THE LITTLE FLO – Mini burgers in 27 different varieties – The burger craze in Munich began in 2012, and since then, especially in the last two to three years, more and more burger joints have popped up. From rolling burger trucks to ramen noodle burgers to burgers with gold leaf – we've got it all. While some can't get enough of meat, lettuce, onions, and the like between two buns, others find it all a bit much. But that burgers can be done completely differently, and that you can stand out from the crowd with your concept, is demonstrated by "Der kleine Flo" – a truly wonderful "mini-burger" shop that cleverly rekindles the burger trend with its 27 different tapas-sized mini-burgers.

The Little Flo – Mini-Burger – the concept

The "Mini-Burger" shop located on Josephspitalstraße has a unique concept: mini-burgers, about five to six centimeters in diameter, in 27 different varieties. Some with meat, some without, some with goat cheese or avocado, some sweet or spicy, and some vegetarian and even vegan. Absolutely fantastic! How does such an idea come about? Co-owner Julia explains: „I was in Malaga for a semester abroad and discovered and fell in love with the local tapas cuisine. I loved the idea of eating together and trying so many different flavors. At the same time, I'd been dreaming for a long time of owning my own café or shop with Flo. And since Flo and I have always loved burgers, the idea finally came to us: why not combine both – tapas and burgers? We were aware that burgers were a trendy food at the time, but it was the idea itself that fascinated and motivated us to implement the concept. After I finished my studies and the idea continued to mature, we finally seized the opportunity in 2016 to rent a location in downtown Munich, spent several months renovating, and finally launched our concept of combining tapas with burgers in 2017 with Kleiner Flo.“

Framework, concept and philosophy

The restaurant opened just two years ago and has already become an indispensable part of Munich's foodie and restaurant scene. This isn't just because the idea is fantastic, but also because the philosophy of founder and namesake Flo – a trained chef, by the way – and Julia is simply spot on, and the concept works perfectly. Every guest entering the cozy restaurant is greeted warmly and shown to their table. A word of advice: reservations are a must! The mini-burgers are literally on everyone's lips, and the 32 indoor seats fill up quickly, especially in the evenings. (There's a terrace with ten seats for the summer.) Once you're seated, you'll receive the menu on a small clipboard.

After the cover and a "Hello at Little Flo" introduction, the different burger varieties are listed in various price categories – ranging from €2.70 to €4.20 per burger, depending on the toppings. Divided into "The Classics," "Mingas Burger Classics," "G'Zupft," "Around the World," "The Chicken Connection," and "More Ox," the extensive menu offers something for everyone. Burgers with beef, pork, chicken, or turkey, as well as fish, vegan (with focaccia bread), and vegetarian options are available.„

Our beef comes from the Lamplhof farm in the Glonn Valley, our chicken from the Viktualienmarkt (Munich's central market), our eggs from Engl Eier in Velden, and our flour from Munich's last remaining grain mill. With our products, we want to support regional and local businesses as much as possible and also know where the products come from. "Supporting the locals is very important to me, especially now when you see how many small shops, for example here in Munich's city center, are being forced out of business," said Julia, when asked what is sometimes a top priority when selecting ingredients and raw materials.

The buns, weighing approximately 40 grams, are homemade according to our own recipe.

„"Everything is homemade!" and "What's on the menu?"

Side dishes and dips can be individually selected and combined. The side dishes are as varied as they are diverse. There are fries, breadsticks, sweet potato fries, mixed leaf salads, Caesar salad, and regularly changing "special sides" (between €2.90 and €5.50). If you can't decide, you can choose the "Side Trio" (for €5.50) and receive three different sides and a dip of your choice. Speaking of dips – there are seven different ones, all homemade. You won't just be tearing open a packet here! All the dips (varieties: chimichurri, spicy barbacoa, coriander mayo, herb cream, Caesar, truffle mayo, mayo, and ketchup) are made according to our own recipes and are served with the burgers and sides.

Even the buns, weighing around 40 grams each – definitely the heart of a good burger – are homemade, or rather, produced by the team themselves after months of experimenting with ingredients and recipes. No pre-made dough or ready-made burger buns are used. Owner Julia puts it this way: "Besides regional ingredients, it's very important to us that we work with great, high-quality products overall. That's why we make a lot ourselves and know exactly what goes into it. We also decided not only to make our own dips and buns, but we also pickle the cucumbers and onions for the mini-burgers right here on-site, following the example of New York pickle stores. These are the factors that, in my opinion, make our mini-burgers something truly special, in addition to their small size," says Flo.

Order and enjoy

For those who find it hard to decide during their visit, there's the "quick selection" at the back of the menu. There you'll find five different burger combos, ranging from €8.60 to €10.50, each consisting of three mini-burgers. Sides and dips can be freely chosen. Vegetarian and vegan burger combos are also available. If you simply don't feel like a burger but have been outvoted by your group and now "have to" sit at the small table with Flo, you can also opt for the salad selection. The Caesar salad is available not only as a side dish, but also in the classic style or with chicken or goat cheese (for €9.90/€12.90/€13.90). "Our primary goal is for our guests to feel comfortable. That's why, in addition to delicious food, we also try to create a cozy atmosphere – a bit of a café feel in this mini-burger joint." This is also reflected in our coffee and hot drink menu, which is quite extensive for a burger restaurant and very popular with our guests. In general, it's great for us to see that a large number of people keep coming back. This shows us that they feel comfortable and enjoy being with us, which is the greatest compliment for us.„

Definitely worth trying: The changing lunchtime mini-burger menu

Orders are placed on small order slips located in the center of the table (see left). First, you write down which burgers you'd like – two to four are recommended depending on your appetite – then which side dish(es) you'd like and whether you want a regular or small portion ("Standard" / "Flo-Portion"). Next, you note your desired dips. The fourth and final step is a line for your name – this helps the staff keep track of which burger plate belongs to whom when serving. Each burger weighs around 120 to 150 grams and is topped with approximately 50 grams of meat – this helps you gauge how much you'll want and whether you'd prefer two, three, or even four burgers. I definitely recommend trying your way through the menu, because the burgers are simply delicious! „We eat our mini burgers almost every day. It doesn't always have to be meat, and with so many different flavors, it never gets boring. You can never really get tired of looking at our delicious mini burgers (laughs),“ Julia and Flo concluded. If you'd like to try them at lunchtime, you can do so with our regularly changing lunch specials. For €7.50–€8.50, from Monday to Friday starting at 11:30 a.m., you can get two different burgers, a side dish, and a spritzer. Why not click through the following photo gallery?
