The Victorian House at the Viktualienmarkt is iconic and, for anyone with an affinity for English cuisine, practically a new living room. 🙂 The Victorian House is a restaurant specializing in English cuisine and known for its incredible variety of teas. Opened in 2001, it has since become one of those places you go for when you're looking for stunning interiors with precious antiques, a sumptuous ambiance, and authentic English food – something truly special.
So, I recently went there for breakfast with my companion on a rather spontaneous occasion. We called ahead and were assured that a table would be held for us until our arrival. When we came in, there were plenty of free tables, and a friendly young waitress seated us in the back of the large restaurant. The Victorian House is immediately captivating: with its small bar—stocked with numerous fresh cakes—its many sumptuous paintings, yellow walls, high stucco ceilings, heavy floral curtains, original oil paintings in imposing frames, hand-embroidered tapestry cushions on the banquettes, dark furniture, terracotta floors, and countless details that make you feel as if you've stepped back in time to England's past. We didn't particularly like the back area—a somewhat secluded room—as it was rather dark and smelled strongly of the kitchen. However, we were immediately offered a seat in the front area when we asked. Up front – on the long, greenish bench right by the windows with their enormous Chinese flower vases – we much preferred the space. Daylight streamed through the windows, creating a bright and welcoming atmosphere. It quickly felt like a cozy, elegant living room. I felt comfortable, especially because the service was prompt and courteous, and everything was just right. Take a look at the photos I took to see the ambiance, and you'll quickly understand why it's so inviting. Although the tables were relatively close together, we never felt cramped or overheard. For example, our breakfast wouldn't fit on one table, so the friendly waiter immediately pulled us over to the next one.
After studying the enormous A3 menus, reading through the numerous different breakfast options, and finally making our decisions, we ordered from the always attentive yet discreet staff. We opted for two different breakfasts. After some deliberation, I chose the "Knightsbridge" for €9, consisting of three scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and diced tomatoes, accompanied by a bread basket and butter. My companion chose the "Chelsea" for €13.40, which included a bowl of fruit salad, a glass of fresh orange juice (0.1l), a freshly baked croissant, a selection of breakfast rolls, jam, honey, Nutella, butter, and international cheeses and cold cuts. We also ordered a simple "plain" omelette for my companion (€4.90). This could have been made with alternatives such as bacon, onions, mushrooms, or potatoes with bacon. With smoked salmon, it would have cost €8.20. For drinks, I chose a Diet Coke (€2.90), and my companion had a cappuccino (€2.80). While tea is certainly a must at "The Victorian House" restaurant, as the selection is unbeatable, with numerous varieties just waiting to be sampled, I was in the mood for something cold. One negative point is that the juice served, advertised on the menu as "fresh orange juice," was definitely from a carton or bottle. Not a huge deal, as the breakfast was reasonably priced, but still not what one would expect. The bread basket was very generous, and the numerous small, soft rolls were more than enough – in fact, there was plenty left over. The croissant was delicate and freshly baked.
For those in a hurry, the teas are also available to go and are distinguished by the fact that they are brewed in a strainer, not in typical tea bags, allowing the flavor to infuse into the water. Besides breakfast, the Victorian House offers a variety of delicious main courses (from 12 pm), such as risotto with peas, Gorgonzola, peanuts, etc. for €11.80; classic English fish and chips for €15.80; steak and ale pie for €16.50; pork tenderloin medallions; and a sandwich with fried bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, mayonnaise, and chips for €12.80. Appetizers include carrot and ginger soup, smoked salmon with potato rösti and herb cream, wild herb salad, and Caesar salad, priced between €6 and €11.90.
The opening hours of Victorian House are a bit complicated. It's best to check them directly. here In fact, you can only reserve a table until 11:30 am on weekends and public holidays. The restaurant normally serves breakfast (until 2 pm), lunch (Monday to Friday business lunch (11:30 am – 3 pm) for an average of €7, which is perfectly reasonable for this location), traditional afternoon tea with Cornish clotted cream, and dinner daily from 9:30 am to 9:00 pm. Card payments are accepted. Parking is rather difficult, as the restaurant is located directly at the Viktualienmarkt – almost directly opposite the... Master's home. The best way to reach the restaurant by public transport is via the Isartor or Marienplatz (all S-Bahn lines).
If you're still looking for a venue for your celebration (30 people or more), such as a birthday or wedding, you can also rent the Victorian House. They offer bone china, fine linen, crystal, and silverware. The menu can, of course, be customized to your preferences. We paid €37 including tip. For two breakfasts, an additional omelet, and two drinks, that's quite reasonable for Munich's city center. I would definitely recommend a visit to the Victorian House. It's certainly not an everyday option, and the breakfasts are rather simple – for example, there was nothing on our breakfast menu that you couldn't buy at a regular supermarket for breakfast at home – but it's still recommendable and very cozy with excellent service and, above all, a unique ambiance. In the evening, the tables are set with white linens, further enhancing the English flair. Reservations are essential if you want to visit the Victorian House – no matter the time. I strongly advise you to do so, primarily because of the atmosphere.
I'll be back: Generally, yes. The atmosphere is great. The breakfast is simple but delicious. If you enjoy dining in an English setting, this is the place for you.
