EDELWEIS: Breakfast, Lunch, Cocktails & More

Edelweiß

Edelweiss is a lovely and cozy restaurant located on Alpenplatz – a typical residential area not far from Silberhornstraße – in Giesing. If you've avoided this corner of the district until now, either because Giesing doesn't really appeal to you or because you were convinced the local restaurants were lacking: think again! Stop by Edelweiss and you'll instantly become a Giesing enthusiast. 🙂 I recently went there with a friend for breakfast, as Edelweiss had been recommended to me by one of my readers, and before I knew it, I was there too. 🙂

The Edelweiss restaurant looks quite friendly and inviting from the outside. Along the yellow facade, adorned with a white "das edelweiß" sign, numerous simple wooden tables and chairs are set up under parasols. Even before entering, a sign informs you that breakfast is served until 4:00 PM on weekends – perfect for late risers – and also provides information about events like the next music get-together.

To enter, you have to climb a small step, passing a white-painted artificial tree that artfully adorns the damaged section of the facade. In the article photos, you can see an exterior view of the restaurant and admire this ingenious solution. Once inside, we were pleasantly surprised. The restaurant is narrow and elongated. A dark bar dominates the bright, welcoming dining room with approximately 15-18 tables of varying sizes. A piano stands against the wall to one side, and a large, colorful picture hangs on the wall. A large mirror, real flowers on the tables, comfortable banquettes, and soaring ceilings with genuine stucco, along with parquet floors, create a cozy atmosphere.

We had made a reservation by phone beforehand, which wasn't necessary for our visit on a Sunday around 1 p.m. The friendly server approached us immediately, and we were then able to choose one of the available tables. We opted for a small table for two, with me having a view of the bar. In my opinion, it's a very cozy restaurant where you could easily linger longer than you're eating. The waitress brought us the extensive menu to choose from as soon as we were seated. My companion briefly considered whether one of the numerous main courses might be a better choice, but then also decided on breakfast from the Edelweiss menu.

Besides freshly squeezed juices like apple-carrot-ginger juice or kiwi-banana-orange smoothie (each for €3.50), there are numerous different breakfasts. After some deliberation, I opted for "Heidi's Breakfast," which included an omelet with cheese, tomatoes, and mushrooms, and a small bowl of Greek yogurt with honey and walnuts (€8.50). It also came with a bread basket, a small dish of butter, and cherry jam. Suffering from a bout of sheer megalomania, I also ordered a fresh Bircher muesli with fresh fruit (€4.50). When my breakfast arrived, I immediately saw that it was far too much. The Bircher muesli was excellent, but even without the extra breakfast, it was incredibly rich. Unusually for Bircher muesli, but perfectly fine with me, it was extremely dense and heavy. Not light and airy or creamy like some Bircher mueslis (e.g., at Backspielhaus). But I thought it tasted excellent. My omelet was fine. Not an amazing taste sensation, but definitely delicious. I had the brilliant idea of mixing the Greek yogurt with the nuts and honey with the fresh fruit from the Bircher muesli – a dream, I tell you! Overall, I would order both again in a heartbeat, just maybe not at the same time. 😉 In the end, I managed to eat almost all of it because I really hate wasting food, but I was still stuffed with breakfast from head to toe afterward. 🙂

My companion opted for pumpkin soup (€2.50) and the "combo breakfast." The waitress even asked specifically if the soup was to be the starter and breakfast the main course, which my companion confirmed. She then served the soup while I was already eating my breakfast. After clearing away the empty bowl of the very creamy and flavorful pumpkin soup, she asked if we wanted the second course 😉 (breakfast). In my opinion, she was a very friendly waitress who was very attentive to our needs – so it wasn't a big deal that we had to wait a little longer for breakfast and soup, even though the Edelweiss wasn't very busy. When serving the soup, the waitress forgot to bring a spoon, and we had to get one ourselves, but since we were in relaxed Sunday mode, it wasn't a cause for complaint. These things happen.

My companion's breakfast (a combination breakfast for €8.50) was a bit easier to manage. It included fresh scrambled eggs with ham (or bacon) and a small bowl of Bircher muesli, jam, and bread. Since I was already completely full, I couldn't try the bread, jam, and butter, but my companion helped herself and was delighted with the soft bread and the delicious red jam. The scrambled eggs with ham were also tasty, plentiful, not too runny, and served hot.

Overall, I can definitely recommend a visit to Edelweiss. I'll certainly be back to try the main courses. There's a wide variety of dishes to choose from. The entire menu also impresses with fair prices and interesting food combinations that go beyond the usual boring fare. Some specials are listed on the menu clipped to a board, which consists of individual A4 sheets. For example, on Mondays you can enjoy an Edelweiss Burger for €7.90, on Wednesday evenings there's Hugo and Aperol Spritz as well as Cosmopolitans for the ladies, on Sundays they watch Tatort (a popular German crime drama) together with an "Edelweiss Cheese Plate" and wine for €8, and there's always something going on at Edelweiss. Oh yes... they also offer various crepes (2 pieces – starting at €4 depending on the type) at Edelweiss.

We paid €32 including tip for two breakfasts, a soup, an extra bowl of muesli, and two drinks (cappuccino and chai tea latte). Quite reasonable. They're open Monday to Friday from 4 pm to midnight, and on weekends and holidays from 10 am to midnight, with hot food served until 11 pm. For the busy folks among you, the entire menu is also available for takeaway, including a 10% discount. Payment is accepted in cash and by debit card, but not by credit card. So, as I said: even if Giesing hasn't been your usual haunt, in my opinion, the cozy Edelweiss is definitely worth the trip. It's a comfortable place to sit with friends in a relaxed atmosphere, but it's also perfect for families with children, couples on a date, or colleagues. Head on over to the Edelweiss!.

I'll be back: Definitely recommended. So far I've only tried the breakfast, but I'll definitely try the main courses.
