A beautiful place: The Wilder Kaiser mountain range in Scheffau

The 5th Culinary Weeks in Scheffau am Wilden Kaiser | Since September 5th of this year, there's four times more reason to visit Scheffau am Wilden Kaiser. The 5th Culinary Weeks are currently taking place in Scheffau am Wilden Kaiser, and run until October 18th, 2020. During this event, four local gourmets are showcasing the culinary delights of this beautiful region with a total of 16 courses. As a big fan of the Wilder Kaiser region, I was there again this year (Read about experiences from 2018) and tasted two of the four menus and explored the region in bright sunshine.

The 5th Culinary Weeks in Scheffau – the program

This year, the motto is once again: "4 Gourmets – 16 Courses." For every guest of the culinary weeks, this means: Choose one (or of course, several) of the four participating restaurants, make a reservation, and enjoy the special culinary surprise menu created for the 5th Scheffau Culinary Weeks in a wonderful atmosphere. Each menu from the four Scheffau restaurants is different and exclusive.

This year's event includes the cozy „HUNTER'S INN„, the chic „LEITENHOF„, the attractive inn „WEBERBAUER„ and the wonderful inn „TO THE WILD EMPEROR„ Incidentally, all four restaurants are just a stone's throw from each other. So, if you're staying in a hotel in Scheffau, all four are easily accessible within minutes. Each of the four establishments will treat you and your loved ones to top-notch cuisine, with menus featuring culinary delights rarely found on typical restaurant menus. It's definitely worth taking advantage of the culinary weeks. The four surprise menus are all intentionally different, offering a diverse and exciting experience. Anyone wanting to visit all four Scheffau restaurants should take advantage of the voucher package offered during the 5th Scheffau Culinary Weeks. The package costs €159 per person, and upon presentation of the voucher, you will be served the culinary menu at each participating restaurant. This means that a menu (excluding drinks) costs just under €40 per person.

Here was the menu for me at Leitenhof.

It's especially enjoyable to explore the Wilder Kaiser and Scheffau during the day, taking in the stunning scenery and beautiful nature, and then ending the evenings with the delightful culinary surprise menus. I was also there for this special event and sampled two of the four different menus.

My stay at the Wilder Kaiser in Scheffau

Together with my companion, I was in Scheffau from Friday to Sunday. I stayed at  4-star superior Hotel Leitenhof – also one of the participating partners of the 5th Culinary Weeks in Scheffau. A family-run hotel with a very cozy atmosphere, friendly staff, a great setting, and of course, very good food. The culinary menu prepared by head chef Alexander Schmiedhofer in the evening was a complete success and surprised us with wonderful autumn creations (here (Only click if you want to take a look at the surprise menu from Leitenhof).

This hotel is ideal if you appreciate a cozy atmosphere surrounded by wood, yet still want excellent and attentive service. Breakfast is ample, fresh, and offers everything you could need. The Leitenhof also boasts a small wellness area with a sauna and steam room, as well as a turquoise natural pond with a jetty and sun loungers. I particularly enjoyed the option of renting modern bikes. I hopped on a bike and cycled to the picturesque Hintersteiner See, about nine kilometers away. The region is simply stunning, and you'll encounter cheerful and friendly people everywhere. So, if you're traveling to Scheffau, be sure to explore the surrounding area.

The cozy Jägerwirt inn in Scheffau

On the second evening of my stay, I spent time in the Jägerwirt I ate dinner. Even upon arrival, I was delighted by the cozy atmosphere and the warmth of the people. The view is breathtakingly beautiful. By the time I sat down on the spacious terrace and toasted with my glass of Crémant, I was completely relaxed and very much looking forward to my surprise menu. (Only read on if you want to know what was there!) The culinary surprise menu from the Jägerwirt, prepared by owner and head chef Andreas Salvenmoser, also completely delighted me.

The first course of the surprise menu at the Jägerwirt

The evening began with salted butter, venison and chamois smoked sausage with chili and thyme, and tomato spread. As a surprise treat, I was also served Jochberg smoked trout from the Krimbacher farm, herb dip, and melted tomato. Delicious! Then came a tangy zucchini and tomato medley with lime, fresh herbs, and crispy fried pike-perch fillet. Very fresh and, despite its pronounced spiciness, a successful start to the menu. Next came a chanterelle cream soup poured tableside with three kinds of sautéed mushrooms (porcini, russet, and chanterelle), followed by pink-roasted saddle of venison on cranberry-chocolate red cabbage, red wine ice cream, and bread dumplings. And yes, it tasted just as good as it sounds. The sweet finale was a truly delicious quark dumpling with sugar crumbs on pear chutney with yogurt ice cream from the Millinger farm. The pears came from their own pear trees, and the rest of the menu was also prepared with predominantly regional ingredients. I had the opportunity to chat at length with Jägewirt chef Andreas and grew increasingly fond of the team, the kitchen, and the location. (By the way: The Jägerwirt is the famous filming location for the popular series "SOKO Kitzbühel"—so you're eating in a place steeped in history ;-).)

Relaxation is guaranteed at the Wilder Kaiser in Scheffau.

My recommendation for you would be Try at least two, if not three, different restaurants in Scheffau during the 5th Culinary Weeks. Firstly, it's more fun because you'll get to know more locals, and secondly, you'll automatically discover just how diverse Scheffau's cuisine is. For me personally, there's nothing better than spending wonderful hours in a pleasant setting and knowing that a really good meal awaits you in the evening. I can promise you both of these things during your stay in Scheffau and at the various gourmet restaurants. You absolutely shouldn't miss the Jägerwirt! It's best to check out the Wilder Kaiser website – see below. There you'll also find clips and pictures from previous years' Culinary Weeks.

I was already in Scheffau in 2018 and enjoyed great meals at the Wilden Kais.

Here's how you can participate and enjoy!

If you already know you'd like to sample and experience all four gourmet menus, we recommend purchasing a voucher package from the Wilden Kaiser Tourism Association. You can do this by phone or via their website (see below). Afterwards, all you have to do is choose your preferred restaurant, make a reservation (important!), and come along. Conveniently for those of you living in Munich: the Wilder Kaiser is just over an hour's drive away via the A8 and A93. Contact details for individual reservations can be found below. Drinks are not included, but we recommend treating yourself to the wine pairings with your menu, as some fantastic combinations have been created. The culinary weeks are a worthwhile and memorable highlight – whether with your partner or as a gift for your loved ones. Enjoy!
