and, of course, a variety of Dallmayr coffee specialties – also available to go in a reusable Recup cup. Alongside this, you'll find healthy bowls from Pure Delight, a selection of sandwiches and croissants, smoothies, and superfood breakfasts. At lunchtime and in the evening, you can dine à la carte and expect a variety of appetizers and starters served sharing-style, canapés, grilled seafood, changing "catch of the day" specials, various toppings ("add-ons"), sauces, chutneys, desserts, and more. Great emphasis is placed on quality and "that certain something," and for example, a robata grill was specially made for Dallmayr, on which Japanese delicacies, lobster, scallops, cod, and other dishes are prepared to order.

The first thing you'll notice – even before looking at the menu – is the integrated bar counter, which impresses with its chic fish-scale design, warm lighting, and inviting atmosphere. Among other things, they serve the finest champagne and delicious oysters, presented in a creative style (…let yourself be surprised…). The former champagne and oyster bar ("Lukullus Bar"), which was integrated before the renovation, is clearly the precursor to the new Dallmayr Bar & Grill and is, of course, an integral part of the new concept. From 11:30 a.m. onwards, the lunch and dinner menus are available on the simple bistro tables, which perfectly complement the bar's overall ambiance. The cuisine is contemporary, meaning you can expect both modern and international dishes.

Food offer and selection
In addition to a choice of classic set menus and satisfying à la carte dishes, a variety of lighter options are also available. With a fantastic selection ranging from vegetable tempura and chickpea fries to beef tartare, scallops, and sea bass sashimi, there's sure to be something for everyone. Whether you're just popping in for a few bites, enjoying a leisurely dinner, or indulging in a delicious lunch, you're welcome here. The new Dallmayr Bar & Grill is also the perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine or champagne at lunchtime or in the evening. It's designed to be a meeting place for anyone who wants to enjoy good food and drinks, whether in a small group or a larger gathering.

The dishes mentioned are influenced by the world's exciting metropolises, ultimately resulting in intensely flavorful, creative, and artfully arranged combinations. So don't worry about anything too fussy or overly elaborate on the plate – that's intentionally not the case. The choice is between modern interpretations of Dallmayr classics (such as bouillabaisse or the smoked salmon variation) and new culinary experiences. Time for a look at the menu.

Review of the food and service

At lunchtime, my dining companion and I enjoyed homemade lemonade (four different flavors) and a deliberately "colorful assortment" of various starters (1. "Lobster Thermidor Tarte Flambée" with spinach, cheese, mustard seeds, and cognac (€17); 2. "Chickpea Fries" with avocado, pomegranate, salad, and argan oil (€14.50); 3. "Vegetable Tempura" with zucchini blossom, sweet potato, asparagus, shiso leaf, and carrot (€12.50); and 4. Potato Foam ("Add-on" for €4)). Everything was good, but the Tarte Flambée and the Potato Foam were definitely unforgettable. Afterwards, we chose to share a main course: the "Catch of the Day" (on this day: sea bass fillet) with a side dish (your choice; here: green asparagus, €6) and pineapple mango chutney (your choice; €4.50). We finished with a small chocolate cake with roasted watermelon, lime sorbet, and pine nuts (€9.50). A great combination and ideal for a light and satisfying end to the meal – especially at lunchtime, when the day is usually still going strong. My highlight of the lunch, besides the aforementioned starters, was the exceptionally delicious and tender sea bass fillet with the fruity and fresh chutney (a total of five different sauces and chutneys). For lunch, I would definitely recommend trying the starters as well and perhaps sharing a piece or two. For the main course, I wholeheartedly recommend the fish. It would definitely be a mistake to leave the Dallmayr Bar & Grill without having eaten fish. And what always follows a good lunch? Exactly! – An equally delicious dinner. A few days later, it was my turn.

Dallmayr Champagne

In the evenings, as mentioned, the atmosphere is different. Warmer lighting, additional candles on the tables, and quite lively music in the background (every Friday and Saturday evening there's also a live DJ in the bar). Immediately after taking our seats at a window table, we were given the menu and offered a complimentary glass of champagne ("Dallmayr Premier Cru Brut | 0.1l for €12.50"). Those familiar with Dallmayr will know that the selection of wines and champagnes here is, of course, considerable and extremely well-curated.Drinks menuSo be sure to ask for recommendations here as well. Even the homemade bread with homemade lemon-herb butter whetted my appetite for more, and I was looking forward to the appetizers. We opted for the fresh "Salmon in Five Variations" (salty, sour, sweet, spicy, bitter; for €22.50) and a "Bouillabaisse Bar & Grill" with scallops, prawns, and Atlantic fish (for €19.50). I have rarely enjoyed such a delicious fish soup, although I find it hard to resist a bouillabaisse on the menu. For our main courses, we chose the US flank steak (250 grams for €29.50) and, for the variety, the "Catch of the Day" again, in this case a delicious whole Dover sole. Even in the evening, you can freely choose your side dishes, and we again opted for the green asparagus with a perfectly balanced miso pepper jus (€4.50) with our steak, and the baby spinach salad with shampoo and quinoa (€5) with our fish. I also couldn't resist the sweet potatoes with spicy honey (€4.50), even though they didn't go particularly well with the fish.

The US flank steak

My fish was once again the highlight of the evening, but Dallmayr Bar & Grill also demonstrated its talent with meat. The cooking was perfect, the selection was appealing, and the customizable combination of main course, side dish, and appetizer skillfully rounded off the evening's culinary experience. The separately ordered sweet potato was indeed a surprise in terms of flavor, as the sweet and spicy honey was dominant and somewhat masked the very specific sweet potato taste. For me, the winners of the evening were the bouillabaisse (a must-try!), the succulent steak, and the fresh fish. My companion's asparagus was initially forgotten, but it tasted delicious on its own, especially with the final bites of meat and fish. The salmon variation was—by Dallmayr standards—exactly as one would expect: fresh, of the highest quality, and attractively presented. What I found fascinating was how differently the same product can taste depending on the preparation method, something this appetizer particularly highlighted. I was also delighted by the dessert we ordered last ("Sweet Special – Bar & Grill," €12 per person), which was highly recommended. The presentation alone was stunning, skillfully combining cherry and mango sorbet with almond cake, apricot tart, and chocolate tartlets. It's ideal for two people – but you definitely need to have a sweet tooth to enjoy it.

A successful conclusion

Ambiance and atmosphere

As is often the case, this location exudes a different atmosphere at lunchtime and during the day than it does in the evening. During the day, you can pleasantly experience the vibrant, fast-paced, and colorful Munich life. In the evening, the Dallmayr Bar & Grill transforms into a cozy retreat for Munich locals, food lovers, and those seeking an after-work drink in a chic bar setting. Indeed, the focal point is the centrally located bar – modern and skillfully integrated into the familiar, classic Dallmayr atmosphere of the original restaurant – with its fish-scale design. Old and new are expertly combined, and feeling comfortable is easily achieved – whether at the tables for two, four, or groups, or at the bar – in the completely redesigned 130 m² space.

Hard facts and personal opinion

The Dallmayr Bar & Grill is the ideal place to enjoy yourself, relax, and eat well, while definitely experiencing top quality on your plate and in your glass. My opinion: If you enjoy good food and want to try new things, you absolutely must stop by. I highly recommend making a reservation for lunch, and a quick call ahead is also a good idea for the evening. For example, you can also reserve seats at the bar. I felt very comfortable there and will definitely be back.
