5th Bavarian Food Festival at Odeonsplatz | August 5-7, 2016 The Bavarian Food Festival is taking place for the fifth time this year at Munich's Odeonsplatz. This year's theme is "Enjoying Wines from the Main River for Three Days." More precisely, starting August 5th, you can enjoy excellent wines and sparkling wines from Franconia, combined with Bavarian specialties. The ambiance and setting are once again ideally chosen, offering a summery and elegant charm. Surrounded by the magnificent Feldherrnhalle, the Theatinerkirche, and the Hofgarten, you can sample a wide variety of wines right in the heart of Odeonsplatz.
Bavarian culinary festival at Odeonsplatz: The WineWalks
Every year, and therefore also at the 2016 Bavarian Food Festival, WineWalks are offered – always popular and quickly booked up. Here, eight sommeliers lead small groups of visitors on popular and very special tasting tours. At the first tasting, the lead sommelier explains some basics about the wines, talks about the origin and type of grapes, what happens in the individual wine cellars after the harvest, and discusses the winemakers' goals during the respective winemaking process. It's no wonder the WineWalks are so popular; they give each wine a clear and personal touch.
Which cheese goes best with which wine?
Cocktails, wine, cheese and live music
The 2015 Bavarian Cocktail Champion, Mr. Thomas Magg, will also be there, mixing two Bavarian specialties in one glass. He'll show you how to create wonderfully refreshing and fruity cocktails using fine brandies (from the Bavarian premium fruit distiller "BayernBrand") and Franconian sparkling wine. And of course, you'll have the chance to sample them. Besides the wine tasting, I'm especially looking forward to this year's stage program by cheese sommelier Roswitha Boppeler. I love cheese and I love wine, so anything related to them is bound to be good. She'll be presenting Bavarian cheeses with protected designation of origin and suggesting the ideal pairings with corresponding wines and brandies. And for the fish lovers among you, there's something special too: a vibrant, regional fish cuisine featuring treasures from local waters, presented by master fisherman Lars Müller.
Zinners Wirtshaus – I've also been to their restaurant in Taufkirchen and was thrilled – will be presenting fine dishes at the festival, naturally accompanied by white, red, and rosé wines from Franconian vintners. From Friday to Sunday, there will also be plenty of live and unplugged music from Munich and the surrounding region on all three days. I'll definitely be stopping by several times over the three days, sampling the food, and maybe even meeting some of you there. The main focus of the 5th Bavarian Food Festival is, of course, "enjoying it yourself." You can relax, savor the atmosphere, engage in interesting conversations, and discover and taste fantastic new wines. Tables set with white tablecloths and shady parasols provide the perfect setting for spending a few wonderful hours relaxing at Odeonsplatz. The festival will be officially opened by Mr. Hubert Bittlmayer, Head of the Bavarian State Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forestry, on August 5th, 2016 at 6:00 PM, if you'd like to be there from the very beginning.
