Biancas Tasty Tour Flughafen MuenchenMAREDO Steakhouse at the airport – I was really looking forward to trying the MAREDO Steakhouse at Munich Airport. Firstly, because I hadn't yet tried any meat as part of my airport food tour, and secondly, because I was already familiar with MAREDO from several visits to Munich's city center. So, even before I sat down, I had certain expectations for this ninth stop on Bianca's Tasty Tour.

What can you expect at the MAREDO Steakhouse?

The MAREDO Steakhouse is located in Terminal 2 on level 05, right next to the Mangosteen and the bagutta. And, quite unexpectedly, they serve steaks! 😉 And in all sorts of sizes and cuts. Something for everyone, from ladies to burly men, available as a lunch special or as a regular menu item. The clearly laid-out menu also provides an overview of the different steak cuts and their location on the animal. From sirloin, rump, rib-eye, T-bone, and filet mignon, you can choose what appeals to you most. The menu also mentions the origin and quality of the meat right at the beginning. The meat at MAREDO Steakhouse comes traditionally from the finest Black Angus and Hereford cattle – raised in Argentina and Uruguay. These animals have grazed only on grasses and herbs, guaranteeing high-quality meat with a fantastic aroma. So, I was eager to see what awaited me. I was craving something hearty, something tender and "unbeatably good," so I grabbed the menu and started making my selection.

Food offer and selection

The menu is divided into a regular menu and a lunch menu. Lunch is served Monday to Friday from 11:30 am to 5:00 pm, and the menu changes weekly with new offerings. During my visit, these included, for example, strips of sirloin and turkey breast with a baked potato and béarnaise sauce, or a juicy pork tenderloin with herb butter, potato wedges, and sour cream (for €7.80). Alternatively, a generous salad bar is available at lunchtime (for €3.90). This was set up during my visit and offered numerous different salad options – a fantastic deal for €3.90. Those who prefer a salad at lunchtime can order marinated chicken breast with Pimientos de Padrón (small peppers) and half an ear of corn. The salad bar is included with this dish (for €9.80). So, here, it's truly all about the meat. Similarly, the lunch specials also include a filet steak (150 grams / €14.50), a rump steak (180 grams / €12.90), or a rib-eye steak (200 grams / €12.90), plus the buffet price. According to the manager, the classic and perennial favorite is the "MAREDO Burger" (€9.90), topped with South American beef in a brioche bun, and a choice of cheddar cheese or bacon and potato wedges.

On the regular menu, you'll find the different steaks categorized by type and weight. I already listed the various types earlier. Prices start at €13.90 for, say, a 180-gram sirloin steak, and go up to €39.90 for a 650-gram T-bone steak – usually the most expensive option on the menu. You can also help yourself to the salad bar for an additional €3.90 – the same price as at lunchtime. Another cool feature: you can have your steak cooked "English" (with a still-red center and nice and juicy) or "Medium Rare" (pink to red inside with a brown crust) on a hot stone and cook it to your liking right at the table. Every steak is freshly cut, so you can order larger quantities and sizes that differ from the menu. They also occasionally have meat from, for example, Ireland.

Beef fillet (180 grams, medium) – mmmhhh!

As for side dishes, you can choose from eleven different options. From vegetable skewers (€4.90), green beans (€3.90), and corn on the cob (€3.50), to classic fries (€2.90), potato and celery puree (€3.50), long grain and wild rice (€2.90), or stir-fried vegetables (€4.90), there's something for everyone. The MAREDO also boasts a wide selection of sauces (…a good dip makes every good steak even better…), with ten different options (three sauces from €2.50, five dips at €1.50 each, or chimichurri and herb butter).

A separate page on the menu is dedicated to the classics. Here you'll find the aforementioned MAREDO burger, mixed grill platters, grilled skewers, or platters for two (with 640 grams of beef rump, lamb, pork, and turkey, plus corn on the cob, potato wedges, fries, vegetable skewers, and more for €39.90), and much more. You'll also find a Wiener Schnitzel (not a Wiener Schnitzel!), sliced meat in sauce, fajitas (for vegetarians), and salmon fillet. Salads are also available (from €4.90 to €10.90 for Caesar Chicken Salad). Ordering the vegetarian buffet costs €5.50. If you prefer something warm to start with, order one of the soups or other appetizers (between €3.90 and €8.50 for, for example, lobster bisque with cream and dill).

Caesar salad as a starter

I opted for a filet steak (180 grams / €19.90) (…you only live once…) with a vegetable skewer (€4.90) on the side. Before that, I had a small Caesar salad (€4.90). My companion chose a rump steak (180 grams / €14.90, but €12.90 as a lunch special) with potato wedges (€2.90) and guacamole (€1.50). The herb butter was an extra 90 cents. To drink, we had a passion fruit spritzer (0.5l / €4.20) and a large bottle of still water for myself (0.75l / €5.80) – it's no secret that drinks are their biggest seller. 😉 So, we had to wait for the food to arrive. Meanwhile, we were served a basket with two types of bread and garlic dip.

Review of the food and service

My small Caesar salad arrived promptly and tasted exactly as I imagine a Caesar salad should. It wasn't presented with any fuss, nor was there anything to complain about. Just a perfectly ordinary salad as a starter. As soon as my plate was empty, our main courses arrived. My companion received her rump steak with potato wedges, and I got my filet steak with… well… unfortunately not a vegetable skewer, but a "meat skewer." I was a little confused, since there were already 180 grams of delicious meat in front of me, and the skewer – which, by the way, I didn't even see listed on the menu – contained at least the same amount of meat again. So, I unfortunately had to send the skewer back and still wanted my vegetable skewer. The friendly waitress apologized, and I tucked into my meat. It was fantastic! Truly sensational and cooked medium. I was completely satisfied, except for the side dish. Unfortunately, this was also missing by the time my plate was empty, and so, after we had both finished, I was served a huge, but generally very delicious, vegetable skewer. These things happen, it was just a bit inconvenient and a forced "food combining" for me. 😉 My companion's meat, unfortunately, wasn't cooked medium, but completely well-done. I have to be so blunt about it in this case. So, my anticipation for the meat was somewhat dampened. However, the quality was still noticeably good. The wedges and guacamole were fine.

Ambience

The restaurant seats 150 people in various seating areas. The open and airy atmosphere creates a pleasant ambiance. We sat along the glass railing and had a good view of the activity directly below us at the airport. The decor is simple, but not uncomfortable. Seating is available at tables for two or four. Larger groups are, of course, also welcome. Munich Airport employees receive a discount of 101,000 to 3,000 euros.

Key facts and personal conclusion

There are a total of 50 MAREDO locations, currently four of which are in Munich. The MAREDO at the airport is busiest around lunchtime, starting at approximately 12:00 PM, and again in the evening from around 6:00 PM. Reservations are recommended. Card payments are accepted, and with a minimum spend of €20, you'll receive three hours of free parking. Two different breakfast options are offered from Monday to Sunday, 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM: one sweet and one savory. You can also pick up items like focaccia, bread, ciabatta, and more from the counter. Regular opening hours are 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM, but you can still place an order at 10:00 PM and receive your delivery.

My personal conclusion: The meat is truly excellent – as long as it's cooked to perfection. My beef fillet was absolutely divine. I forgave the fact that the side dish essentially became a second, vegetarian main course, and I would definitely come back. My companion, however, probably won't be returning anytime soon. Perhaps you should explicitly mention during your visit that the cooking to perfection is very important to you, because generally speaking, the food at MAREDO at Munich Airport is very good and the service is friendly.
