Those who read my posts regularly know that I recently mentioned an event in the beautiful hop garden – now the next highlight is calling, and wonderful wines from the lovely Franconian region can be tasted right in the middle of a Bavarian beer garden. Wines that are otherwise not available for purchase or purchase in Munich. I've taken a closer look at both the upcoming Franconian Wine Days and the winery and its wines.

Nestled between sunny vineyards and the idyllic banks of Nordheim – about 270 km from Munich – the family-run Roman Sauer winery was established in the early 1970s. It remains in the family to this day. In their winemaking, the Sauer family continues a winemaking tradition dating back to the 18th century. Five years ago, the business was passed down to the son. The motto, or rather the conviction passed down from generation to generation, has always been to oversee the entire winemaking process. In detail, this means that everything from winter pruning, gentle soil cultivation, and sowing grasses between the vines, to yield reduction, grape processing, filtration, and bottling is personally handled by the family. This comprehensive approach further reinforces the distinctive character of Roman Sauer wines – the very wines you can taste at the Munich Franconian Wine Days. For example, the Sauer family focuses on leaving one to two grams more residual sugar than usual in the wine they produce in order to ultimately create a harmonious symbiosis between the crucial aroma, sweetness and acidity.

To get to know the Roman Sauer winery a little better, the very first thing I did was take a look at their wine selection. All wines offered The wines are produced on the estate's own vineyards in Nordheim and Dettelbach, specifically in the Nordheimer Vögelein, Nordheimer Kreuzberg, Dettelbacher Honigberg, and Dettelbacher Berg-Rondell sites, on limestone soils. This results in particularly full-bodied wines, a fact that is clearly noticeable when tasting them. The Sauer family also places great emphasis on varietal purity and corresponding digestibility. They prioritize sustainable cultivation and gentle harvesting of the vines and vineyards. The result is a range of fruity white wines, sparkling Seccos, crisp rosés, full-bodied and exquisite red wines, as well as numerous other winery products. And that brings us back to the upcoming Franconian Wine Days: You can sample some of these wines during the event in the hop garden. Of course, all your questions about wine, viticulture, "Which wine suits me/which dish?", etc., will be answered on site.

Oh yes… If you happen to be in Nordheim, Franconia: the winery also offers tastings, wine hikes, and cellar tours, each paired with a wealth of expert knowledge. But now, let's talk about the Franconian Wine Days.

Franconian Wine Days in the Hop Garden – what's on offer?

The Hopfengarten is located in Munich's Westpark, near the Audi Dome and the Rudi-Seldmayer-Halle, and is one of seven beer gardens belonging to Haberl Gastronomie in Munich. Thanks to its idyllic location and regular live music, this beer garden, which offers both sun and shade, is ideal for additional events. The Franconian Wine Days, taking place at the end of July (July 20-23, 2017), are one such event. On offer are good wine, fine food, a Bavarian atmosphere, and live music – everything a lover of good food and drink could wish for.
