My Vietnamese appetizer soup
Quan Com | Vietnamese restaurant in Neuhausen A while ago, I went to Quan Com restaurant in Neuhausen with a friend, not specifically for a restaurant review. I can't remember exactly who recommended it, but I did know that the restaurant had been recommended to me. So, after a quick phone call beforehand, we spontaneously drove to the Vietnamese restaurant in Neuhausen to try it out. I love Asian cuisine. Wok dishes, curries, Asian-style fish, and also sushi, noodle bowls, and the like – it's all right up my alley. So I was really looking forward to visiting Quan Com, especially since personal recommendations usually turn out quite well.
We entered the seemingly cozy and visually inviting restaurant, were registered after about a minute, and shown to a table for two. Quan Com offers authentic Vietnamese cuisine. The recipes originate from Hanoi, Hue, and Saigon and are always prepared with fresh ingredients. I liked the restaurant immediately. The view into the open kitchen is a great feature, allowing you to watch the food being prepared, depending on your seat. Unfortunately, this wasn't the case for us. We were assigned a table near the entrance. I didn't particularly like the table, partly because I had my back to the entrance, but we weren't allowed to move. Oh well. We stayed at the small table for two. The tables are made of solid wood, the walls are decorated with Asian art, and the room is dominated by a striking and inviting bar (not for sitting). Subtle lighting in the evenings creates a cozy atmosphere.
The duck meat dish
The lady who served us was (understandably, to some extent) quite stressed and – as is often the case in busy restaurants – only half-present, because everything was occupied and she was very busy. There was no time for individual guests. We were given the menu, chose a still water (0.3l for €1.90) and a Saigon beer (0.33l for €3.40). (Saigon was the former name of what is now Ho Chi Minh City, and that's where this beer is brewed.) Then we studied the dishes. The menu is divided into appetizers and soups, main courses, Vietnamese specialties, an extensive tea and beverage menu, and several desserts.

We opted for two appetizers and two main courses. I chose a "Chua Tom" soup with shrimp, fresh mushrooms, pineapple, lemongrass, coriander, and cherry tomatoes (€3.90), which was quite peppery but still very delicious. My companion chose the "Quan Com Special Mix" (€8.90) – chicken fillet skewers, tempura shrimp, homemade spring rolls, and a spring roll with various dipping sauces. Both the soup and the appetizer plate were attractively presented, and both tasted great, although the chicken was a tad dry. The combination of different dipping sauces was fantastic. Once the plates were cleared, we moved on to the main course. Here we chose the „Vit Curry – Nuoc Dua“ (for €11.90), which is crispy duck with rice and crunchy vegetables in curry sauce, and the „Muc Xao Toi“ (for €12.90) – a fried giant squid cut into pieces with crunchy vegetables.

Quan Com also offers lunch. From Tuesday to Friday, between 11:30 am and 3:00 pm, they serve a variety of affordable lunch dishes for between €6.90 and €8.50. The menu includes everything from king prawns, duck, and chicken breast to tofu and more – just like the regular menu. Vegetarians should definitely find something to their liking. Price-wise, I wouldn't describe the restaurant as cheap or overpriced. Quan Com is closed on Mondays. It's open Tuesday through Sunday from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm and from 5:00 pm to 11:30 pm.
Key facts and personal conclusion
The main courses were served quickly and attractively presented. The portions weren't huge, but they were filling. Both the duck and my giant squid with vegetables were delicious. There was nothing to complain about, but it wasn't anything special either. You know that feeling when you take that first bite, that first forkful of something and are delighted by the unique flavor, and you decide right then and there that you'll be back? It wasn't quite like that here, but it wasn't bad either. Everything was fresh, fairly simple, but perfectly adequate. We skipped dessert—partly because the place was rather uncomfortable and the atmosphere was quite busy—and paid just under €50 by card.
Although I can't really find anything to criticize, I didn't feel entirely comfortable. For me, friendly, attentive service that isn't just "functional" is very important. It's simply part of feeling at ease. The food was "okay," but that's not why I went there. There are better Vietnamese restaurants in the city, in my opinion. You can try it out and tell me what you think. Maybe I just caught them on a bad day. You can also pick up a flyer there, which clearly lists all the dishes and shows you what's available for takeout (at a discount) both in the evening and at lunchtime.
