Dean and David – Restaurant chain for fresh salads and more Dean & David is a chain in Munich and other German cities that sells delicious salads, soups, smoothies, snacks, sandwiches, and more. I'm a regular there, and I'm sure you're familiar with their healthy salad bar. I've eaten the Paris salad with grapes, walnuts, feta cheese, and other ingredients so often that I could probably make it in my sleep.
But no matter which salad you choose, you can order various extras for each type: shrimp, olives, feta cheese, mushrooms, etc. – all of which can, of course, be deselected or substituted. It usually comes with 2-3 small slices of dark whole-grain bread – which, in my opinion, isn't necessarily delivered or baked fresh daily.
All salads, wraps, and dishes (e.g., curries, soups, desserts, etc.) are available for takeout and can be pre-ordered by phone or, more recently, via app. A large salad (and I mean really large!) costs between €8 and €10, is truly filling, always tastes fresh, and is also visually appealing. Salads are, of course, considerably cheaper in Munich, but then again, I would never stand at home and make a salad with, for example, grapes, walnuts, feta cheese, or even chicken, etc.
There is no direct table service. You select your dishes from the large blackboards – where you'll also find a variety of options (yellow curry, red curry, lentil soup, smoothies, sandwiches, soups), order, and pay directly. Nothing is brought to your table. You take a voucher along with your cutlery to your table, and once your meal is finished, a vibration alerts you to collect it.
The wait time isn't particularly long, but during peak hours – depending on the branch's location – it can be up to 15 minutes. However, queuing can easily take longer. For example, I've waited 35 minutes at lunchtime on weekdays on Nymphenburger Straße. At the Stachus location on the mezzanine level, service is always quick, and the staff at the new branch near the main train station (formerly Pom Pom) are also efficient. Dean & David on Sebastiansplatz is very nice – especially for sitting outside. The shop in the 5 Höfe complex is quite small, lacks natural light, and seating is harder to find. In summer, however, the additional terrace is completely packed. The salads taste pretty much the same everywhere.
The various smoothies, chai tea, and fresh juices are also very good, a great alternative to a small snack, and quite filling. They're not exactly cheap, but they're fresh and come in a variety of flavors. Why not try them and let me know what you think?.
