Café Prinzregent on Lake Starnberg is directly adjacent to the Bayerischer Hof hotel in Starnberg and is definitely worth a visit. I recently went there spontaneously with a companion for breakfast, and our expectations were not disappointed. Admittedly, as soon as we parked and got out of the car in the parking lot in front of the café and hotel, the first thing that hit us was an unavoidable smell of doner kebab – emanating from the doner kebab shop right on the corner of the parking lot. Not exactly pleasant on the way to breakfast, but we quickly forgot about it after walking up the curved stairs to the hotel entrance area towards Café Prinzregent.
Right in the café's entrance area, a friendly woman greeted us and led us inside, where we were then free to choose our own comfortable spot. We opted for a table on the right-hand side, which offered a view of the entire café: the cake counter, the cozy, ornate sofas, dark tables, high ceilings, and numerous tasteful details. Whether the café's decor is old-fashioned and thus conveys a certain feeling, or whether it exudes a charming and inviting atmosphere, is certainly debatable. We felt quite at ease, happily settled in, and helped ourselves to the magazines on offer, which provided a wide selection for café patrons.
The menus were already laid out on the tables, which were decorated with rather unattractive artificial flowers. The menus weren't particularly extensive, offering several different breakfasts, as well as a selection of small dishes and various ice cream sundaes. We opted for the breakfast for two, which included a variety of cheeses, cold cuts, truffle salami, a generous portion of fresh salmon, two 0.2-liter glasses of fresh orange juice, and two 0.1-liter glasses of champagne. The bread basket also contained two fresh, very tasty croissants, one of which I ate with the equally delicious rhubarb jam. Overall, the breakfast was relatively simple, but sufficient and good. Everything was fresh; we even managed to finish the salmon, and the accompanying free-range eggs were delicious and cooked to perfection. The cheese selection included two different types of sliced cheese, as well as three different types of other cheeses. Just as we were about to finish breakfast, the numerous cakes on display at the pastry counter beckoned to us. We opted for a plum cake with streusel topping and a cherry streusel cake with a cappuccino. Both cakes were very fresh, fruity, and delicious.
After asking for the bill, we paid €50 including tip, which is reasonable for a lavish breakfast with champagne, fresh orange juice, eggs, croissants, and two cakes, followed by coffee. Generally speaking, I think visiting the café and Lake Starnberg is more enjoyable and worthwhile when the sun is shining, perhaps with a post-breakfast stroll along the lake directly opposite. Of course, the breakfast itself tastes just as good in the rain. 🙂 There's also a terrace with outdoor seating under large umbrellas.
Those who don't fancy breakfast but would still like to visit the café can choose from a selection of light meals priced between €3.50 and €7.50. For example, there's tomato soup with a dollop of cream, potato dumplings with a salad, a vegetable plate with a fried egg, or chicken fricassee with rice. The small menu isn't particularly extensive, but it offers a good variety – although the focus is definitely on breakfast.
Card payments are accepted at the café on Lake Starnberg. I'd say the ambiance is either appealing or not, as it's quite unique, somewhere between old-fashioned and antique-chic. Our server was perfectly fine and was solely responsible for the entire café, which had about 30 tables but wasn't full, perhaps explaining her slightly stressed demeanor. The same woman had been on the phone the day before when we made the reservation and was very eager to please.
I can definitely recommend a visit to Café Prinzregent. If you don't have a car, that's not really a problem, as the Starnberg S-Bahn station is located directly between the lake and the hotel/café, making it easy to get there by public transport. Just to be on the safe side, bring some cash, as our cards didn't work initially. Even though it was a weekend visit, a reservation wasn't strictly necessary.
I'll be back: Yes. There's nothing wrong with that. The service was friendly. The breakfast was simple, straightforward, and good. Very cozy atmosphere right on the lake.
