Surya – Delivery service review via pizza.de | Indian restaurant & delivery service I regularly report on Indian restaurants and delivery services. Today, as part of my current delivery service review series, I'd like to introduce you to Surya. Surya (Sanskrit for "sun") is an Indian restaurant in Trudering, which I've also visited in person. So I know what to expect in terms of quality, selection, and taste. The restaurant itself is cozy and inviting, and decorated in a typical "German-Indian" style (…just as Germans imagine Indian restaurants ;-)…). I felt very comfortable during my visit. Now it was time to test their delivery service.
Food offerings at Surya
I decided to order through pizza.de. Besides Lieferheld, I'm always logged into this platform anyway, so all I had to do was choose my preferred Indian restaurant or delivery service. I discovered Surya and decided to go with them – partly because I always find the comparison between eating in a restaurant and having food delivered to my door interesting.
The online menu offers appetizers, salads, soups, tandoori dishes and tandoori bread, vegetarian options, chicken, lamb, and duck dishes, as well as numerous fish and rice dishes. South Indian dishes – not something you'd find all that often in Munich's Indian restaurants and delivery services – are also available. For many Germans, "Indian" is synonymous with "Indian," but South Indian cuisine is significantly different. So be sure to explore this category as well.
Making vegetarians happy is always relatively easy with Indian restaurants. There are always numerous different meat-free dishes available – simply because traditional Indian cuisine isn't predominantly meat-based. You can also order my favorites, Palak Paneer, Malai Kofta, or Biryani, at Surya. Surya definitely covers all the classics and additional specialties of Indian cuisine.
Selection and evaluation of the dishes
I was starving. So was my companion. We ordered two Indian appetizers to start. Indians love breading and are big fans of Indian cheese. Paneer pakora (€4.50) combines both of these elements: breaded Indian cheese. Delicious and a great start. The portion was ample, and combined with the three famous sauces that came with it, which are usually eaten with papadums, it was a real treat. If you like cheese—not exactly like classic cheese, more like a blend of sheep's cheese and halloumi, but much milder—then my appetizer was perfect for you. My companion started with Achari Chicken Tikka (€6.90)—marinated chicken in small pieces. Nicely spiced, and like the paneer pakora, a good and satisfying start. If there are two of you and you have a bigger appetite, I can recommend both.
For our main courses, we opted for two different types of biryani – one with lamb (€12.30) and one vegetarian (€10.50). The base of each biryani is the same: rice with various vegetables. Sometimes – but not this time – it also includes slivered almonds, and always comes with yogurt as a dipping sauce. I really like this dish because it's healthy, filling, and "nice and clean." You can see exactly what's in it. I almost went for the shrimp version, but then stuck with the vegetarian one. A truly delicious dish. While I've certainly had better than the one at Surya, there was nothing to complain about, and the portions of both biryani were enormous. We also ordered a yogurt (Plain Dahi for €1.90) because we thought the included portion might not be enough. You can skip that step; they come with a huge pot of yogurt. My companion also chose a palak gosht (€12.20) as another main course. Palak is Indian for spinach. The dish we ordered consisted of lamb with spinach and spices. It was served with rice. A delicious and very filling dish, which surpassed the biryani in flavor and tasted wonderful. Generally speaking, lamb is a safe and reliable choice when ordering from Indian restaurants. After such a large quantity of hot appetizers and main courses, we didn't feel like dessert.
In total, we paid €48.30 and gave the gentleman at the door a tip. That's when the only negative incident began, for which neither pizza.de nor the quality of the food suffered. The driver didn't understand that I had already paid online, called his boss, and I had to spend almost five minutes – with my food getting colder and an Indian man waiting in the doorway – explaining how to pay online. In the end, he asked me to call the provider for him, etc., etc. Oh well… a short and unnecessary faux pas, but the food still tasted good.
Key facts and personal conclusion
Orders can be placed daily from 5:30 PM to 11:00 PM. Payment
There are many Indian restaurants and delivery services in Munich. Surya is one of them. I wouldn't recommend everything on the menu, but I know—from my own experience dining in and ordering—that some dishes are quite good. You can confidently order lamb dishes, appetizers, and also Palak Paneer and Malai Kofta (which I ate there) via pizza.de. Delivery was quick, and they included a small bowl of complimentary mango lassi and two pieces of papadum. (By the way: If Indians try to pass off papadum as an appetizer or course, it's always an insult. It's served like bread in any German restaurant.)
So I would order again. Feel free to message me if you're sitting in front of pizza.de and not quite sure what to order, and whether Surya's is any good.
