Viehhof cinema | Viehhof Cinema Open Air Culture Festival 2017: From the June 1st to August 20th, 2017 The Viehhof Open-Air Cinema Culture Festival opens its gates for the seventh time. Once again, a wonderful summer oasis will be created right in the heart of Munich's beautiful city center, featuring a night beer garden, open-air cinema, art house films in a circus tent, live music, and an art exhibition. A selection of films, bands, and readings will be presented. Of course, refreshments will also be available, including a variety of culinary delights, delicacies, and fine wines.

Viehhof Cinema: What can you expect?

Before we get to the food, let's take a look at the film and cultural program. 😉 As a festival guest, you can expect to see the best films of the last six months, shown on the large open-air cinema screen. Different genres are shown in the cinema tent each day of the week. Mondays are for independent cinema, Tuesdays for documentaries, Wednesdays for biographies, Thursdays for readings and lectures, and on Sundays – what else? – Tatort (a popular German crime drama). 🙂 The stage belonging to the beer garden also provides a variety of live music, and until 1:00 a.m. you can sit together in the night beer garden, enjoying food, drinks, and dancing. Those coming with children can look forward to a children's vegetable garden, a soccer field, a paddling pool, a large sandbox, and other family specials on the weekends.

Food and drink – exhibitors and offerings

The Viehhof Cinema's food offerings are once again a colorful and varied mix this year. For example, the "DONNERWIRT" in its Bavarian-style hut offers soups, stews, meat skewers, campfire bread, rosemary potatoes with tzatziki, as well as sliced pork with white cabbage, beef goulash with dumplings, dumpling or potato salad, and various breads (lard, Obatzda, chive), Leberkäse (Bavarian meatloaf), and warm rice pudding. Also present is "FALAFEL-TOBI," whose offerings are self-explanatory given his name: falafel sandwiches and mezze platters. For those with a sweet tooth, "MORITZ'CRÊPES" will be serving both sweet and savory crêpes and Florentines, along with coffee. I'll definitely stop by "EDI & MAX" sometime and get a grilled fish on a stick (check beforehand when they're available, as it's only on select days!) or grab some frozen yogurt with different toppings. Of course, I might also enjoy a glass of wine or a cocktail. So, grab some delicious cocktails in various flavors at "COCKTAIL MAXI" or a glass of "FRANKENWEIN" (GWF, DIVINO, Winzer Sommerach) at the Franconian wine bar.

In the erected beer tent, Langnese ice cream will once again be available alongside drinks this year. Conveniently, Bavarian classics like (giant) pretzels and cheese (bacon) sticks can be purchased directly at the beer garden entrance, while snacks that are simply essential for watching a film are offered at the cinema entrance, and the aroma of freshly popped popcorn fills the air.

The beginning and the end of an era

The Viehhof cinema opens its doors at 6:00 PM on June 1st. The first film shown will be "This is Atomic Love".(Here (You can find more information about this here). Fittingly, the opening will be accompanied by a concert organized by PULS ("Zur Freiheit") in the night beer garden (open until 1:00 AM), and everyone will raise a glass to the opening together. There will be plenty on offer, including a performance by the band Elektrik Kezy Mezy with a mix of garage rock, punk, and Northern rock.

August 20th is not only the last day of this year's Viehhof Cinema, but unfortunately also marks the end of a seven-year era: For the very last time in the history of the slaughterhouse district, the Viehhof cinema screen will be illuminated. The period of temporary use of the old cattle hall site is drawing to a close, and construction of the Volkstheater (People's Theater) is about to begin. The Viehhof Cinema Open-Air Culture Festival, in cooperation with the City of Munich, will find a new location to continue providing us with a diverse mix of the best film highlights, live music, culinary delights, and cultural events next year.
