This is what it looks like at Simon Pure on Augustenstrasse.

Simon Pure – the varied salad in a bread pocket –  Do you know that feeling when you walk past a restaurant, café, or shop over and over again and every time you think, "I really have to go in there and eat there sometime"? That's pretty much how I felt about Simon Pure for a while. Simon Pure is a small, cozy shop on Augustenstraße, located between the main train station and Königsplatz, that offers salads served in a paper-thin yeast bread pocket. "Huh... a salad in bread?" – Yes, that's what it looks like. Simon Pure has managed to create a paper-thin bread pocket made of yeast dough and fill it with a variety of healthy salads, toppings, and sauces. Now, after its opening in January last year, I finally made it there for a leisurely lunch. Once again, I've learned: "Don't just plan it, do it!" because a visit to Simon Pure is definitely worth it.

Simon Pure: Concept and Idea

„"Salad with a twist" – that's the concept Simon Pure cleverly brings to life in its small store. A wafer-thin, round flatbread made from classic yeast dough (yeast, flour, water, salt) is filled with salad and your choice of healthy ingredients, then folded over. The result is a uniquely filled "POQET" – that's what Simon Pure calls these healthy and satisfying meals. To try it, simply queue at the counter (self-service) and choose – from the flyer or order board – either one of Simon Pure's nine pre-selected favorites or create your own custom POQET. For example, customers can choose between the POQET "The Shepherd" (with feta, egg, whole-wheat bread, mixed salad, cucumber, carrot, olive, seeds, chives & honey and mustard sauce), the "Yogi" (with hummus, mozzarella, whole-wheat bread, mixed salad, sprouts, cucumber, tomato, chives, parsley and Italian herb sauce), or the "Mexican" (with guacamole, chicken, whole-wheat bread, mixed salad, bell peppers, corn, seeds, chives and citrus pepper sauce). The selection is colorful and varied – there's something for everyone.

Free choice of filling or would you rather choose a "favorite"?

There are a total of 14 different toppings to choose from (hummus, guacamole, Emmental, tzatziki, Parmesan, feta, mozzarella, egg, goat cheese, tuna, shrimp, chicken, chili con carne, beef), 17 different salad greens, and 12 different sauces created exclusively for Simon Pure, resulting in an inexhaustible repertoire of customizable POQET variations. For the bread, or rather the bread pocket, you can choose between light dough or a slightly darker whole-wheat dough. Once you've made your selection, the bread is opened from the side and filled fresh from the oven. To give you a better idea: a Simon Pure yeast dough pocket weighs between 40 and 50 grams. This should give you a sense of just how paper-thin the dough is. This way, the focus of the flavor remains on the salad and the chosen toppings, with the bread only subtly noticeable. Crucially for enjoyment: POQETS contain no artificial flavorings, flavor enhancers, or preservatives. Only fresh and healthy ingredients go into these yeast bread pockets, which means pure freshness when you eat them.

Discover and taste POQETS

After placing my order with Simon Pure, I had a couple of minutes to spare and asked a few more questions. Simon Pure is the brainchild of founders Korbinian and Tobias. The two came up with the idea of creating filled bread bags (or a "slightly different sandwich salad") while traveling the world and sampling similar dishes in faraway lands. This sparked their idea to bring the fillable bread bag back to Munich and offer it there. They spent a long time perfecting the design and didn't stop until they arrived at the ideal product. The final result is POQETS, which you can now order from Simon Pure starting at €6.40.

The name, by the way, comes from Simon Pure, a hero in the 1718 play "A Bold Stroke for a Wife." In the play, he is initially robbed of his identity, but manages to stand up for himself and uncover his true identity. Over time, this led to the term "to be Simon-pure" becoming established in English as an expression for authentic quality, genuineness, purity, and unadulterated excellence—qualities that are perfectly transferable to the delicious POQETS. Simon Pure in Munich was born.

Order, pick up at the counter, take a seat and enjoy.

After a short wait, I was able to pick up my POQET. I ordered a slightly modified version of the "Mexican" dish, and indeed: at first glance, the plate, or rather the bread pocket, looks overflowing and loaded with food. "Can I even finish it?" was my first thought. But once you bite into it, you quickly realize that it's fresh, healthy, and also light on the stomach. The toppings (which, by the way, can be customized with each option) really shine, they don't skimp on quantity, and you feel like you have a good mix of salad, bread, and toppings in your mouth right up to the last third of the POQET. In the end, with my version, I mainly tasted the fresh salad and the last bits of bread (...because the salad is added to the bread pocket first when it's being filled...). Those who would prefer something warm on the day of their visit can also enjoy the delicious chili con carne (for 6.60 euros) or one of the changing soups made according to their own recipe (sometimes vegan, sometimes a cream soup or even a goulash soup).

For drinks, there's a wide selection of "Bio Zisch" beverages, as well as various smoothies (for €4.90), freshly squeezed juices (from €3.50), soft drinks, and hot beverages (from €1.90). The additional snack display case offers homemade snacks and salads, cookies, cakes and muffins, as well as chia pudding, yogurt with fruit, or rice pudding (from €2.45). Incidentally, Simon Pure caters to meat lovers, vegetarians, and vegans alike.

Simon Pure's success is twofold: firstly, its large customer base – once someone comes, they come back – and secondly, the satisfying feeling of fullness that follows. You're no longer hungry, yet you still feel energized. POQETS are filling without causing a feeling of bloating, partly because the bread flavor of the wafer-thin bread isn't overpowering, allowing the toppings and salad to take center stage and create a feeling of fullness.

Hard facts and personal opinion

Inside, Simon Pure offers seating for 30 people at cozy wooden tables. When the sun comes out, up to 12 guests can sit at the outdoor tables and enjoy their POQET. If you're in a hurry, simply grab your filled salad bag "to go," as the entire selection is available for takeaway. And if you're having a lazy day, you don't have to miss out on Simon Pure either; you can choose from Deliveroo's selection and have it delivered right to your door. Convenient, isn't it?

I was personally impressed by Simon Pure because their filled salad pockets taste authentic and contain only healthy, pure ingredients. The fact that they use regional suppliers also won me over even before the first bite. When I want a quick and satisfying meal without any fuss, Simon Pure will definitely be on my radar more often. The POQETS taste fantastic and don't get boring quickly, as there's so much room for experimentation. Personally, I think it would be even better if the salad and toppings were mixed together in a bowl before being packed into the bread pocket. That way, you really have a "mixed filling" right down to the last bite. Otherwise: thumbs up, especially for the price.
