Deliveroo Anyone who enjoys good food and the comfort of their own home will probably be familiar with Deliveroo. Because Deliveroo does exactly what its name suggests: it delivers. Specifically, it delivers food that you would otherwise only get in a restaurant, meaning you'd have to brave the cold. Deliveroo itself puts it this way: "Your favorite food, delivered to you," in an average of just 32 minutes. Sounds great, right? In 32 minutes, you'd normally just be out of your comfy sweatpants, freshened up a bit, and decided on a restaurant. With Deliveroo, the idea is that in the same amount of time, the aroma of freshly prepared food would waft towards you and your meal would be sitting in front of you. I wanted to try it out.
Let me explain how I first became aware of Deliveroo. Of course, the name and service had already been on my mind; these days, you hardly ever go to a restaurant in Munich without seeing the flyers and instructions for ordering through Deliveroo. So, I primarily noticed it because so many restaurants (from simple burrito stands to upscale establishments) participate, and I'm often out and about. But I was also recently invited to a three-course lunch menu provided by Deliveroo. The event was designed to give me a better understanding of Deliveroo and to test the service.
On-site, we were served fresh food at a beautifully set table made up of contributions from three restaurants that don't normally offer delivery. This meant we simply sat at our table in a small gallery space that didn't even have a kitchen, let alone an oven, and waited for our delicious meal. That's exactly what you have to do at home: choose your food, wait about 32 minutes, and enjoy. Convenient, right? Delivery is done by bicycle, moped, or sometimes even car – depending on which part of town you're ordering from. Your food arrives in small, white boxes, hygienically sealed with a Deliveroo label. So, the food arrives at your home warm and well-packaged, or at least it did for us.
As you can see from the pictures, our menu included a starter, main course, and dessert. First, we were treated to a dish from the popular Italian restaurant Il Mulino (here (I reported on it in detail) prepared an antipasti platter as a starter. Absolutely delicious and – since I already know the restaurant and can judge – presented just as fresh and appetizingly as in the restaurant itself. Of course, an aluminum tray isn't a white porcelain plate, but this didn't detract from the overall appearance, especially since you can always transfer your food to a plate. For the main course, the meat eaters had ossobuco with pearl onions, root vegetables, polenta, and gremolata, while the vegetarians had eggplant cannelloni with tomato sauce, Taleggio cheese, wild broccoli, and sour cream from the ELLA restaurant (I'll report on that later...). As a grand finale, a tiramisu from the Romans restaurant (here (As I reported), which I've also ordered on-site before, and here too: the quality is the same as in the restaurant. Everything tasted perfect, the main course was hot, and there was nothing to complain about.
Since I'm a good tester ;-), I didn't stop at the "public test" in the form of the Deliveroo event. I wanted to know a bit more about how it all works and whether everything really does. Well, after my first private order to my home, I know: It works. You enter your postcode, and immediately a list appears showing all the restaurants in your area and their distance from your apartment, office, or wherever you're ordering from. Then you choose a restaurant and select your food. In this list, you can also see when a new restaurant has been added (a small, yellow "New" indicator), allowing you to try new options – all without leaving the sofa. 🙂 The estimated delivery time shown in a column is also very helpful. I find it particularly useful because the 32 minutes is just a guideline and average, and your location should be taken into account. Admittedly, I had to pick up my order from a friend's house, as Deliveroo doesn't currently deliver to my postal code area, but according to them, they will be expanding their delivery service over time. Exactly 31 minutes later, my chosen dish (dumplings from Le Du) arrived. The driver was friendly, my dumplings were warm, and they tasted just like they do at the small restaurant on Theresienstraße itself. I deliberately chose a restaurant I'd already visited to be able to compare the quality. Everything was great. If you happen to forget to order something, you can contact their helpful customer service team, who will complete your order for you.
The ordering process is very simple: enter your postcode, select a restaurant, add your food to the cart, place your order, enter your details, wait, and enjoy. Great! You can only pay online, not with cash. A minimum order value of €12 is required, but this is rarely a problem in Munich. The delivery fee is €2.50 per order. However, if your order doesn't reach €12, you can still have your food delivered for an additional €2. Deliveroo generally ensures that you pay the same price for your meals as you would if you were dining in. In most cases, this is true, and you actually only pay €2.50 or €4.50 more for delivery than you would at the restaurant.
My personal conclusion: I'm thrilled. If I ever need something delivered that I can't get through a regular delivery service, Deliveroo will definitely be my go-to. Reliable, punctual, and hassle-free. For anyone who loves enjoying top-quality food from their favorite restaurant but prefers to stay home on the sofa, Deliveroo is the perfect solution.
