I recently showed you this Primafila in Nymphenburg This is the first of ten Italian restaurants featured in Munich's "My Favorite Italian Restaurant" series. As promised, I will be testing each of the ten restaurants. Recently, I visited Romans, and of course, I want to tell you about it. Romans in Neuhausen should already be familiar to most Munich residents who enjoy dining out. It's considered one of THE Italian restaurants in Munich for good reason. The restaurant is located in Neuhausen, not far from Munich's Rotkreuzplatz.
I was already familiar with Romans before my recent visit, having eaten there several times with a companion. Furthermore, I've often recommended it to acquaintances, friends, colleagues, and others in Neuhausen whenever I needed a place to eat that was both delicious and cozy. That's why I was so pleased to be able to stop by again recently. You enter the restaurant by crossing part of the inviting terrace. In the summer, it's always packed with guests, and getting a table spontaneously always requires a bit of luck. Therefore, a word of advice: I would always recommend making a reservation by phone in advance, both for the restaurant's interior and for the terrace, which is furnished with imposing trees, numerous umbrellas, and comfortable tables.
We had also made a reservation for our visit and were seated in the indoor dining area. As I mentioned, I was already familiar with Romans and always feel immediately at ease there – whether on the terrace or inside. We entered and were given a cozy table in the right-hand section – somewhat separated from the main dining room with its dominant bar and numerous pre-set tables. There are only five tables in this corner of the restaurant, so we enjoyed a peaceful atmosphere. Both this small "room" and the entire restaurant feature a beautifully patterned white and brown textured wallpaper. This contributes to the cozy ambiance of the restaurant, which is furnished with dark furniture and parquet flooring. But don't imagine an old-fashioned, dusty Italian restaurant. Not at all. All the tables are elegantly set, the inviting bar offers five additional seats, and the lighting is soft, the decor subtle, the service exceptionally professional, and the overall atmosphere is very modern and chic.
We were seated and the menus were brought to us. We were also shown the chalkboard on the wall, which listed additional dishes such as fresh fish and delicious appetizers. Since I had been in a bit of a hurry, I hadn't managed to look at the menu online beforehand, so it took me a while to decide. Of course, Romans offers everything you would expect from a good Italian restaurant, but also much, much more. For example, there was a sesame-crusted tuna steak on fennel with pomegranate vinaigrette (€14.60), which I chose as my starter. My companion opted for the grilled lamb fillet on a bed of artichokes (€13.80). Both were excellent. I could have eaten tons of tuna alone. Absolutely delicious, tender, and flavorful. Before that, we were served warm breadsticks with thyme – cut into strips. Very tasty, especially since it was still warm and came straight from the oven to our table. We had water and wine to drink. More precisely, an Aulente | San Patrignano | 2014. Here's a little background: Romans offers wines – both by the glass and by the bottle – that are produced in Italy by former drug addicts and shipped to Germany. The proceeds from these wines support the organization, so you can do good while enjoying your wine. The friendly waiter mentioned this to us when we were choosing a wine, so I asked him about it in more detail.
After we finished our appetizers, we were both served a cold melon soup with almonds (€6.70) as an intermediate course. I personally love cold soup, but I know many people who have a problem with it – my companion, for example. But even my companion found the melon soup delicious, and my plan to snag a second helping didn't pan out. 🙂 I thought the soup had a slight – very pleasant – spiciness, and the melon flavor harmonized perfectly with the almonds. For the next course, we were served spaghetti agio olio in a bed of Parmesan cheese. Also incredibly delicious. Admittedly not ideal for a first date – unless you both order it 😉 – but truly delicious. Unfortunately, I can't say anything more about it if you think "incredibly delicious" is a bit of a cliché. You can really taste the difference between "just throwing some spaghetti with oil and garlic in a pot" and "prepared by a top Italian restaurant." Truly excellent and, despite the garlic breath, highly recommended. (Available in larger quantities as a main course on the pasta menu for €8.50).
I'm almost ashamed to admit it, but we had a total of five courses – so let's continue. 😉 My fourth course was swordfish tagliata "alla pizzaiola" on baby kohlrabi and carrots (€22.60), and my companion had a super juicy piece of beef fillet with vegetables and potatoes. Well... what can I say? A dream! Everything was simply delicious. My swordfish was exquisite, tender, and soft, and if you're ever here, I definitely recommend ordering fish. Of course, the fifth course was dessert, and here too, we chose two different options. I opted for a homemade chocolate-coconut cream. My companion chose a raspberry mousse on yogurt cream (€7.20 each). When we finally put down our cutlery after five courses, I was completely satisfied and, of course, stuffed. Everything tasted – without exaggeration – absolutely perfect, and there wasn't a single thing to complain about. If you're not quite as greedy as I am, you can have the Romans team put together a four-course surprise menu for you. Not knowing what you'll be served is always a bit risky, but since we didn't have any bad experiences with five courses, you certainly won't go wrong with this option at Romans.
The service in the restaurant is also excellent. Very competent and friendly. With each course, we received a detailed explanation of what we were eating, and we even had a brief chat with the cheerful waiters. Overall, there was absolutely nothing to complain about at Romans, from the service and ambiance to, of course, the food. Incidentally, the second wine (a Montepirolo | San Patrignano | 2010), which we received by the glass with the swordfish and beef fillet, was also from the aforementioned wine list and I enjoyed it, even though I'm not usually a red wine drinker. When we left the restaurant, we all agreed that Romans is one of those Italian restaurants in Munich where you're happy to come, stay, and leave satisfied.
All in all, I have no complaints. As mentioned, you should definitely make a reservation and ideally try everything I ate. 😉 Whether in the restaurant area or on the outdoor terrace – it's a wonderful and cozy place to sit with friends, family, colleagues, and so on at Romans – thumbs up!
