Do you know those evenings when you come home from a delicious meal and think it couldn't have been better? That's how my companion and I felt recently after leaving the "Kleines Max" restaurant on Hochbrückenstraße – between Munich's Isartor and the Maximilianstraße shopping street. The "Kleines Max" restaurant has been open for almost two years and is part of the popular Hotel Maximilian, which offers 54 rooms ranging in size from 31 to 90 square meters. "Kleines Max" offers upscale Mediterranean cuisine for hotel guests and visitors alike. Besides the excellent food, friendly service, and cozy atmosphere, the restaurant and hotel are incredibly peaceful, located right in the heart of Munich. We stepped inside and immediately forgot we were in the vibrant city center.
Restaurant „Kleines Max“: A place to relax – right in the heart of Munich
During our evening visit, we opted for a round table – designed for four people – in the cozy conservatory. The restaurant offers approximately ten inviting tables, all elegantly set. The courtyard, the sunny terrace with about ten additional comfortable tables, and the covered, glass-enclosed conservatory are all idyllic and completely private, ensuring a truly relaxing and comfortable atmosphere throughout the evening. In summer, the conservatory can be fully opened, allowing you to enjoy a leisurely breakfast or dinner in the heart of a verdant oasis – simply idyllic. The restaurant's decor is stylish and perfectly complements the overall concept. Dark furniture, white tablecloths, orchids and plants in the corners, small flowers on the tables, candlelight during meals, and soft lighting all contribute to a warm and inviting ambiance.
Convincing cuisine – from appetizer to dessert, whether in the morning or evening.
As we sat down, we were presented with the drinks and wine list, as well as the folded food menu. Even before entering the restaurant, two handwritten signs on the building's facade offered information about the available dishes, and there was another handwritten recommendation for the evening in the hotel/restaurant's entrance area. On our visit, this recommendation was "Guinea fowl breast with chanterelles, vegetables, and potatoes." Outside the restaurant, we were tempted by dishes such as sweet potato soup with truffles and entrecote of Argentinian beef with Mediterranean vegetables and potatoes in a truffle sauce. Our mouths were watering, and we went inside.
The restaurant's menu isn't particularly extensive, but true to the motto "quality over quantity," "Little Max" impresses with fantastic dishes. We opted for a fish soup with rouille (€12.90) and the aforementioned sweet potato soup (€5.90). A basket of fresh baguette bread accompanied our meals, and it was replenished throughout the evening without us even having to ask. Before ordering our main course, we chose our drinks and were first served an aperitif (Crémant Bouvet rosé, Loire – with a subtle raspberry note) (0.1l/€7.50), which was very sparkling and deliciously refreshing. For our appetizers and main courses, we chose a Lugana – Cantina Presca (2013) (0.2l/€9.80) and a Riesling – Pfaffmann from the Palatinate (2013) (0.2l/€9.50) – both wines tasted excellent. Due to my pronounced preference for Lugana, I am a rather discerning white wine enthusiast – but I was not disappointed with my choice.
Before the appetizers were served, we received a small amuse-bouche of cured salmon on fennel salad with citrus fruit. Absolutely delicious and very fresh. The appetizers arrived simultaneously, hot, and in ample portions. Both soups were a true delight. Very flavorful and, with the accompanying bread, simply divine. Neither of us needed to add any extra salt, but to our taste, it wasn't oversalted and was just right. We chose our main courses immediately afterward and opted for the aforementioned entrecote of Argentinian beef (€22.90) and fresh salmon with rosemary potatoes on a bed of fresh market vegetables (€20.50). These two dishes also arrived at the same time and tasted superb. I hardly had to cut the large piece of salmon at all, as it practically melted in my mouth. My companion's beef was also delicious and, combined with the vegetables, made for a perfect main course.
The friendly restaurant manager, Josef Koller, told us that meat dishes are always on the menu, as the regular customers insist on them. Otherwise, the menu at the "Kleines Max" restaurant changes approximately every two months, so you're always treated to new delicacies. The menu also features a "Dessert of the Day" (from €4.90, depending on the selection), which isn't described in detail and changes regularly. After seeing the list of available desserts, we simply couldn't resist and opted for a divine panna cotta and an orange cake. What can I say... everything was perfect from start to finish, and there was absolutely nothing to complain about.
In addition to the described evening menu (à la carte / from 5:00 pm to 10:30 pm), "Kleine Max" also offers a fantastic breakfast buffet. This can be enjoyed every day from 7:00 am to 10:30 am, and on weekends and holidays until 11:00 am. An impressive array of everything your heart desires is laid out. There is an extensive selection of different cheeses, cold cuts, ham, salmon, various types of bread, egg dishes – which are, of course, prepared to order – white sausages with crispy pretzels, porridge, jams, honey, spreads, hot drinks, and much more. For €18 per person, even non-hotel guests can treat themselves to a culinary delight in the morning and start their day off right.
Professional service from A to Z
The service is just as fantastic as the ambiance and the food. The staff is exceptionally competent, always up for a friendly chat and open to technical questions, always attentive to the guests yet never intrusive or bothersome. This is exactly how I wish it were everywhere. As we were leaving, we couldn't resist complimenting the chef, Antonino. This inviting restaurant also offers private and business events, functions, and celebrations. Everything is planned for you, allowing you to focus on your guests and your event. Card payments are, of course, accepted. Reservations can be made online or by phone. I can wholeheartedly recommend a visit to the "Kleines Max" restaurant. While the food and drinks are admittedly on the pricier side, the quality justifies the price, and you'll certainly be very satisfied. Thanks to its superb location, the restaurant is also ideal for romantic evenings for two, business lunches, or family gatherings – everyone can truly feel at ease here. Incidentally, if you have guests in Munich, a stay at this great hotel is also worthwhile. (Here Here you can find all the information about the Hotel Maximilian.
