The new (digital) concept "Migratory Bird" from DB Station&Service AG proves this point once again. Since September of this year, you can choose healthy, regional food from vending machines located at train stations and reserve it online in advance. The focus is on offering healthy food to go for travelers, locals, and residents – simple, convenient, and fresh. Intrigued by the new campaign, I tried out and tested the new "Migratory Bird" service. The Zugvogel concept from DB Station&Service AG demonstrates how innovative and progressive the topic of "healthy food" can be today, combined with local producers and a sustainable lifestyle. Directly at the train station – currently at the "Holzkirchen" and "Freising" stations – you can get healthy bowls, wraps, muesli, bars, shots, and drinks from the vending machine in just a few steps and even reserve them online in advance.
The new campaign makes it easy to eat healthily on the go and reserve your food from the vending machine. Whether you're just traveling from A to B or want to take healthy meals with you for a whole day of travel – the stocked Zugvogel vending machines offer a wide variety of healthy and diverse food options.

This is how the migratory bird vending machine works: From ordering to enjoying
Can't quite picture what it's like on-site? – No problem, I'll explain how you can choose your food, reserve it online in advance, and pick it up. First, you need to decide whether you want to spontaneously pick your snacks from the "Zugvogel" vending machine on-site, or whether you'd prefer to choose and reserve your food online beforehand. I recommend the latter, as this ensures that your desired dishes are available and reserved for you.
The reservation process works as follows: you register on the Website of "Zugvogel"„ First, select your preferred train station (Holzkirchen or Freising) and then view the menu and available food options online. Once you've made your choice, add your selected items to your shopping cart (or "online nest") and reserve your snacks after entering your details and making your payment. You don't have to worry about someone else taking your food for up to six hours after your reservation.
After that, I can retrieve my selected items from the vending machine slot ("nest").
Once you arrive at the station, all you have to do is scan the QR code you received with your digital order and payment confirmation via email at the vending machine. The Zugvogel vending machines have a special device where you hold your smartphone screen. Immediately after the code is digitally scanned, the dispensing process for your food begins. Your items arrive one after the other at a relaxed pace and without being jostled in the dispensing compartment ("nest"). Only after you have taken one item will the next one be dispensed. Since you already paid in advance when you made your online reservation, you can simply leave after taking your items and you're done. If you're picking up your snacks spontaneously, you can pay in cash or by card.
Those who haven't ordered online in advance can simply choose from the vending machine's selection – no problem!
Migratory bird – my personal test
Currently, the vending machines are stocked with food from "BiteDelite." "Zugvogel" provides you exclusively with delicious dishes made from healthy ingredients, packaged in sustainable containers. All snacks currently and in the future available in the "Zugvogel" vending machines are always freshly prepared, using regional and seasonal ingredients whenever possible. Flavor enhancers, preservatives, and other additives are completely avoided in the entire vending machine assortment. As the "Zugvogel" campaign is still in its early stages, the current selection is limited to a smaller range of items such as muesli in jars, quark dishes, sandwiches with various toppings, different bowls, and wraps. However, the selection and concept partners will change and expand regularly.
To make my selection, I browsed the Zugvogel website, chose my preferred station (Holzkirchen), and clicked through the available snack menu. Together with my companion, I opted for five different items: a bowl, a whole-wheat wrap, a cup of Bircher muesli, a peanut bar, and a lemongrass-apple mint tea. When you make your selection online, you'll see all the products that are generally available in the vending machine; currently unavailable or sold-out products cannot be added to your cart for reservation.
Now pack everything away and let's continue our tour with healthy food to go.
Before you can pay, a user account will be created for you in just a few steps. All you have to do is enter your name, address, and email address (for the order confirmation and QR code). Once you've paid, the six-hour waiting period begins, and you'll be notified of the exact time. When I arrived, all I had to do was scan the code and take my products one by one.
For me personally, the "Zugvogel" service offers many advantages. You can select and reserve food online at your leisure, without any time pressure, and nothing you were looking forward to while browsing will be snatched up. The technology is also extremely innovative and saves a lot of time on-site. If you want a spontaneous snack, the machine's design provides a clear view of the current selection, allowing you to choose something from the machine. Thanks to the "Zugvogel" campaign, it's now even easier to eat healthy food spontaneously – even on the go!
