„"Enjoy your meal!" – A visit to the traditional restaurant "Zum Franziskaner" || I recently told you about the restaurant "Zum Franziskaner". You learned what makes this traditional restaurant in Munich's city center so special, how wonderful it is to linger, celebrate and enjoy yourself in the various rooms and halls, and I even took a first look at the menu.
Now, in this second part, things get serious! 😉 Because in the meantime, I've been there to test the restaurant and sampled the highlights – including some vegetarian options – from the menu. Together with my companion, I sat in the Fuchsen-Stube at "Zum Franziskaner," watched the lively activity on Residenzstrasse and Perusastrasse, and enjoyed excellent, high-quality food.
The menu of the restaurant „Zum Franziskaner“
During our recent visit, we were able to sit in the cozy "Foxes" room. This is the room you can see from the outside when strolling along Residenzstrasse and into Perusastrasse. Conversely, you're right in the heart of the action here, yet still pleasantly quiet and in a cozy Bavarian atmosphere. Personally, I find the "Foxes" – besides the Hofgarten – to be one of the most beautiful rooms in the "Zum Franziskaner" restaurant, and it's a wonderful place to relax and enjoy yourself.Reread the first article and familiarize yourself with all the rooms..)
Immediately after arriving and being seated – we were shown to our reserved table – a very friendly member of staff (thank you again!) handed us the menus. Even before we had chosen our food, our drink orders were noted, and we didn't have to wait long before our "Franziskaner Magendratzerl," which we had both ordered, arrived at our table. A perfect start with homemade Obatzda (Bavarian cheese spread), radish cream cheese, churned butter, and a freshly baked pretzel. Delicious! My companion had a portion of lard in her dish instead of butter, and I helped myself to some.
Alternatively, for a starter, there are two pieces of herring fillets prepared "housewife style," a creative "Vitello Bavaria" with veal rump and radish vinaigrette, a "Beetroot Carpaccio," and a Franziskaner tartare. We were able to sample the latter as part of a small "greeting from the kitchen," topped with layered prawns and a bread curl. So, a little something extra! My first tip: Don't skip the appetizer and treat yourself right at the start with a tartare and/or – a bit more classic – a stomach tart.
My companion briefly considered adding a soup as a starter – they offer Bavarian liver dumpling soup, pancake soup, and semolina dumpling soup – but then decided against it. Simply because they had already taken a look at the menu and the „"Franciscan Classics"“ The menu was thrown down, and the decision fell on the "crispy roasted suckling pig cut from the rib, with bacon and cabbage salad and two grated potato dumplings" – we needed room for that ;-). We chose the suckling pig on a previous recommendation, as it was supposed to be particularly good – and yes, we weren't disappointed. Beautifully tender and with such a crispy crackling that a few other guests in the same room turned their heads when we bit into it. 😉 Combined with the gravy served in the sauceboat, it was simply a truly delicious and traditional Bavarian delicacy.
True to the concept of "classics," the menu is further complemented by dishes such as "Oven-fresh roast suckling pig with crackling," "Crispy half pork knuckle," "Bavarian Ox Burger" or "Pulled Pork Burger," "Viennese veal schnitzel," "Bavarian free-range duck," and "Boiled ox brisket." Sausage lovers should order the equally popular Franziskaner white sausages, or alternatively, fine veal bratwurst, crisp grilled sausages, or (optionally) a properly spicy currywurst.
I'll admit it straight away: I left the classics to my companion for the time being and instead kept my eyes on... „"Our specialty"“ Hanging on the map: probably – according to innkeeper Mathias Reinbold – „"best Leberkäs'" in the city. The menu reveals that this meatloaf is well-known far beyond the region's borders and is prepared fresh daily according to their own family recipe. It's offered in 100, 150, and 200-gram pieces, optionally accompanied by lukewarm potato salad and, if desired, fried egg(s). Indeed, my piece of Leberkäse was really good and tasted delicious. It's always important to me that it has a strong, not overly pronounced bacon, pork, or beef flavor, and that it has a particularly fine texture. In short: anyone who likes Leberkäse will certainly enjoy the one from the "Zum Franziskaner" restaurant as much as I did. At this point, I'd like to reiterate that... Even those who prefer to eat Leberkäse to go will get their money's worth., because the Franciscan has a Street vending, where there are daily changing specials and also freshly made Leberkässemmel – pretzel or normal – to take away.
