Restaurant No 15 LogoRestaurant No. 15 – modern French cuisine in Schwabing – What an idyllic and culinary paradise I recently discovered, and I absolutely must share it with you! I know I often get carried away with my words when it comes to food and, consequently, in the articles I write about it, especially when it comes to sharing my experiences. But this visit to the French restaurant No. 15 will certainly be unforgettable for a long time. Now that the evening, including the six-course meal, is over and I've processed the impressions, I can say that the wonderful feeling during and after my visit is definitely due to the overall impression the restaurant conveys: excellent cuisine, an inviting ambiance, and competent service.

Restaurant No. 15 – Arrival and Ambiance

I entered the cozy restaurant, which seats about 30 guests, around 7:15 p.m., and my companion and I were the last to leave. It would be a mistake for any gourmet not to know Restaurant No. 15. If only because—unlike other French restaurants in Munich—it interprets French cuisine in a refreshing, new, and modern way. No over-the-top fuss, no unnecessary frills on the plate, and no menus that simply feature the (for Germans) French classics. No, every course—they offer five- or six-course menus as well as à la carte options—is unique and compelling. But before I started tasting, I first let my gaze wander around the restaurant.

Fresh flowers, decorations, and candles adorned the two- and four-person tables (approximately ten in total, depending on the arrangement), all covered with light gray tablecloths. Heavy red curtains hung from the tall windows, and Easter decorations were coordinated. Colorful pictures graced the walls, dark furniture and brown leather banquettes filled the room, accompanied by soft French music and subdued background lighting. The atmosphere was cozy, and a feeling of well-being came naturally. I sat there, looked around, and was promptly served. My aperitif, a refreshing "No. 15" starter with Lillet, elderflower, and lime, arrived as quickly as I had ordered, along with a fresh bread basket containing two different homemade loaves (baguette and spelt bread) and salted butter. And then my exquisite meal began. The menu at Restaurant No. 15 changes seasonally, depending on the availability of the best quality ingredients at the market. Quality in every single ingredient. Freshness is a top priority here and is clearly noticeable in each course: freshness on every plate.

Example menu or the menu I ate

To whet your appetite a little, here is the 6-course menu we ate that evening:

– Amuse I: Crème Comte with dried black olives, herbs and homemade grissini
– Amuse II: Ceviche of Hamachi – Yellowfin mackerel on radish tartare with marinated herb vinaigrette
– Seasonal spring vegetables on vegetable broth (thickened with agar-agar – a type of „Japanese fish glue“) | accompanied by a ‚Little James‘ Basket Press’ Blanc 2015, Sauvignon Blanc
– Peas with cuttlefish ink, autumn trumpet mushrooms and bread crumble | accompanied by a dry 2015 Riesling from Robert Weil in the Rheingau region
– Monkfish (wild-caught) with carrot, Romanesco and „Ficoide Glaciale“ – a type of ice plant | accompanied by a robust and elegant Chardonnay from Maurice Ecard in Burgundy
– Ravioli Pékinois „Jiaozi“ filled with Ibérico pork secreto and corn consommé | accompanied by a 2011 Bordeaux red wine, a Cahors wine, Château de Chabenet from the Malbec grape (30% Merlot | 70% Malbec)
– Mieral Dombes duck (breast) with beetroot and broad beans on orange sauce | accompanied by the Mallorcan wine ÀN/2 – Anima Negra
– Brillat Savarin Cheesecake with Glaçage Blanc and raspberries | accompanied by a sweet wine, a 2012 Chateau Haut Rian Cadillac
– Petit fours in the shape of „Madleine“ – a French pastry made from „shortcrust pastry“

Wow! Ravioli filled with Iberiko meat.

Personal review

…and „Yes!“, it tasted as good as it sounds. My favorites, besides the incredibly fresh yellowfin tuna, were definitely the monkfish and the melt-in-your-mouth duck with beetroot, followed by the vegetable bouillon, also for its refined presentation. The clear advantage of every course: a clean, uncluttered approach, allowing each ingredient to be clearly discernible and ensuring that no component is masked or distorted by too much „here and there“ on the plate. I didn't dislike anything; everything left me wonderfully satisfied. No, really, there wasn't anything that felt out of place, anything I could have done without, or anything I would have preferred presented differently. (I would have gladly ordered more duck…). The talent for culinary perfection may also stem from the fact that the French owner and chef has been a fixture in Munich's restaurant scene for over 40 years, consistently cooking at a high level and providing exceptional cuisine. A true culinary delight, without a doubt.

A little piece of summer in Schwabing

Facts and information

A 5-course meal costs €65 per person, a 6-course meal €72. Wine pairings (5 or 6 glasses of 0.1l wine) are an additional €40 or €48, respectively. A 6-course meal including wine costs €120 at this top level, virtually unbeatable in Munich. I recommend choosing the 6-course option, partly because the sequence of dishes is perfectly coordinated, and I would have hated having to decide which course to skip (which is possible with the 5-course option). À la carte dishes start at €20 and currently go up to a maximum of €49 for, for example, three different tapas, a bouillabaisse, and a dessert.

In summer, you can also relax on the beautiful, secluded outdoor terrace. It offers space for an additional 30 guests and boasts sunshine, a relaxed atmosphere, and, of course, exquisite summer creations – French, modern, and delicious. If you're looking for the perfect setting for fantastic menus, fine wines, attentive service, and a relaxed, feel-good ambiance – head to Restaurant No. 15. It's well worth it.
