Weinviertel_DAC_4C_<40mmWirtshaus am Bavariapark | Weinviertel in your neighborhood | Restaurant number 9 of 14 – Immediately after the weekend, my testing series for the "Weinviertel in Your Neighborhood" campaign continued. Restaurant number 9 took me to the Bavarian inn at Bavariapark, run by Philip and Sabine Sedgwick. Mr. Sedgwick was incredibly kind and attentive throughout my entire visit, answering all my questions and keeping me company while I tasted and ate Weinviertel wines. Now I'd like to tell you about it. (Did you miss the previous articles or want to read them again? – No problem! You can find them here.) Blue Buck, Halali, essence, Freisinger Hof, Restaurant Bavarian National Museum (bnm), Österia, Landersdorfer and Innerhofer, Restaurant Ebert. You can find more information about the entire campaign on the Campaign website himself.

The inn at Bavariapark

Since 2007, the Wirtshaus am Bavariapark has been located at Theresienhöhe 15. A traditional inn specializing in Bavarian cuisine. That might not sound particularly special at first. But as is so often the case in life – as soon as you delve a little deeper into things, people, and circumstances, take a closer look, and ask questions, you see not only the big picture but also the many small details that, in the case of the Wirtshaus am Bavariapark, make it so special and certainly unique. During my visit, I had the opportunity to have an in-depth conversation with the owner, Philip Sedgwick, experience his excellent table service, sample a delicious dish from his menu, and, most importantly, taste the Weinviertel wine "Falko," a 2015 Muscatel cuvée (from the Dürnberg winery) – more on that later. A thoroughly recommendable inn – not only for the food but also for the warmth and friendliness of the entire team.

The standard menu offers snacks, hot and cold appetizers, various soups, tarte flambée, Bavarian classics and sausages, fish and meat specialties, and of course, numerous Bavarian desserts. There is also a weekly changing lunch menu, available weekdays between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm, featuring two different dishes (one with meat, one vegetarian) for €7 each (e.g., Thai red curry, braised vegetarian savoy cabbage roll, chicken fricassee, paella with prawns, etc.). The business lunch menu for €11.50 consists of a soup or appetizer of the day, a main course, and an espresso or coffee. A separate children's menu is available.

The inn's breakfast menu is concise and well-rounded. Small breakfast options start at €4.70, and extras are available from €0.70 (e.g., the "Cheese Board" breakfast for €12.80 with various cheeses, or the "Good Morning Britain" breakfast with fried eggs, sausages, and bacon (€9.10)). The innkeeper is particularly enthusiastic about the "English Muffins," which come in three different varieties for €4.90 each. It's best to try the breakfast on a weekend.

While Augustiner beer is the usual beverage of choice, the Weinviertel wine is also available until the end of June – more on that later. Occasionally, they even offer beer from Augustiner's original 30-liter wooden barrel. In addition to the Weinviertel wine from Austria, the wine list typically features eight open wines (four white, three red, and one rosé) from various European regions. The Wirthaus am Bavariapark's emphasis on origin and quality is evident not only in the Weinviertel wine and other international selections, but also in every dish on the menu and the quality of its individual ingredients. The origin of the products is very important to the owners. The standard menu includes a comprehensive list of all suppliers, providing detailed information on everything from cakes and pastries to meats from Metzger Bauch and fish from Frischeparadies, etc.

Selection and evaluation of wine and food
My visit focused on the Muscatel Cuvée. Of course, I also wanted to explore the various dishes and the cuisine of the inn. (Recommendations in the next paragraph). Before we get to the food choices, here's some information about the Muscatel Cuvée. It's characterized by a fresh, fragrant note and is a blend of Welschriesling, Muscatel, and a touch of Sauvignon Blanc. I like fruity and slightly sweet wines – for me, the ideal wine to pair with fish dishes and on sunny days. It also offers fruity aromas and notes of lilac and elderflower, along with a pleasant acidity and a smooth, easy-drinking character. I admit – one glass wasn't enough for me, and I happily asked for refills. The Cuvée is perfect as an aperitif, but also pairs well with vegetable appetizers, fish soup, or an asparagus dish (currently still available in Munich). From a culinary perspective, the Dürnberg winery even recommends pairing their wine with Pizza Napoletana, Backhendl salad, Rahmschnitzel (a creamed schnitzel), or fish. The latter was also the dish that most appealed to me on the menu during my visit to the Wirtshaus am Bavariapark.