Those who prefer to enjoy meat in a "lighter" form will find what they're looking for in the Category „Vital Cuisine“ He finds what he's looking for and orders naturally fried veal schnitzel with steamed market vegetables or the fish option in the form of char fillet, grilled or cooked in foil, with market vegetables and parsley potatoes.
Meatless dining at the "Zum Franziskaner"„
Are you vegetarian or vegan and wondering if you can still find something on the menu? – Understandable. Rest assured: there's a separate section for vegetarians and vegans. Category („Vegetarian and Vegan“) In addition to the vegetarian beetroot carpaccio, you will also be offered delicate cheese spaetzle with mountain cheese; stir-fried vegetables with brown rice and coconut curry sauce; and handmade beetroot ravioli. The menu also includes... „Vitamins and Co.“ A selection of different salads – as a side dish or as a main course. A delicious Caesar salad with pretzel croutons, Parmesan shavings, and your choice of juicy turkey and bacon also awaits the fitness enthusiasts and salad lovers among you.
I had the opportunity to glance at the vegetarian dish at the next table. „"Superfood Bowl"“ I almost threw it up and would have loved to try it too – if my fragrant Leberkäse hadn't already been waiting for me. It looks good, doesn't it? (Photo right) But hey, I'll just treat myself to the bowl with burrata, blackberry dressing, avocado, goji berries, olives, and almond slivers on my next visit to the "Zum Franziskaner" restaurant.
Sweets are always a good idea, right?
It's no secret among connoisseurs these days: "Sugar has a stomach of its own!", right? 😉 So my companion and I even had a little room left for a sweet finish, because after all, the last category on the menu had to be tried. ("Desserts") It should be checked out, right? Even though the strawberry tiramisu, or even the delicate apple strudel with vanilla sauce, sounded so tempting, I simply couldn't resist reading about my favorite desserts. Now you know what's going on, right? – Exactly! There was a "Freshly baked Kaiserschmarrn – caramelized and served in a baking dish with raisins and almonds, as well as plum compote or applesauce." Mmmmmm!
The portion is very generous and, combined with the plum compote, a real highlight, almost a "competitor" for Leberkäse (Bavarian meatloaf). 😉 Beautifully fluffy, definitely freshly made, sprinkled with powdered sugar, and of course pulled (not cut), it's brought to your table and you can happily dig in – simply fantastic! When it comes to Kaiserschmarrn, nobody can beat me, so... My next tip: Grab a "fellow diner" – the Kaiserschmarrn is available for two or more people – and try it too!
One more note regarding the menu: Soon there will be a revised and new menu for us guests. Don't worry, the classics and highlights will of course remain; we'll just be taking even more into account for vegetarians. Great, right?
Final conclusion regarding the restaurant „Zum Franziskaner“
Even though sharing my impressions with you has naturally given me a huge craving for all those delicious treats and a rumbling stomach, I can only recommend that you stop by. You know: for me, quality and regionality are paramount, and only then comes the enjoyment.
In my opinion, everything about the "Zum Franziskaner" restaurant is perfect. The service is warm and attentive, the menu is varied, and they cater to everyone. The individual dishes were also excellent. The "menu" I enjoyed was definitely of very good quality, and you can immediately taste that attention is paid to the right and important things in the kitchen.
I will definitely come back to the Franziskaner and the next Leberkäs-Semmel to go, the next lunch table as well as dinner table with my loved ones is certain.
So, one last tip for you: Next time you're looking for really good, high-quality food – including vegetarian and vegan options – be sure to stop by "Zum Franziskaner"! ...and leave some space for the Kaiserschmarrn. 🙂
