La Piazza is the third Italian restaurant I've tried out of the ten "My Favorite Italian" restaurants. I'd been looking forward to the evening all week, as several acquaintances and friends had recommended La Piazza as a first-class Italian restaurant. The restaurant is located at Kölner Platz in Schwabing, and even from a distance, you can see the beautiful, huge terrace under expansive awnings with comfortable seating nestled among the greenery. When my companion and I arrived, we walked through the terrace to get inside. We were immediately greeted warmly and asked about our reservation. Since it was a rather rainy day, we opted for a table inside in the corner, from where we had a fantastic view of the entire, very long and cozy restaurant.
As soon as we sat down, the menus were brought to our dark table for two, which had a cozy corner bench made of dark wood, and we were asked for our drink orders. I opted for a Hugo (€5.50), and my companion chose a fruity and refreshing Prosecco with wild berries, which you could then scoop out with a spoon (also €5.50). The chilled drinks were served quickly, and the waiter assigned to our table was friendly, cheerful, and eager to make us happy. 😉 I was able to decide relatively quickly what I wanted to order and chose a fine fish soup with garlic baguette (€14.90) as a starter and grilled scampi (€23.90) as my main course. My companion wasn't quite ready yet, so I took a look around the restaurant.
As mentioned, the restaurant is quite long and narrow, boasting beautiful architecture with archways above the dark furniture, a prominent bar, high ceilings, and an overall cozy atmosphere. During our visit, most guests were seated outside on the spacious terrace, and only a few tables inside were occupied. We felt very comfortable and well looked after. The subtle lighting and the few, but well-chosen details create a pleasant and welcoming ambiance at La Piazza. When my companion was ready to eat, we decided to share our appetizers. My soup was divided between two small bowls, and my companion's Caprese salad with deliciously tender buffalo mozzarella (€8.50) was also shared. For her main course, my companion ordered Argentinian beef sirloin with chanterelle ragout (€23.90). The appetizers were excellent. The soup itself wasn't overly fishy, but the garnish was plentiful and varied. The portion size was also perfect. The buffalo mozzarella was, as mentioned, tender, soft, and very tasty. I'm a big mozzarella fan anyway, and I always find it a perfect appetizer. We were allowed to dress the mozzarella ourselves with balsamic vinegar and oil from the table. Once the empty plates were cleared, and after we asked if we wanted to proceed directly to the main course, the two dishes arrived. My scampi were divine. I could have eaten tons of them. They were seared to perfection and wonderfully marinated. My companion's meat with the ragù was served medium, as requested, and was juicy and delicious. This dish was also the perfect portion size. Both dishes, or rather all the dishes except for the tomato and mozzarella, were from La Piazza's weekly changing menu. Before the appetizer, we were also given a small amuse-bouche – a crusty slice of bread with tuna and avocado cream and tomatoes – very tasty and, in my opinion, always a welcome gesture.
The selection of dishes is well-balanced, with something for everyone. If you happen to visit La Piazza, you can order any of our dishes again without hesitation – provided they're still available. Of course, I didn't leave the restaurant without dessert – you know me that well. ;-). While my companion opted for a classic tiramisu (€6.50) with a cappuccino, I followed the friendly waiter's recommendation and chose mango fillet au gratin with mascarpone (€6.90). One of the best recommendations ever, and if I hadn't already been completely full, I would have ordered the same dessert again. Absolutely delicious. While not exactly ideal for a summer diet, it's one of the best desserts I've had at an Italian restaurant in a long time. In addition, they offer a daily changing menu with specials: delicious fish and meat dishes made from the finest, freshest ingredients. Of course, they also offer crispy stone-baked pizza, tasty pasta dishes, appetizers, and more.
Regarding La Piazza itself: The restaurant has been around since 1993; previously, a Bavarian restaurant occupied the space. In my opinion, it deservedly holds the title of "My Favorite Italian Restaurant," along with nine other restaurants. Private parties, celebrations, events, and corporate functions can also be held and planned here. La Piazza is definitely a very cozy restaurant with super friendly and attentive service, delicious food, and a varied and extensive menu. Try it out and let me know what you think. It's open daily from 11:30 pm to midnight; you can order hot dishes until 10:00 pm. Card payments are, of course, accepted.
