On my last visit to the city center, I strolled through the market and discovered the new little shop that has been supplying us with fresh, warm bread and – currently – the finest Fritz gingerbread since the end of November 2020. Of course, I couldn't just walk past it…

Here, whole and half loaves of bread are sold to you.

The Fritz Mühlenbäckerei bakery at the Viktualienmarkt in Munich

For me, Munich's Viktualienmarkt is always a wonderful experience – no matter how often I walk through it or shop there, I always discover something new and am fascinated by the vibrant atmosphere created by the many people. The Viktualienmarkt is truly the only place in the city where I feel a bit like a tourist, getting to know the city and exploring the numerous small stalls, shops, and culinary delights. So I was all the more delighted when, recently after an appointment, I discovered one of these shops – perhaps THE newest shop at the Viktualienmarkt, the Fritz Mühlen bakery.

My previous visits to the also recently opened branch on Müllerstraße and my tour of the Ayinger production facilities naturally piqued my curiosity. Firstly, because I love good, fresh bread, and secondly, because I naturally wanted to know exactly what was on offer and what was available on the shelves.

Oh yes, I also learned during my visit that the new Viktualienmarkt location is supplied with fresh, warm pretzels and bread from the Fritz bakery on Müllerstraße, just a stone's throw away – currently even in a really "old school" way with their own Fritz Mühlenbäckerei cargo bike – cool, right? So you can get fresh pretzels all day long via express bike delivery ;-).

What I find appealing is that you can see what's going on in the approximately 50-square-meter bakery even before entering, as the Viktualienmarkt stall is almost entirely enclosed in glass. This allows you to see the attractively arranged bread counter with its shelves full of bread, the coffee bar serving "Merchant and Friends" coffee, and the well-stocked display from afar. Upon inquiring, I learned that the Fritz Mühlenbäckerei opened on November 19th and offers the entire Fritz product range there. Similar to the original bakery on Haidhauser Rablstraße, you can find all the types of bread the bakery offers here as well. One small difference: at the Viktualienmarkt, you can only buy the bread whole or by the half loaf; it's not sliced. This is partly to preserve the market atmosphere, and in keeping with Munich tradition, only whole or half loaves are to be purchased.

Of course, I couldn't resist taking a look at the gingerbread display, which was currently overflowing with treats. They'd even added an extra shelf to the shop, filled with various packages containing the finest, homemade Fritz gingerbread. It was definitely worth a look.

Absolutely delicious: The Fritz gingerbread from the Fritz mill bakery

I don't know about you, but there are just so few arguments against a good Fritz gingerbread, right? 😉 To put it another way: It's practically impossible to walk past it. Let's take a look at the selection: There are three filled varieties of Fritz gingerbread (for €3.35 each): eggnog, nougat, and orange. A small indentation is made in each gingerbread, which is then filled with the corresponding filling, such as nougat or orange. Afterward, the gingerbread is coated in chocolate and dried. Besides the filled varieties, there are also four "classics" (for €3.10 each), which come in walnut, coconut, hazelnut, and almond flavors. I've been told that the almond gingerbread is by far the most popular, and now that I've tried it, I can certainly understand why. 😉

Mmm! Have you ever tried gingerbread with coconut flavor?

You can buy the gingerbread individually, in mixed packs of four, or by variety. A pack contains either four of your favorite varieties or one of each classic – ideal for sampling or as a gift. Important additional information: All packaged gingerbread is gluten-free and certified by the German Celiac Society (DZG). Filled Fritz gingerbread, on the other hand, is always sold in packs of two by variety, or you can choose them individually at the counter from our friendly staff. And of course, the full range of Fritz gingerbread is available at all Fritz bakeries, including those on Rablstraße, Müllerstraße, at the Viktualienmarkt, and in Aying.

A good coffee, a delicious gingerbread, and fresh bread to take home. Great!

Experience it yourself

So, now all that's missing is you! 🙂 So, hey, bundle up, grab your loved ones, and come on by. Even now in winter, and despite the limited options, a visit is a real treat – delicious gingerbread and fine coffee taste great to go or take away. You can already imagine how lovely the shop will be in summer when the additional bistro tables and the coffee corner for snacking and enjoying coffee are set up. It's simply a joy to stand at Munich's Viktualienmarkt all year round, enjoy something delicious to eat and drink, and soak up the Munich atmosphere – it's great that there's now another hotspot for that – and even combined with fresh pretzels. What more could you want?
