HeimWerk Glockenbachviertel – Slowfood, Schnitzel, Salads and more. When I reported on the opening of the new HeimWerk in Schwabing in December 2016, I quickly became a regular visitor. Now, a good year later, there's more reason to celebrate. The second HeimWerk, HeimWerk Glockenbachviertel, has opened its doors, and since mid-January 2018, you can "GeHeimWerkt" (a play on words combining "HeimWerk" and "GeHeimWerk," meaning "homework") in the Glockenbachviertel district, in addition to Schwabing. The familiar HeimWerk charm is immediately apparent upon entering, yet the second location exudes its own unique atmosphere and lifestyle. I took a look around and went there to test it out for you.

This is what it looks like in the HeimWerk Glockenbachviertel.

The new HeimWerk Glockenbachviertel

The new HeimWerk Glockenbachviertel is not intended as a "copy," but rather as an extension of the original Schwabing location. Of course, as a guest, you'll recognize it as a new HeimWerk from numerous small details, the identical menu, and the restaurant's philosophy – more on that in a moment – but much has been intentionally new, expanded, and added. HeimWerk is not just a restaurant and a place to feel good, but also a brand that stands for healthy, regional cuisine. Slow food, freshly prepared for you, with ingredients that are 1001% natural and sourced exclusively from suppliers who place a high value on sustainability, quality, and transparency in their production. All HeimWerk partners are also listed in the Glockenbachviertel, and you can find information about the origin of your food on a chalkboard. The HeimWerk principles are therefore clearly defined in the new opening: "A small amount of top quality," "Regionality," "Fair wages – fair prices," "100% naturalness," and "100% freshness." Thumbs up for that!

What's also remained the same: Payment is made upon leaving HeimWerk at the central cash register – a brand new card wrapped in felt – onto which your dishes are recorded. So, unlike usual, you don't have to wait at your table for someone to come and collect payment; you can get up and pay at the exit immediately after eating and drinking. All dishes are also available for takeaway.

The ambience in the new HeimWerk

As mentioned, HeimWerk Glockenbachviertel is different, yet still retains a distinctive design reminiscent of HeimWerk Schwabing. The architecture of the space alone – with its central staircase leading to the upper floor and additional seating – creates a distinct atmosphere. The coordinated furniture, sophisticated lamps and tables – custom-made for HeimWerk Glockenbachviertel – and numerous other details contribute to a comfortable dining experience and that feeling I find so appealing when eating out. A variety of materials, finishes, and colors are used alongside wood. The logo, the familiar HeimWerk gnome, is emblazoned in striking red on the pitchers filled with cutlery, reappears as designer lamps on the walls and partially above the tables, and is also used as a stylishly framed element on the substantial, light-colored wooden tables. Red is also a recurring motif in the bar stools placed at the chic bar. Clean, smooth surfaces, brushed steel, polished screed, plenty of wood, subtle lighting, fresh flowers by the cake counter (be sure to leave space for them!), and an all-around harmonious ambiance create the perfect HeimWerk atmosphere. It's hard to say which of the two shops you'd feel more comfortable in. Both have their own unique and distinct charm.

The menu

The menu is identical to that of HeimWerk Schwabing and is divided into various categories. At HeimWerk Glockenbachviertel, every dish can also be ordered as a "snack" or a "meal"—meaning for a light snack or a full meal. The categories remain the same: "Main Courses," "Side Dishes," "Sweets" (try the Kaiserschmarrn and "Himbi"!), and "Breakfast." New to the menu is the subdivision of main courses into "Schnitzel," "...Five Friends" (e.g., Backhendl, Käsespätzle), and "Salad Meal" (in various combinations).

The schnitzel selection has been significantly expanded, as it's considered – alongside the delicious fried chicken, the delicate spinach dumplings, and the sweet Kaiserschmarrn for dessert – a bit of a flagship dish for HeimWerke. The schnitzel menu now offers eight varieties – between €4.30 and €12.30 – including zucchini schnitzel (very tasty!), vegetable and potato schnitzel, and of course classics like veal schnitzel, Munich schnitzel, and Bavarian cordon bleu. (Have you ever tried a nut schnitzel?...). With your schnitzel or other chosen dish, you can then select your preferred side dish (between €3.50 and €3.90 | potato salad, small mixed salad, fried potatoes, hot vegetables, or fries).

