FAMI – Munich's best pizza here | Pizza, pasta, superfood salads FAMI is a great restaurant, which I would have missed without my visit to [location omitted]. ELLA at Königsplatz I probably would never have discovered it otherwise. Both restaurants are run by the same owners, and that's how I luckily learned about FAMI. Both offer Italian cuisine, but with very different interpretations. FAMI serves delicious pasta, fresh (superfood) salads, a signature burger, daily specials, and what I consider to be the best pizza in town. I had the chance to sample my way through FAMI's menu and, despite the tropical temperatures, couldn't resist their delicious pizza.

What can you expect at FAMI?

„With its slogan "We are Family," "FAMI" stands not only for family ("La Familia") but also for "fame" (Italian for "hunger"). The initials of the owners, Florian August and Michael Hausberger (formerly of Acquarello, Geisels Vinothek, Königshof, etc.), are also incorporated into the restaurant's name. Even on approach, the inviting and regularly packed terrace, complete with a huge orange FAMI logo on the facade, is clearly visible. Located near Munich's Olympic Park, the restaurant's interior, in addition to a prominent bar, is divided into two areas: "Rosso" (the "red area" for 20-25 people, ideal for private parties) and "Blu" (the "blue," front area for approximately 50 people) overlooking the terrace with seating for around 100 people.

As its name suggests, FAMI, which opened in September 2016, is a restaurant for the whole family, especially parents with children. It's all the more wonderful that FAMI, with its simple and understated style, offers some of the best pizzas in the city, giving families the chance to enjoy them at affordable prices. The exceptional taste is undoubtedly due to the Italian pizza chefs and the conscious focus on freshness and quality in the selection of ingredients. These come from Italy, Italian delicatessens, and the local region. The dough for FAMI pizzas is truly special—particularly airy and light—and is prepared daily to ensure that the individual ingredients harmonize perfectly, resulting in the ideal pizza dough. Even if you're already determined to order pizza, I highly recommend browsing the entire menu. It features not only a wide variety of pizzas (from €7.50), but also various pasta dishes (from €9.80), different salads (from €12.50), a diverse selection of antipasti (from €5.80), and a few special dishes, such as "Filetto di Branzino" (sea bass fillet), "Pink Lamb Rump," "Veal Rack," or the "Fami's Italian Burger" with Simmental prime beef, bacon, hay-milk cheese, balsamic onions, and fries (for €13.80). And of course, only the finest ingredients are used in all of these dishes. Between 11:30 am and 2:30 pm, there is an additional "daily special" which sometimes offers something a little different, such as meat patties with potato salad, oven-baked eggplant, and the like. The business lunch (each week a specific salad, pizza, or high-quality pasta) is priced fairly between €7.20 and €7.80.

The standout feature, however – and this was confirmed by my own experience – is undoubtedly the pizza, despite the restaurant's overall impressive offerings. The menu boasts ten different classic pizzas (Margherita, Salame, Tonno, Napoletana, Capricciosa, Quattro Formaggi, Buffala, Bruschetta, Vesuvio, San Daniele) and four different "specialty pizzas." These include creations like the bestseller, the "San Gennaro" pizza (with salsiccia, buffalo mozzarella, balsamic onions, and steak pepper | €13.50), and the "Verdura" pizza with wild mushrooms, turnip greens (wild broccoli), cherry tomatoes, and garlic oil (€10.30).

Especially on hot days, the salads ("Fami's Superfood Salad" with avocado, beetroot, pomegranate seeds, quinoa, and grilled goat cheese for €12.80, or the "Raw Food Salad" with purple coleslaw, heirloom carrots, beetroot, broccolini, and creamy burrata for €12.50) are just what I need. My personal test

Besides the two aforementioned, very fruity Spritz varieties, I started with homemade, airy focaccia. Since it was quite hot during my visit, I initially opted for the superfood salad, which I devoured completely. The attractively presented salad is generously portioned, quite filling thanks to the quinoa, yet not too heavy. It's not intended as a starter and is definitely filling – for that, there's a small side salad. Because the conversation at the table kept turning to the fantastic pizzas, I couldn't resist and tried a slice each of two additional pizzas that were served. One was the "Buffala" pizza with cherry tomatoes, creamy buffalo mozzarella, and basil (for €12.50 | see cover photo), and the other was the bestseller "San Gennaro" (as pictured). And as I mentioned: I've rarely eaten such a good and perfectly balanced pizza. The dough is beautifully thin, crispy but not too crispy, generously topped, with a soft, not overcooked edge and an overall very light and pleasant bite. Absolutely delicious! Often, pizza leaves you feeling stuffed and wanting to sleep, but with FAMI, even in 30-degree heat, I didn't feel unwell at all – and that's despite having the salad beforehand. The pizzas completely won me over, and the salad is a great alternative if someone at the table prefers greens.

My companion ordered the FAMI's Italian Burger – partly for the variety of options for my photos – which I've since tried myself on another occasion and also found to be very good. I don't like it when a burger is so greasy and everything dribbles out when you bite into it – thankfully, that wasn't the case here. The meat was nice and juicy, and its flavor was clearly noticeable. (In terms of taste, the meat MUST dominate a burger. If the cheese, lettuce, fried onions, etc., are so overpowering that the meat flavor is lost, or you end up with just bread in your mouth, then unfortunately, the burger loses points.) You can tell that there's a lot of expertise in the kitchen and at the pizza oven at FAMI. Everything is cleverly planned and both attractively and deliciously composed and presented. Everything is cooked from scratch, no convenience products are used, and quality is paramount.

Hard facts and personal opinion

In my opinion, a visit to FAMI is definitely worthwhile. Everyone knows the Olympic Park, whether for a concert or just a relaxing stroll. Take advantage of the opportunity to eat at FAMI. I would be very surprised if you didn't find the pizzas exceptionally delicious and be impressed by the atmosphere, the friendly service, and the overall menu. On top of that, FAMI is a fantastic family restaurant. If you want to sit outside, I highly recommend making a reservation. FAMI can also be rented in sections for events.
