A while ago, I was chatting with an acquaintance at a café about summer, my work, coffee, and other related topics. That's how we got onto the subject of selosoda. I hadn't heard of the new brand selosoda before, nor had I ever heard of a refreshing drink made from the skins of sun-dried coffee cherries. My curiosity was piqued, and given my interest in innovative food products, I decided to try selosoda right away. So I bought a bottle and gave it a taste.

As mentioned, selosoda is an invigorating soft drink. It's made from the skins of sun-dried coffee cherries. The skin, or husk ("ŝelo"), of the coffee cherry is usually discarded after harvesting or, at best, used as fertilizer. Until now, using it further was rather uncommon, and only the coffee bean itself was used for enjoyable coffee. But that's about to change! Not only are the coffee skins and pulp being processed in some regions of Central America, Bolivia, and Panama, but thanks to the creative idea of inventor Laura Zumbaum, this is now also happening here in Germany – with selosoda.

selosoda: Origin and product test

I tried selosoda and was surprised. Refreshment and a "new taste" simultaneously hit the palate, tongue, and taste buds. The first sip was unusual and novel, but you quickly and happily get used to the fresh selosoda flavor. Of course, if you don't like coffee, this isn't for you. selosoda tastes good and is light (just 8kcal/100ml) and has about the same amount of natural caffeine as two espressos (approx. 40mg/250ml). A splash of lemon and orange juice, no artificial additives, flavorings, or sweeteners are also part of the drink. While drinking it, you can taste a little fresh orange, tart wild honey, sweet melon, and mild tobacco. The drink also has a pleasant amount of carbonation. Personally, I don't like things too fizzy, but in combination with selosoda, I really enjoyed it.

In addition to its delicious taste, selosoda also boosts the yield of organically and fairly grown Arabica plants. Utilizing the coffee husks increases the yield by approximately 501 THP3T. Until now, it was little known that the sun-dried husks contain the full spectrum of aromas and the entire caffeine content of the coffee bean. This led to the idea for selosoda, firstly because Laura Z. was captivated by the fruity flavor after her first "Cascara" (tea made from the coffee cherry husk) at a London coffee roastery, and secondly because she was fascinated by the plant's inherent usability and sustainability. The idea of offering ice-cold Cascara in bottles was developed in collaboration with a former colleague, and selosoda was born.

My personal conclusion & hard facts about selosoda

I personally really like selosoda. The drink is available in 250ml reusable glass bottles for €3.30 each. Sure, it's not exactly cheap, but in my opinion, this soft drink shouldn't be consumed constantly as a "water substitute," but rather enjoyed now and then as a refreshing pick-me-up or a little energy boost. With its intense flavor, selosoda is definitely worth a try. Anyone who likes the taste of coffee will also like selosoda. Whether enjoyed straight as a refreshing drink or mixed with gin in the evening, for example, it goes well with everything. At only 20 calories per bottle, it won't hurt your waistline either.