So I opted for the fjord salmon trout "Müllerin." A fillet pan-fried in brown butter with parsley, spinach, Grenaille potatoes, and lemon (for €17.40). Beforehand, I had a side salad with herb vinaigrette that perfectly complemented the wine (for €3.50). The fish was cooked to perfection, the skin—which I like to eat depending on the fish and how it's prepared—was beautifully crispy, and combined with the delicate potatoes and spinach, it was a true culinary delight. Anyone who loves fish as much as I do should definitely find the right dish here.

Recommendation of the inn at Bavariapark
Outside of the "Weinviertel in Your Neighborhood" campaign, Mr. Sedgwick highly recommends to his guests the homemade beef roulades from the top round with glazed carrots and mashed potatoes (€15.50) or the Viennese schnitzel made from Bavarian veal with roasted Grenaille potatoes, cranberries, and a small salad (€19.20). Those who prefer a meatless option should order the Käsespätzle (cheese spaetzle) with homemade fried onions. I saw a gentleman at the next table enjoying them and could tell from several meters away that the fried onions were homemade – they were so beautifully crisp and golden, shining in the sun. Also not to be overlooked, according to Mr. Sedgwick, are the spare ribs with homemade spicy Jack Daniel's chipotle chili sauce, sour cream dip, bacon slaw, and potato dippers – cold-smoked and marinated by the Magnus Bauch butcher shop.

With the Weinviertel wine, specifically the Muscatel Cuvée (from the Dürnberg winery), the innkeeper highly recommends a small, fresh salad as a starter, along with the fish from the menu, which is exactly what I ordered. While there are currently two fish dishes on the standard menu, the pan-fried pike-perch fillet with horseradish foam probably wouldn't pair as well with the Cuvée. So, next time you're in town, order a glass of "Falko" Muscatel Cuvée with the fjord salmon trout. And if you're in the mood for something truly unique to finish, order the "experience ice cream" for dessert (but not alone!). I know what it is, but I won't tell you any more just yet. 😉

Hard facts

The Wirtshaus am Bavariapark offers seating for approximately 400 people in three separate rooms, as well as an additional bar area. The beer garden can accommodate another 700 guests. The restaurant and beer garden are regularly open from 11:00 AM to midnight. Hot food is served until 10:00 PM. Parking is available in a small lot at the restaurant (for approximately 20 cars). Alternatively, you can park along the street or a little further ahead in the parking lots of the Alte Kongresshalle (Old Congress Hall). The Wirtshaus is easily accessible by public transport via subway lines 4 and 5 (Schwanthalerhöhe station). Breakfast is served every Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. All major debit and credit cards are accepted. The restaurant can also be rented in sections. There's also the adjoining "Congress Bar" with space for approximately 120-150 people. It's ideal for celebrations and parties. Regular events with live bands take place there, and starting in July, they'll also be serving various mini-tapas at the bar. Pretzels on the tables cost €1.20 each, and giant pretzels in the Augustiner beer garden are €6.80. You're welcome to bring your own food.

The „Falko“ – Muscat Cuvée

This wine from the Weinviertel region is available at the inn at Bavariapark.

In addition to the numerous other open wines, the inn at Bavariapark also offers the following in June: 2015 Muscatel Cuvée „Falko“ from the Dürnberg winery available. The owner will keep the wine on the restaurant's menu even after the "Weinviertel in Your Neighborhood" campaign has ended.

Conclusion: Today I'd like to review the wine, the restaurant, and the overall experience separately. The dry wine, or more precisely, the cuvée, was very enjoyable with its intensely fruity notes. Those who don't usually like fruity wines will likely be skeptical of this cuvée. However, in recent days I've been increasingly exposed to wines from the Dürnberg winery in the northeastern Weinviertel region and have grown to appreciate them more and more each time. The Muscatel cuvée "Falko" is a young and wonderfully fresh and fruity variety that, in my opinion, paired perfectly with the fish I was served, and I will certainly order it again as soon as I see it on the menu. I can also highly recommend the restaurant itself. It has a cozy atmosphere, a great beer garden, super friendly service, and—not to be overlooked—fantastic Bavarian cuisine with an extensive and original menu. Stop by next time you're in the city center. It's worth it! And even if you don't have the chance to speak with Philip Sedgwick as much as I did during my visit – in five different languages, if you like – I'm sure you'll quickly notice the excellent and pleasant atmosphere among the entire team, including the owner, which permeates the whole establishment. Fantastic!
