LA BOHÈME – New opening in Schwabing

La Boheme Schwabinger-Restaurant-32

La Bohème | Schwabing Well…where do I even begin? La Bohème is a restaurant that opened in mid-April 2016 on Leopoldstrasse, and after my first visit, it's definitely one of my new favorites. "How can you say that so definitively after just one visit?" some of you might be thinking, but believe me: La Bohème is simply top-notch in every respect.

La Bohème – location and ambience

Even upon entering, after crossing a large open area in front of the building and passing the restaurant's inviting terrace with its comfortable seating, you immediately feel welcome and at ease. A friendly woman holds the door open for you, politely asks about your reservation (highly recommended!), and shows you to your table. In my case, it was one of four round tables positioned in the center of the restaurant – very special tables indeed. These tables, along with their bright red, also circular, leather banquettes, form the heart of this exceptionally cool and chic establishment. The owner explained it to me this way: "No guest likes to sit in the middle of an open-plan restaurant. Here, it's the other way around. Everyone wants one of the four coveted tables, each forming its own private and secluded area." I can confirm this. You sit right in the middle of the restaurant, yet feel undisturbed in your own little "booth.".

The stylish theme continues: soaring ceilings with exposed black pipes, a cozy lounge with Chesterfield sofas, subtle colors, chic lamps with soft lighting, a large brick wall with white lettering, an inviting bar with seating, and of course, numerous tables already set for two or groups. I spent the entire evening at La Bohème marveling at and searching for the next perfectly coordinated design detail. Even the restrooms surprise with musical and visual highlights – but you'd better discover that for yourselves. 😉 Now, on to the food.

The culinary offerings at La Bohème

My companion asked how one could briefly and succinctly describe the cuisine or the menu at Restaurant La Bohème. "Simply awesome!" was the owner's initial, joking reply. It might sound arrogant, but—as I can now confirm after my own meal—it pretty much sums it up. For those who prefer a more concrete description: At La Bohème, you can expect French-German cuisine par excellence.

They serve breakfast, lunch (including business lunches), and dinner. The menus are extensive and offer a good mix. Along with your menu—which is quite stylish, by the way—you'll also receive a separate A4 sheet outlining the current set menu, available with four, five, or six courses for €65–€85. I highly recommend arriving very hungry—not because the portions are too large, but because you should really try a lot of everything on the menu. Whether you choose to order à la carte or from the set menu is, of course, entirely up to you.

Currently on the menu are dishes such as beef tartare with warm egg yolk and baked caper berry, burrata ravioli with tomato cream and smoked tomato, Taleggio potatoes with arugula and Parmesan, or asparagus baked in foil with Picandou cheese and king oyster mushrooms, to name just a few of the possible courses. For those who would like a tasting menu, various wines are offered with each course (currently all between €4.50 and €10.50/0.1 l). You should definitely take a look at the drinks menu and try both the wines and the long drinks. I immediately fell in love with the "Bohème Cup" made with herbal gin, SevenUp, ice cubes, orange, lemon, mint, apple, and cucumber. You absolutely must order it if you enjoy gin and like things a little sweet. Unbeatable!

To fully experience La Bohème, my companion and I opted for a reduced version of the set menu, along with a few small portions of other dishes to sample. The standard menu, which changes monthly, features variations of oysters (from €10.50), salads (from €5), soups (from €6.50), snacks (from €6), oven-baked breads and tarte flambée (from €7), beef and fish dishes (from €28 and €15 respectively), vegetarian options (from €10.50), and (currently) asparagus (from €16). There are also various desserts available (from €7 outside of the set menu). It's best if you take a look at the photo gallery below. Please note, however, that we received smaller portions of many dishes or dishes specially prepared for us so we could try more.

Lunch at La Bohème is served Monday to Friday from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm. Two different dishes are available each day. A lunch special, such as (currently) chicken fricassee with rice and peas, lasagna, or braised veal with mashed potatoes, starts at just €7. The business lunch menu costs a reasonable €15 and includes a soft drink and a coffee, as well as a small salad and a main course of your choice. For an additional €2, you can add a dessert from the dessert trolley. Anyone who misses out on dessert at La Bohème is truly missing out.

Breakfast is also on my list. Besides homemade brioche with jam and butter ("Simplicissimus" for €4.50), there are many other breakfast creations to choose from, such as "Berthold Brecht" with juniper-smoked ham, salami, Black Forest smoked ham, liverwurst, mixed pickles, butter, a boiled egg, and bread (€13.50), or "Oskar Maria Graf" with dark rye bread, North Sea shrimp, and a fried egg (€15.50). There are also numerous egg dishes and a variety of extras like avocado, Bircher muesli, pretzels, rolls, or fig mustard. So, here too, you can choose whether you want a breakfast prepared by La Bohème or prefer to create your own.

Prost mit dem "Bohèhme Cup".

Cheers to the "Bohèhme Cup".

Food review and personal conclusion

Most of the dishes of the current menus You'll find them in the corresponding order in the image gallery. You should definitely check them out. Variation with the oysters Tasting from the standard menu was a true explosion of flavors. I recommend ordering the set menu and also trying individual dishes from the à la carte menu – especially if you're in a larger group. For example, we sampled all four varieties of oven-baked bread (burrata, Roquefort cream, country ham, and avocado cream). Amazing, and ideal for vegetarians or those with a lighter appetite. We were also served all three varieties of delicious tarte flambée (Alsatian style, marinated vegetables, and potato) on a wooden board. If you love truffles, you should definitely try them. We also sampled meat (beef fillet from 180 grams with a choice of side dish) and fish (sea bass with pearl barley risotto and Riesling foam) as part of the set menu. They asked about the desired level of doneness, and everything was cooked to perfection. All in all, there was absolutely nothing to criticize at La Bohèhme.

I highly recommend a visit. The service is incredibly friendly and professional. They consistently ensure that you, as a guest, have everything you need at your table. The owner is often seen chatting with guests, ready for a relaxed conversation or, of course, to answer any questions you may have about the food. La Bohème has an incredibly cozy atmosphere. Be sure to try the long drink I mentioned and treat yourself to a truly delicious meal at La Bohème. The value for money is excellent. Also, be sure to save room for dessert and order the "Raspberry Millefeuille" (€9.50). Enjoy La Bohème – a culinary living room for every occasion, at any time of day. Whether for private or business events. I'm eager to see if you'll be as impressed as I am. The restaurant can be rented in whole or in part for events. Parking is readily available, and payment can be made by card on-site.