Zucchini schnitzel – healthy and fresh

In addition to the regular menu, there are also two lunch specials offered Monday through Friday, available for 14 days as a "lunch special" for €7.90 each. During my visit, for example, one of these was sliced pork with potato pancakes, and the other was spinach dumpling hash with mixed salad. So you can easily get a satisfying meal for under €10. Also important: the menu's "specials," which change every two to three months and always feature new, seasonal dishes. Currently, these include "wild herb fries" for €4.30, "beetroot soup" for €4.30 (snack size) or €7.90 (meal size), and "spinach pancakes with vegetable filling" for €4.90 (snack size) or €8.60 (meal size).

Breakfast is also served on weekends (Saturday and Sunday/public holiday).here Learn more about breakfast at HeimWerk Schwabing. Between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM, you can choose your breakfast (between €2.50 and €6.90) from a small, select menu: Fresh orange juice, smoothies, homemade Bircher muesli, cheese platters, scrambled eggs in two styles with your choice of topping, mini pancakes, and more await you. And if you get hungry after the kitchen closes, you can order the newly introduced "Night Watch" until closing time – a snack platter with bread, meatballs, ham, cheese, pickle, and radishes (for €7.50).

„"Pink Noise" – refreshing rose lemonade

Selection and testing of the dishes

Since I heard that the new fried chicken from Ingolstadt (for €6.90 or €12.30) was supposed to be a huge hit at HeimWerk, along with the schnitzels, I decided to order it and chose the freshly made potato salad (€3.50) as a side dish. The "ham spaetzle with juniper-smoked ham in a light cheese sauce" (€4.60 or €8.30) with mixed greens and house dressing (€3.90) also looked tempting, as did the zucchini schnitzel (€4.50 or €8.30). To drink, I had a non-alcoholic rose petal lemonade ("Rosa Rauschen" for €6.90). It wasn't long before my hot and attractively presented meal arrived at my long wooden table on the small mezzanine in the basement.

I immediately fell in love with the ham spaetzle. Especially since I'm not a fan of overly rich meals, and the HeimWerk ham spaetzle, despite the cheese, aren't too heavy. The zucchini schnitzel with classic breading, which is also suitable for vegetarians, is another delicious and novelty. Fresh, light, simple, and creative. The incredibly tender fried chicken elicited several "Mmmmhs!" from me. Not only is the accompanying potato salad delicious and tastes "just like Mom's," but the chicken fillet is simply unbeatable in its softness and has a lovely crunchy coating. Unfortunately, I didn't have room for the Kaiserschmarrn during my visit (This is what he looks like…), but I did try one of the cakes that HeimWerk Glockenbachviertel gets delivered by Munich's "Café Fräulein." My plum crumble cake (for €3.60 per slice) was delicious. So be sure to leave room for sugar at the end! 😉 On my next visit, or rather, my first breakfast at HeimWerk Glockenbachviertel, I'll also try the smoked trout – you don't find that everywhere.

Beer chocolates and the new felt home improvement booking cards

New at HeimWerk Glockenbachviertel: Craft beer, Spritz, shop and more.

You'll have to come by and try it for yourselves anyway, but I still want to tell you about some of the new things. Besides the expanded menu, another new feature is that you can now take the HeimWerk gnome home with you. Either as a mug, like the ones used as cutlery holders in the restaurant, or in the form of T-shirts or hats. Keep an eye out when the staff serves your food; they'll be wearing these shirts (…and I'll be soon too… ;-)). Also brand new are the HeimWerk beer pralines, which you can also get at the counter – made with dark wheat beer, filled with cream, and, as I discovered yesterday on my own sofa, quite delicious.

Speaking of beer: Be sure to check out the drinks section for the extensive selection of different Spritz (seven different varieties starting at €6.50), cocktails, lemonades, and – very importantly – the newly introduced craft beer range: 0.33l bottles are available for between €3.90 and €6.90. On offer are "Crew Republic" craft beer, "Giesinger Lemondrop Triple," and "Giesinger Sternhagel." Cheers and enjoy!

Key facts and personal conclusion

Many new things are happening in the future, and there will certainly be a HeimWerk number 3. I can also reveal that a HeimWerk street food stand will soon open next to the HeimWerk Glockenbachviertel location, serving schnitzel sandwiches and fries. So stay tuned!.
