Great sushi and Asian food from EatHappy – Do you know that feeling? – The best stories in life often start unexpectedly. That's how it was for me with EatHappy when I recently walked into a Munich supermarket – hungry, as usual – and was looking for some good food. During my stroll, I discovered the refrigerated display cases, which were new to me, filled with fresh sushi boxes and bowls from EatHappy. So why not give them a try? A devoured sushi box and a poké bowl later, I was not only happy with my lunch choice, but I also wanted to learn more about EatHappy, its 800 locations, shop-in-shop concepts, and its culinary offerings.

Craving fresh sushi? – Aside from the current situation and the lockdown, it doesn't always have to come from a delivery service or a restaurant to be of good quality. EatHappy shows that it can be done differently, through retailers and their own shop-in-shop sushi stores. As mentioned earlier, I first noticed the sushi and Asian food provider EatHappy during a trip to the supermarket. Admittedly, I rarely buy sushi from the deli counter – regardless of the store – because my experiences with taste and freshness have been rather mediocre. EatHappy was completely different – even after several trials.

Gyoza, Rainbow Rolls, Nigiri, Uramaki and, and, and…

Why is that? At EatHappy, they are uncompromising in their choice of fresh ingredients. This also aligns with EatHappy's concept, meaning that everything you buy there (or pre-order – more on that in a moment) is lovingly handcrafted on-site – whether it's a sushi box, poké bowls, or other Asian specialties like Japanese skewers, wakame salads, or mochi ice cream in four different flavors. In addition, there is a great selection of Asian sauces and dips that you can't buy anywhere else. Freshness, variety, quality, and sustainability are cornerstones of EatHappy's business philosophy. It's not just the delicious taste that impresses, but also the resource-efficient sourcing of raw materials, such as the fish used for sushi. EatHappy is also committed to fair farming and fishing practices and pays close attention to the origin of its fish. Therefore, the salmon comes from Norway, the tuna from Korea, and the rice from Italy. When you choose EatHappy vegetables, you're enjoying regional produce. Fantastic, in my opinion. The sushi boxes not only showcase the craftsmanship of the approximately 3,000 employees with creative combinations, but also reflect EatHappy's extremely extensive and diverse product range. In other words: you won't have an easy time choosing when you're standing in front of the overflowing and colorful display counters in the shops or the freezers. I know what I'm talking about. 😉

So, after a quick glance into the freezer, I grabbed a mixed sushi box and a "Poké Bowl Premium" with rice, salmon, tuna, cucumber, edamame, avocado, mango, arugula, masago, and sesame sauce – I was really hungry. 😉 Even just looking at the selection in the store, you can see that fresh ingredients are their top priority. The transparent packaging makes it immediately clear that not only is the food presented very attractively, but only high-quality fish, fresh fruit, ingredients, and herbs are used. The sushi, salmon, and tuna aren't overly greasy, the fish doesn't have any dried-out spots, and there's no unappetizing condensation inside the boxes – none of that! Since I already had a feeling I'd made a great choice for lunch, I was really looking forward to my first EatHappy experience on the way home.

Shop EatHappy Sushi & Bowls

Now you probably want to try it too, right? – To test the sushi provider EatHappy, founded in 2013, you should know that there are two ways to sample their food. Either you reach into one of the chests – like I did during my first test – and grab your boxes, or you go to one of the "shop-in-shop" stores located inside supermarkets. There you'll also find larger, well-stocked chests, and always staff who prepare the fresh sushi right before your eyes. Cool, isn't it? So, that means you first have to get ready for... EatHappy website via postcode your nearest EatHappy store You can choose your sushi and then decide whether a smaller freezer is sufficient, or whether you'd prefer to explore EatHappy's entire selection in person, i.e., visit the shop. The advantage here is that you can not only watch the trained EatHappy team prepare sushi, but also choose from the complete range if something isn't available on display. So, for shopping, you simply reach into the freezer and take what catches your eye, or ask the staff what you'd like them to prepare for you.

Aside from that: You can Pre-order sushi platters online until 4 pm and pick it up the next day from 11 am at the nearest EatHappy shop during the opening hours of the respective supermarket. This is ideal for special occasions, but also for enjoying a meal with a small group of two to four people. You have a choice of four fantastic platters. This is something I particularly liked about EatHappy, because they cater to both "spontaneous diners" and those who prefer to pre-order larger sushi platters. EatHappy is also working on making online pre-ordering available for other products in the future. (Now, let's briefly consider a post-pandemic future: EatHappy also offers catering for events and corporate functions.)

My selection at EatHappy

As I mentioned, I tested the sushi several times. For round two, there was plenty of sushi not only for me, but also for my companion, who was helping me with the tasting – and who, by the way, was a complete sushi novice. For my test, I specifically went to a shop I had filtered on the website and selected what I wanted to eat online. I personally always like to get an overview before picking up food. So I did just that, opting for a colorful mix to try as much as possible. There was "Chicken Gyoza" – filled dumplings with chicken and sesame sauce; "Maki Mix" with salmon and cucumber; "Classic Nigiri Mix" with salmon nigiri, ebi, and tuna; a "Sake Box" with salmon maki, salmon nigiri, California salmon and avocado, and salmon and avocado futo; a "Poké Bowl Premium" – the same as above, which my companion was eager to try; a "Donburi Salmon Avocado" bowl with rice, salmon, avocado, soy sauce, wasabi, and ginger; two "Summer Rolls" with salmon and avocado; and "Rainbow Mango" with Salmon, avocado, cream cheese and mango, and "California Spicy Salmon Crunch" with cooked salmon, cucumber, fried onions and teriyaki sauce. Also included is a small box of "wakame" and a double tub of "mochi ice cream".

I always feel good when I'm doing my favorite thing.

Everything tasted wonderful, My favorites were definitely the "Rainbow Mango Roll" and the "California Spicy Salmon Crunch Roll." I could have eaten them all day. As a big fan of uramaki and nigiri, the sake box came next in my personal ranking, although I also really enjoyed the fresh wakame salad. – As you can see, it's hard to choose, and even harder after tasting everything. 😉 Simply put, everything was excellent, fresh, attractively presented, and delicious. My selection above, by the way, came to €75 – just to give you an idea of the price. I recommend checking it out online and getting your mouth watering before you start enjoying it.

Hard facts and personal opinion

Absolutely, thumbs up! EatHappy is the perfect snack, a potential solution for our Christmas menus this year, and a lifesaver when your stomach starts rumbling at lunch or dinner. The quality is excellent, and the prices are right. Anyone who knows a bit about sushi – and I'm a very experienced sushi eater – will love it. 😉 –, who knows that raw fish of the appropriate quality also costs something – here the price-performance ratio is absolutely right.

I'm also personally delighted that EatHappy continues to grow, with 150 new shops opening every year. I'm lucky enough to have an EatHappy store relatively close to my home, but this ensures that none of you have to travel too far to find your nearest sushi spot. It will probably take me a while to try everything – we're talking over 150 different creations – but I already know I'm going to become an EatHappy addict. With such delicious food and a fitting company name, it's hardly surprising, is it? 😉
