The guild house in the Isarvorstadt district – cozy alpine feeling included

Guildhall: Austrian cuisine, stage, bowling, Pure alpine hut atmosphere, daily changing regional dishes – this and much more is what the cozy Isarvorstadt guild house has to offer. A Munich institution for 60 years, it has been run by renowned chef and restaurateur Heinz Wernitznig since the end of 2018, following extensive renovations, and is now a hotspot for a diverse stage program and delicious Austrian cuisine. I visited, sampled my way through the menu, looked around, and asked some questions.

Arrival and atmosphere in the guild house

For anyone who loves traditional Austrian cuisine as much as I do, a visit to the Zunfthaus is a must. After a six-week renovation, it reopened in November 2018 and has since become a popular spot for those who enjoy a convivial atmosphere, good conversation, delicious Austrian food, and simply relaxing. At the Zunfthaus, you'll find plenty of wood, ideally divided seating areas and cozy rooms, a prominent tiled stove, and a genuine mountain lodge feel. In short: as soon as you step inside, you'll quickly forget that you're not in a ski lodge in the mountains, but rather in the heart of Munich. Thoughtful details – fresh flowers on the tables, white tablecloths, subtle lighting, appropriate decorations, wood carvings, etc. – ensure you feel comfortable from the very first minute. The friendly staff is happy to assist you with finding a seat.

Divided into three rooms (main room, side room, and pine-paneled room) with a total of 18 tables and seating for 90 people, everyone can find their perfect spot here. What I also really appreciated from the start was the diverse mix of people during my visit to the guild house, creating a pleasant atmosphere both among the clientele and in the restaurant itself. The weekly menu, displayed in handwriting near the entrance and leaning against the enormous wooden barrel, immediately catches the eye. It reveals what's currently on offer in addition to the standard menu. What do you think? – For me, it instantly increases my appetite for good food when I see what I can order as soon as I walk in. So, let's go…

Cuisine, menu and culinary offerings

The standard menu is divided into "hearty delicacies" (Carinthian schnitzel, meatballs, South Tyrolean alpine rösti, etc.), "From the soup bowl," "An intermediate course" (farmer's sausage salad, grilled pork sausages, Allgäu cheese spaetzle, etc.), "Crisp, fresh treats" (salads), "There are always delicacies available" (Wiener schnitzel, cordon bleu, ribbon noodles, roast beef with onions, etc.), and "Something sweet to finish" (Kaiserschmarrn, apricot pancakes). No matter what you're in the mood for, you'll find it on the clearly laid-out menu. If you prefer variety, it's best to check the chalkboard – it mainly features seasonal delicacies that change every two to three days – there's always something for vegetarians, too. I especially appreciate how flexible the kitchen is. If you don't like something or are allergic, we will always be happy to accommodate your wishes and try to make it right for you.

The boiled beef with vegetables from the regular menu

I've now been to the Zunfthaus twice, eating both from the menu and from the specials board. From the Wiener Schnitzel and the Brotzeitbrettel (a traditional German snack platter) with lard bread and fried chicken, to the succulent Cordon Bleu, the creamy lobster bisque, and the tender Tafelspitz (boiled beef) with vegetables and pike-perch fried in a potato crust, I've personally enjoyed everything here. Why? Because the philosophy of "always fresh and seasonal" is truly reflected in every dish. The value for money is also very reasonable, and a Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancake) for under €9 and a Wiener Schnitzel for under €19 are quite impressive. My favorites here are all the meat dishes. But the Pfanderl (a small pan of pancakes) with caramelized Kaiserschmarrn, raisins, almonds, and applesauce is absolutely delicious. Definitely try it and leave some room in your stomach!.

Festivals, events and functions at the guild house

An important part of the guildhall is its event space, specifically the enormous hall, which is ideal for large celebrations. This separately accessible hall is part of the tavern and is available for private parties and celebrations year-round. With its integrated stage, it also serves as the venue for many special shows that take place at the guildhall throughout the year – always accompanied, of course, by delicious Austrian cuisine. From murder mystery and horror dinners to drag shows, folk theater, and Bavarian plays, there's almost always something happening on the guildhall stage from October to June.

Cook, kitchen, history

I also had the pleasure of chatting with Heinz Wernitznig for a while, getting a tour of the house and talking to him about his work as a restaurateur and chef. A native Austrian, he has been working in the kitchen for over 30 years, 22 of them in Munich. His second restaurant, at the Aschheim Golf Club, was where he began cooking in the Munich area. From the very beginning, his focus has been on Austrian cuisine – he has even cooked in Michelin-starred restaurants in Vienna. "I always cook with a lot of passion. That's very important to me, and my five-person kitchen team at the Zunfthaus always works and cooks with great joy. It goes without saying that only the best ingredients end up in the pots and on the plates. I use as many regional ingredients as possible from the Munich area and only the freshest products. That's why our seasonal dishes change regularly," says Heinz Wernitznig about his passion for cooking and the philosophy of the Zunfthaus. You can find out more in this short clip – filmed in the Restaurants in Aschheim – also with a focus on Austrian cuisine.

I have rarely eaten such a delicious Kaiserschmarrn.

Interesting facts and hard facts

For warmer days, the guildhall also boasts a courtyard terrace with 25 seats. The restaurant is open daily from 4 pm to 11 pm, but no one will be turned away – for example, if things are going well at bowling on one of the two lanes (€12/hour) or if your beer glass (Paulaner) is still half full. Reservations are always a good idea, especially on weekends; never attend events without a reservation. It's great fun to stop by the guildhall, first for a meal and then for a game of bowling, or even to book spots for the numerous internal events (program available on the website, including reservation options). Enjoy discovering the wonderful guildhall!
