Definitely worth a visit: The POSEIDON BALDHAM restaurant near Munich

POSEIDON BALDHAM: Authentic Greek cuisine – classic Greek cuisine, modernly interpreted, enjoyed in a cozy atmosphere || Recently, my companion and I visited the restaurant located in the Munich area „POSEIDON BALDHAM“"During meals. In my opinion, there aren't many truly good and authentic Greek restaurants in Munich and the surrounding area. However, with Poseidon in Baldham, which I've visited several times now, I've definitely discovered a place that you, as a fan of Greek cuisine, should also visit. The menu features Greek classics with modern interpretations, varied recommendations, and also creations for vegetarians. You dine in a cozy atmosphere with plenty of space between tables.".

Get to know the POSEIDON BALDHAM

The POSEIDON BALDHAM restaurant first opened its doors to us in 2005 and is now in its 17th year offering authentic Greek cuisine in the Munich area under the management of owner Giannikis Joannis. Located in a large, detached house, the cozy restaurant seats approximately 150 to 160 hungry guests; the adjacent, covered outdoor seating area accommodates another 200 guests.

The Greek restaurant is furnished exactly as one would wish for on a slightly more upscale Greek holiday, or upon entering a great restaurant back home: a glass-enclosed conservatory, spacious dark wood tables, Mediterranean decorative elements on the walls, and subtle lighting and accessories here and there. To enter the restaurant, you cross the parking lot in front, walk through part of the adjacent outdoor seating area, arrive in the glass-enclosed conservatory, and then find yourself directly inside the restaurant, where you are immediately registered and warmly welcomed.

Cozy rooms, a beer garden and a glass-enclosed winter garden are part of the restaurant, which opened in 2005.

Those who prefer to sit indoors are shown to the largest, more secluded section of the restaurant. Each area – whether the outdoor seating, beer garden, conservatory, or restaurant area – has its own unique and cozy atmosphere. Personally, I like the conservatory best.

The restaurant also includes another, separate room in the basement of the building, which can be rented for celebrations, events and functions for up to 30 people – naturally also with culinary services provided by the Poseidon restaurant.

I'll definitely be there in the summer: The outdoor seating area of the POSEIDON

Immediately after you have found your cozy spot, you will be warmly greeted again at the table by your assigned staff member, served an ouzo – in accordance with Greek tradition – and handed the menus – the enjoyment can begin!

The menu of the restaurant POSEIDON BALDHAM

The menu offers numerous traditional dishes and is divided into clear categories. It begins with a small but select range of aperitifs, cocktails, and long drinks, followed by typical Greek meze – hot or cold – and various appetizers. The appetizers include classic Greek starters such as octopus, grilled pepperoni, baked eggplant and zucchini, shrimp saganaki, baked mussels, dolmades (stuffed grape leaves with minced meat and rice), and cold and hot appetizer platters. Next come various cheese dishes – feta in phyllo pastry, baked sheep's cheese, or cheese-stuffed peppers. These are followed by salads (farmer's salad, Poseidon salad with halloumi and mushrooms, or mixed salad) and vegetarian and vegan options. For example, vegetarians can look forward to a "vegetarian platter" with various meatless delicacies, and vegans can order a vegan burger with patty, vegan cheese, salad and fries.

The main part of the menu consists of fish, meat, grilled, oven-baked, and pan-fried dishes. Fish lovers will be delighted with fresh fish (sea bream, sea bass, or salmon fillet), as well as other fish dishes such as the "special grilled fish platter," grilled or baked baby calamari, Atlantic sole fillet, and various other fish platters.

Great wines – mostly from Greece – are part of the culinary offerings.

From the grill, you can expect classics like sutzuki, bifteki, souvlaki, gyros, farmer's-style calf's liver, lamb fillet, pork fillet skewers, spare ribs, rack of lamb, Corfu, Delphi, Poseidon, Paros, village, or fillet platters with various combined Greek dishes, as well as a "Rhodes Platter" for two. All grilled dishes are usually served with rice; however, you can also order vegetables, fries, or potatoes as alternatives.

