I recently went to El Perro Y El Griego with my companion. I'm not entirely sure how to pronounce it, but it was definitely a wonderful evening with delicious food and excellent service. The restaurant is located in Haidhausen, near the Ostbahnhof (East Train Station), on Belfortstraße, making it easily accessible from Munich's Ostbahnhof. They specialize in Spanish cuisine. My companion and I opted for a three-course meal consisting of a starter, main course, and dessert.
Immediately upon entering the restaurant, located in a beautiful corner building, we noticed it was packed and we probably wouldn't have gotten a table had we not reserved in advance via email. The restaurant is very narrow and extends far back. In the rear, in a small, separate area, there are five more separate, somewhat smaller tables. We only had to wait a short while before a friendly server showed us to one of these quieter tables in the corner. Upon entering the restaurant, you're immediately confronted by the long bar, which dominates the room and displays tapas in small white bowls. Opposite the bar are numerous tables for two (about 15 in total), all of which, as mentioned, were occupied.
As we sat down, the friendly server came right to our table, asked for our drink orders, and we ordered a Hugo (€5.50) and a still mineral water (€2.50/0.25l). The drinks were served very quickly, and the server immediately brought me a straw for the delicious, not-too-sweet Hugo when I asked. For starters, we each got to choose three different tapas. We went to the bar mentioned earlier, and the staff placed our chosen tapas on plates in generous portions. You don't have to wait at the bar until your order is ready; you can sit back down, and the tapas will be brought to your table with delicious bread. The tables are simply dark wooden tables, as are the chairs, but the restaurant has a very cozy atmosphere. There are candles on the tables, Spanish pictures on the walls, and half-tiled walls with Spanish patterns in the back.
The antipasti served was excellent. We opted for yellow lentil salad, scampi salad, crab and seafood salad, kidney bean, chicken, and vegetable salad, hummus, and vegetarian quiche as tapas. Everything tasted very fresh and delicious – so if you like it all, you can order it again exactly the same way. As you can see from the pictures, the antipasti was beautifully presented and looked very appetizing. As soon as we finished our plates, the empty dishes were cleared away, and our ordered paella with fish and two king prawns was served. Some people like a little break between courses, but personally, I find a wait of about 10-15 minutes quite pleasant.
The paella we ordered was also very attractively presented and immediately made us want to eat. Admittedly, the two oysters didn't appeal to me as much, so I focused on the delicious, fresh paella with its very tender fish, which practically melted in my mouth without any bite. The rice had just the right firmness, and overall it was a very successful meal. After we had devoured the large platter of paella for two (served with two small dessert plates and cutlery), we were brought dessert. Two delicious crème catalana with an espresso macchiato for €2.30. The caramelized sugar coating on the crème was perfect, and the crème itself tasted very good. We found it a little odd that the crèmes were served in two different small spoonfuls and differed slightly in portion size – but no big deal, I got the larger one. 😉
All in all, I can wholeheartedly recommend a visit to El Perron Y El Griego. If you enjoy tapas, generally like Spanish cuisine, and don't mind a bit of a lively atmosphere throughout the evening, then this is definitely the place for you. Don't forget to make a reservation, even if you're coming during the week. This Spanish restaurant has already made a name for itself in Haidhausen, and if you drop by spontaneously, you might have to wait a while. Another positive aspect was that we didn't have to wait long when we arrived. We were immediately registered and asked if we had a reservation. I consider it a very positive sign for a restaurant when, despite the hustle and bustle and a full house, guests are given the opportunity to relax and receive a friendly welcome. The service remained pleasant, friendly, and relaxed until we paid and left.
There are also regularly changing evening drinks, which you can order throughout the evening for a relatively low price. In addition, a tapas menu is offered for €19.90 per person, and you can order as many tapas as you like from the display case. Otherwise, typical Spanish dishes are offered, and you can choose from various paellas; "estradas" such as potato and zucchini cream soup (€4.80), dates and prunes wrapped in bacon (€6.90), and roasted chicken breast and mushrooms (€10.90); tapas; and rice, fish, and meat dishes. For example, grilled sole fillet with olive oil, salad, and rice costs €14.90; a rice dish with fresh seafood, shellfish, and vegetables is also available for €14.90; and desserts such as crema catalana or chocolate Baileys cake are available for an average of €5.50. In addition, a variety of wines by the glass are offered on the menu, averaging €6.90 for a simple glass of white wine. It's best to simply take a look at the menu. here online.
El Perron Y El Griego also offers a lunch menu. From Monday to Friday, hot meals are served continuously from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM, and you can enjoy a variety of dishes at reasonable lunchtime prices. Several lunch menus are available, which also include a choice of tapas from the display case, for an average of €8.50. Menu suggestions for events with 10 to 120 people are also offered; you can view these on the website. Private parties are also possible. Card payments are accepted at this Spanish restaurant. Opening hours are Monday to Friday from 12:00 PM to 1:00 AM, and Saturday and Sunday from 4:00 PM to 1:00 AM. Stop by – you won't regret it. It might be a bit challenging for a quiet evening in a romantic setting due to the somewhat high noise level, but it's still cozy. Outside the restaurant, there are also some cozy tables where you can eat and chat in a more relaxed atmosphere, weather permitting. Unfortunately, the restrooms are rather poor. We ended up paying €62 – not exactly cheap, but a lovely meal nonetheless. 🙂
I'll be back: Yes. If I don't mind slightly noisy restaurants, definitely. The food is great.
