The book cover
The Bread Exchange | Book Review Today I'm introducing you to a book that captivated me from the very first page and after the first two lines of the foreword. "Tell me a story that moves me. Show me something I've never seen. Teach me something I don't know. Bring me something you've made that you're proud of. Share with me. And I will share my bread with you." – This is how the 240-page book begins, a story about traveling with a sourdough starter and bartering. It includes stories and recipes and shows, in a fascinating way, just how vast and complex the world of bread truly is.
The Bread Exchange – Content and Message
After reading the first sentence of the foreword, "Like most good ideas, this one also arose from a mixture of frustration and dissatisfaction…," I was completely hooked. 🙂 The book "The Bread Exchange" by Malin Elmlid tells the story of the world's most traveled sourdough starter. It's narrated by baker and The Bread Exchange founder Malin Elmlid, who exchanges her homemade bread for family recipes, experiences, and objects that are meaningful to the recipient. With captivating stories and a relaxed, easy-to-read style, the book takes the reader on a journey from Antwerp to Kabul, from Warsaw to New York, on horseback through the Sinai Peninsula, and from Stockholm to Berlin. It recounts a wide range of experiences, from secret food markets in California to, of course, the history of bread baking. This exciting book is also packed with over 50 recipes that the traveling author collected along the way.

Stories and information in the book
The Bread Exchange is sure to delight you, especially if you enjoy traveling, baking, and discovering new stories. Unlike a typical baking or cookbook, The Bread Exchange combines travel, bread, recipes, and culture in an interesting and informative way. For example, you'll find instructions for an original Bread Exchange sourdough starter made from water, flour, and salt, and gain new perspectives, impressions, and insights into the concepts of sharing and exchanging. This isn't "just" about baking bread and the numerous possible recipes; it's about so much more. It's about the true value of sharing and exchanging—when money isn't involved—and reminds you, the reader, of the importance of sharing.

numerous photographs throughout the book
Read The Bread Exchange about the amazing story of the world's most traveled sourdough starter, about the author Malin Elmlid's passion for bread baking, which has been a constant companion since 2007, and enrich your life—besides delicious bread and fantastic recipes—with deeper insights into the world of sharing. Always present in the book: the sourdough starter. In my opinion, this extraordinary book is an absolute must-read. You don't (yet) have to be a huge bread fan or a baking expert to read and be captivated. On the contrary. The book opens new doors and presents the world of bread, travel, sharing, and baking in a fresh and unique way. I won't reveal any more.

Stories and recipes with large pictures
The book The Bread Exchange has been available in most bookstores or online since the end of February. Amazon (contains advertising links) Buy it now! This book is being published exclusively in German for the first time. You can expect numerous color photographs, both in the stories and with each recipe. I myself couldn't put the book down – even though it's essentially a baking and recipe book. It's also ideal if you need a break from baking or want to watch the baking process from the oven: just read a story or two. It's really enjoyable! The rather thick book is bound in hardcover and, in my opinion, is the perfect gift for travel, bread, and baking enthusiasts. The recipes are written in an easy-to-understand way and are also suitable for beginners. I was completely won over by The Bread Exchange.
Have fun with it.
