Mamasita am Isator – Recently, I went to Mamasita for dinner with a companion. Mamasita is a two-story restaurant – connected by a white, curved spiral staircase – located near the Isartor in Munich (S-Bahn station – all lines). The restaurant has been there for three years and offers Mexican and Spanish cuisine. Meat, fish, and vegetarian dishes are on the menu. I had been there a while ago and wanted to have dinner relatively spontaneously, but unfortunately, we couldn't get a table; the restaurant was completely full – including all the tables set up outside.

When I recently visited with my companion on another weekend, only five of the approximately 20 tables downstairs and another 15 upstairs were occupied. We were greeted by a friendly, young server immediately upon entering. We had made a reservation by phone beforehand, which in retrospect wasn't necessary that evening, and therefore had our pick of seats. We chose a table in the corner, directly in front of one of the walls adorned with brickwork and subtle lighting. Large screens embedded in the walls, featuring a digital campfire, further enhanced the cozy atmosphere. This was accentuated by the dim lighting, the individual decorative elements, and the overall comfortable and understated interior design.

Menu at Mamasita

We were asked relatively quickly after taking our seats if we had already decided, but then only ordered drinks, namely water and a juice spritzer. After that, we turned our attention to the Menu. This restaurant offers a relatively good selection of salads, tapas, appetizers, burgers, fajitas, and burritos. Standard offerings include a fruity tomato soup for €4.90 with basil and crispy butter croutons; various salads with antipasti vegetables, buffalo mozzarella, chicken breast strips, or goat cheese range from €7.90 to €12. In addition, there's a three-tiered "appetizer tower" with different dips, antipasti, and finger food options for €12.50 per person, as well as a wide variety of homemade tapas. Burgers average €12.50, and an Angus sirloin steak costs just under €19. Spare ribs, shrimp in garlic-chili olive oil, crispy chicken wings, and many other dishes are available at reasonable prices. The Mamasita Club Sandwich with triple toast, turkey breast, fried egg, tomato and salad, for example, is available for a fair €11.50.

Evaluation and selection of dishes

After browsing for a while, I opted for one of four different fajitas with freshly roasted vegetables, Mediterranean spices, and various dips for €12.50 (now €13.90 as of May 2016). The other fajitas, with a choice of beef strips, chicken breast, or a combination of both, cost between €14.90 and €16.90. My companion chose a burger with cheese for €12.50, or €13.50 with the option of bacon (still €12.50 as of May 2016). My vegetarian fajita tasted good, and I liked the presentation. You can customize everything yourself, meaning you can choose the amount of dips, vegetables, and small cheese cubes. When ordering, I also asked if the dish was spicy, and the server said no, which turned out to be true – not something that happens often. I couldn't finish all four small wheat tortillas. They were served separately in a warmed tortilla pan and stayed at a good temperature. Overall, I had no complaints about my meal. My companion's burger, unfortunately, was rather bland and boring with far too little sauce, as the picture might suggest. The meat was of decent quality and cooked okay, but nothing special. Stick to what you know. Burgers and Mexican food just don't mix. Serves them right. 🙂 The fries, on the other hand, were okay, but also basic and nothing special. You should probably get your burgers somewhere else (e.g., at the...). Drunken Cow Bar or the CA BA LUWhile Mamasita does Mexican cuisine quite well, we paid €34 including tip for two dishes and two drinks – just about at the upper limit for a Munich city center location, considering the quality of the food. If you want to try Mamasita, I'd recommend sticking with their Spanish-Mexican cuisine.

As mentioned, the atmosphere is quite pleasant, and the interior is nicely decorated. Mamasita features a bar in the back left corner, quieter seating areas upstairs, very friendly and attentive service, and friendly staff. On warmer days, you can also sit outside on the terrace. As I mentioned, I was there once and couldn't get a table, and the next time it was practically empty. So, it's best to play it safe and reserve a table.

On top of that, Mamasita is a popular bar late at night – as evidenced by the extensive Drinks menu. All football matches are shown in the restaurant, and from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM it's "Cocktail Happy Hour" every day – then all cocktails are €5.90, or the jumbo versions for €8.50. (They used to serve lunch, but not anymore (May 2016).)

Hard facts

Card payments are accepted at Mamasita. Breakfast is served on weekends from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Opening hours are Monday to Thursday from 5:00 PM to 1:00 AM, Fridays until 2:00 AM, and Saturdays from 10:00 AM to 2:00 AM. On Sundays, we're open from 10:00 AM to 1:00 AM. Have fun trying it out (and unfortunately, also having fun finding a parking spot).
