Scheyern Monastery Tavern – culinary delights in the brewery tavern

Scheyern Monastery Tavern Almost everyone has probably heard of the Scheyern Monastery, about 45 minutes from Munich's city center. This beautiful monastery has existed since 1119, and the monks have been brewing their own delicious Bavarian beer there ever since. This makes it not only the third oldest brewery in Germany, but also one of the oldest breweries in the world. And where there's good beer, good food is never far away. I decided to check this out and went with my companion to the Scheyern Monastery Tavern for a meal.

Several advantages are immediately apparent even before tasting: the idyllic location, the stunning view of the monastery and its spacious, beautifully landscaped garden, and the on-site beer brewed right there on the premises. However, what truly makes the monastery special, in my opinion, is the brewery taproom and the adjoining rooms of the Scheyern Monastery Tavern. I know this because I thoroughly enjoyed myself, from the appetizer to the main course and heavenly dessert. But let's start from the beginning…

Scheyern Monastery Tavern – the Brewery Pub

The Bräustüberl at the Scheyern Monastery Tavern offers seating for 120 people at its 17 tables. I felt comfortable as soon as I entered. A friendly waitress approached us and showed us to our pre-reserved table by the window. As I sat down and looked around, I had a good view of the entire room. Lots of light wood, dried hops hanging from the ceiling, subtle lighting, fresh flowers and lit candles on the tables, and an all-around cozy and quite "Bavarian" ambiance prevail in the Scheyern Monastery Tavern – ideal for feeling at ease, in my opinion.

Selection and evaluation of the dishes

We were handed the menus right away, and since my stomach was already rumbling, we immediately started choosing. The menu is clearly laid out and offers a good mix. Besides the daily specials, which sometimes feature seasonal delicacies such as, currently, fresh asparagus with various side dishes and other asparagus creations, there's the regular menu. There you'll find soups, salads, appetizers, Bavarian snacks, classic Bavarian specialties, and even a special burger. The onion roast beef (for €16.80) particularly appealed to my companion, and since switching the side dish from fries to fried potatoes was no problem, the decision was quickly made. For me, the choice was quite easy as well. If asparagus is on the menu, I don't even have to look any further. I'm definitely one of those people who treat themselves to asparagus at least two or three times a week during asparagus season. So I ordered this one with hollandaise sauce and melted nut butter, as well as potatoes and (optionally) pike-perch fillet (for €21.80).

The onion roast beef

Before enjoying our main courses, we chose two different soups from the daily specials. Both my choice of frothy wild garlic cream soup (€5.70) and my companion's homemade asparagus cream soup with asparagus pieces (€5.50) were delicious. Intense flavor, perfectly chilled, and a fair portion – an ideal starter for all soup lovers. For me, a starter should never be too filling, but it still needs to be enough to whet the appetite for the next course. This one achieved that perfectly. When the main courses arrived, I ordered a glass of Franconian Silvaner (Winzerkeller Sommerach winery | €5.50 | 0.2l) to accompany my asparagus, while my companion stuck to water. Opinions on the onion roast beef are, of course, divided when it comes to taste and meat quality. This one from the Scheyern Monastery Tavern, made with sirloin steak, was excellent, perfectly seared, and, combined with the crispy onions and well-seasoned fried potatoes, a clear winner. The asparagus, along with the perfectly seared pike-perch fillet, was just as good. The portion was just right, and I managed to eat all six asparagus spears, including the fish. The hollandaise sauce is, of course, homemade. I can highly recommend the asparagus, fish, meat, and soup. If you're not very hungry, you might want to skip the appetizer. If you do order dessert, like my companion and I did, we recommend it. They don't have Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancake), but they do have other delicious options. I asked for recommendations and chose the enormous cream puff with marinated strawberries (€5.80). My companion opted for a chocolate lava cake with a soft center and fruit compote (€5.90). True to the motto "there's always room for more sugar," we both finished our dessert plates. My cream puff was rich, but also incredibly delicious. Fresh strawberries combined with something cold and sweet are simply a great classic and harmonized perfectly with the cream puff. The chocolate cake was also fantastic, and I promptly devoured the soft center from my companion. 🙂

The beer garden in summer

The beer garden of the Scheyern Monastery Tavern

Since summer is just around the corner, I want to mention the beer garden again: it can accommodate another 500-600 guests. I was standing right in front of the cozy beer garden with its numerous tables, snack and barbecue area, large trees, and fresh flowers. Although the weather meant I couldn't enjoy the beer garden during my visit, and therefore none of the usual offerings – pork knuckle, chicken, duck, and rolled roast – were on the double grills, nor was there any fresh monastery beer to be seen, I immediately felt like coming back for another summer visit.

Ideal for private and business events: weddings, celebrations and conferences

The Scheyern Monastery Tavern is a well-known landmark, far beyond the borders of Bavaria. Numerous buses, tourists, and locals from the surrounding area, as well as Munich and beyond, regularly flock to the monastery to visit and enjoy its excellent cuisine. Whether for a monastery tour, a visit to the beer garden, a delicious meal in the Bräustüberl (brewery tavern), or even for large family and private celebrations, the Scheyern Monastery Tavern is a popular choice. Weddings, for example, are especially sought after. After having the opportunity to see all the facilities – and of course, to dine there – I can certainly understand why. Take a look at the pictures in the gallery (below) to get a better impression. So, if you're looking for a wedding venue in the Munich area, I'd like to not only recommend the Scheyern Monastery Tavern as a restaurant critic, but also encourage you to plan your celebration there or at least inquire about it. Whether it's a private or corporate event, Scheyern is sure to offer the perfect setting.

Cheers!

My personal conclusion

Go there! Whether for a visit to the beer garden, a fresh beer, delicious food in the Bräustüberl (brewery tavern), or even to get married. 😉 What are 45-50 minutes of driving on a beautiful weekend with plenty of time, when good food, a wonderful stay in the beer garden, or a stroll through the monastery garden beckon? The food – as you can easily see from the pictures – is simply fantastic. Fresh ingredients, a knack for plating, and friendly, attentive service are all part of the experience. The Scheyern Monastery Tavern even has its own playground for the little ones. An added bonus: On Sundays, fresh bread is baked right there in the tavern for you to pick up. Cool, right? So, if you don't have any plans for the weekend yet: Hop in the car and head to Scheyern. Say hi from me, and don't forget to come hungry! Oh, and definitely keep the monastery in mind as a wedding and event venue.
