Ca Ba Lu is a relatively unassuming, but by no means overlooked, burger joint in Lehel, right next to the Lehel U-Bahn station (lines 4 and 5). It's definitely worth the trip. Firstly, because the Lehel district is worth a visit in any case, and secondly, because Ca Ba Lu and its owners know what they're doing. They serve burgers – period. That's pretty much all the restaurant offers. There are a few starters like an appetizer platter or beef carpaccio (each for €10.50) and a wide selection of drinks – and that's all you need. The burger selection is fantastic.
I have to say, I've tried several times to get a table at Ca Ba Lu – by phone via reservation – and never had any luck. But back then, I didn't know what it was like. My companion and I ended up there very spontaneously, without a reservation or any plan. The plan for that evening was actually to visit Tattenbach on Tattenbachstrasse. But since we were ignored for over 10 minutes and didn't want to sit next to some rowdy men, we left. So we wandered around the streets for a bit and ended up at Ca Ba Lu. Incidentally, Ca Ba Lu stands for "Café, Bar and Lunch" – I know this because I asked the Bavarian gentleman. That's how it all started. Now, as I said, the focus is on the wildest burger creations.
During our visit, the weather was quite mild, and we decided to sit at one of the four tables for two outside. The extensive drink menus were already laid out on the cozy tables, and tea lights flickered in small holders, making me feel comfortable quite quickly. Our drink orders were taken by a friendly woman who spoke to us in a mix of English and German – but in a very charming and friendly manner. I chose a Hugo (for €7), and my companion ordered a still water (for €3). The drinks were served very quickly, and I really enjoyed the Hugo. To name just a few: Krusty Burger, Hell Burger, Surf & Turf Burger, Mr. Krabs Burger, Bison Burger, Wagyu Burger, Kids Burger, and much more – let yourself be surprised!.
My companion opted for the "Wies'n Burger" (the current weekly special), which was displayed in a separate showcase. It was available with 142g of meat for €12.50 or with 228g for €14.50 – my companion chose the larger version. The burger was topped with Aberdeen Angus beef, browned Leberkäse (a type of German meatloaf), tomatoes, onions braised in port wine, fresh mixed greens, cucumbers, coleslaw, Emmental cheese, homemade sauce, and sweet mustard – definitely not for a light meal. 😉 It also came with coleslaw and rosemary potatoes – as is standard with every burger. I chose the vegetarian burger – also available with a 100g or 200g vegetable patty – one or two patties, respectively. I opted against the 100g (€8.50) version and chose the 200g (€11.50) version, topped with a veggie patty and cheddar cheese. I left off the jalapeños, as I can't handle spicy food. And because two monster burgers weren't enough, my companion decided to order tortilla chips with salsa for €4 as a starter. Luckily for us, the owner, who was also taking our order, forgot about it because his phone rang at the same time, and we received our burgers about 10 minutes later.
We asked the friendly lady where the tortilla chips were, and the nice gentleman immediately apologized. We didn't think it was such a big deal anymore when we saw the burgers, as I mentioned. 🙂 To my shame, I must confess: I discreetly transferred half of my burger—that is, a whole veggie patty including half a burger with cheese and tomato, along with the rosemary potatoes—to my companion's plate. Despite the imminent risk of bursting, she managed to finish my half-burger because it was simply too good to leave uneaten, and we both happily rolled home. The burgers tasted very good—the bread was very soft and didn't taste like a pre-packaged burger from a bag. All the ingredients, including the coleslaw and potatoes, were very fresh and delicious. There was absolutely nothing to complain about, and I would definitely eat burgers here again.
We paid by card after falling into a "Schnitzel coma" (a Bavarian term for eating so much you can't move – it didn't have to be schnitzel 😉). Inside the tiny restaurant, barely bigger than an average living room and equipped with only about eight tables and a small bar, it wasn't very busy that evening, but I've made a firm resolution to eat burgers there sometime during the coming cold winter months. The service was great, the burgers were delicious, and while the €38 we paid wasn't exactly cheap, we did order the double version. 😉 You should definitely try Ca Ba Lu – the selection of burgers is phenomenal. But don't even think about showing up in a large group without a reservation – you might run into space issues. A visit is definitely worthwhile.