Those who enjoy baked dishes can order pasta with seafood, classic Greek moussaka, or lamb shank with various side dishes – sometimes including typical Greek orzo pasta. From the pan, there are traditional and typically Greek options like gyros, pork and turkey fillet, or fresh mushrooms with Metaxa sauce, rice, and cheese. Several children's dishes are also available.

Desserts are not part of the standard menu. This is because there are regularly changing desserts on the specials menu, and there is also an additional display case with cakes and small desserts in the conservatory – you're sure to find something you like there.

Regularly changing recommendation card

The three appetizers (from left to right): Fava Santorinis, Meze, Goat cheese with beetroot carpaccio

Anyone who regularly eats Greek food knows that it can quickly become monotonous. Not so at POSEIDON BALDHAM. The daily specials menu, which changes every one to two months, ensures regular variety. It's also divided into aperitifs, starters, and main courses. A dessert and several wine recommendations are also included. My companion and I chose two starter highlights from the current specials menu, partly to show you just how diverse and varied POSEIDON BALDHAM's culinary offerings are.

My personal visit to the site

We arrived hungry and left full, happy, and satisfied. As mentioned, it wasn't our first visit, so I already knew we'd be in for another culinary highlight. And that's exactly what happened! We started the evening with three different appetizers and enjoyed a cold meze platter with tzatziki, eggplant and octopus salad, taramasalata, and feta cheese. Absolutely delicious! My favorite of the appetizers was the octopus salad. Appetizers number two and three were both from the daily specials menu. There was "Grilled goat cheese on beetroot carpaccio with passion fruit pearls and walnuts" as well as "Octopus salad on fava Santorinis (chickpea purée) and capers." Although I'm the biggest goat cheese fan in the world, I actually liked the octopus salad even better, or at least as much as the goat cheese with the delicate passion fruit pearls. "Fava Santorinis" with Cretan was completely new to me and has definitely made it onto my list of the best Greek appetizers. You absolutely have to try it!

A must-try: Fava Santorinis with Cretan and octopus. So delicious!

We enjoyed our appetizers with a fantastic Greek wine, which we'd already ordered on our last two visits to POSEIDON: the Ktima Biblia Chora, a Sauvignon Blanc from Kavala with intense fruit aromas, fresh and aromatic. Definitely my wine recommendation for you.

For their main course, my companion chose the aforementioned "Paros Platter" with gyros, calamari, tzatziki, rice, and mixed salad. – Yes, very classic, but also very good. I pilfered a little gyros and ate it alongside my chosen main course, "Musaka." Musaka is a kind of casserole with eggplant and potato slices, as well as minced meat, and is baked in the oven with béchamel sauce – a truly delicious dish.

My companion ordered the classic "Paros plate".

We enjoyed our main courses with a very special wine that will long remain in my memory as a reminder of my visit. We were served a "Cyrus One La tour Mellas"—a Cabernet Franc-Merlot from Achinos with sweet fruit, spicy floral notes, and—according to the menu—a real must for Bordeaux fans. Be sure to check out the fantastic Wine list of the POSEIDON BALDHAM, It's worth it. It's constantly being expanded.

Right from the start, my eye was drawn to the dessert on the specials menu: there was homemade crème brûlée with forest fruits and a beautifully crisp caramel sugar crust.

Conclusion: I'll definitely be back! Thank you so much.

Personal conclusion

For me personally, POSEIDON BALDHAM is definitely a restaurant worth returning to. Firstly, of course, because of the delicious and authentic food, but also because you feel warmly welcomed and at ease from your very first visit. Owner Joannis likes to stop by your table, chat with you for a bit, and make sure you feel completely comfortable. Both the well-known Greek classics and the slightly more unusual dishes from the (recommended) menu are highly recommended. I can wholeheartedly recommend a visit. I also appreciate that they celebrate traditional Greek cuisine while constantly offering new delicacies on their recommended menu. Be sure to grab the wine list and ask for recommendations – it's well worth it.

My tip: Order one or two starters and two main courses and try your way through the menu with your companions. This way you'll get a good feel for the cuisine and can also enjoy some of the daily specials. Please leave my regards when you visit. Have fun and Καλή όρεξη (Bon appétit)!
