Load The place on Türkenstraße is a very small restaurant/café that was recommended to me here on my blog. We went there last weekend for breakfast and lunch.
The café is very small, with about 13-15 relatively small tables and one longer table – with tree stumps for chairs – in the middle of the shop, where we sat. We had reserved a table by phone beforehand and were initially seated at a very (!) small table by the window, which I didn't like, so we ended up sitting on the tree stumps. We had to drape our jackets on our laps, as tree stumps don't have backs. Shortly before we finished eating, I discovered a small coat rack in the back corner of the shop.
The menu itself is short but well-rounded (see photo for an excerpt). A positive point is that a new menu is offered daily – meaning a new sheet of dishes is clipped to the clipboard – and there's a good variety. We opted for the spaghetti with scampi, scrambled eggs with goat's cheese on whole-wheat bread, and as a starter, a black salsify soup with – originally roasted hazelnuts, but they were out – so roasted almonds instead.
The soup was delicious, served in a huge bowl, and was very generous. It was intensely flavorful and sprinkled with plenty of almonds. We were quite full after the soup – which I would recommend sharing if you're ordering it as a starter. (The soup was on a daily changing menu, so it might not always be available.) We were asked if we wanted bread and received four slices of exceptionally delicious, fluffy bread with a wonderfully crisp crust. The scampi spaghetti and the scrambled eggs with goat cheese arrived shortly after we finished the starter and were attractively presented. According to my companion, the scampi were "exactly how scampi should be" – firm to the bite and with a good texture. The scrambled eggs were quite rich, but tasted excellent with the accompanying whole-wheat bread and butter. The goat cheese incorporated into the scrambled eggs was a perfect complement. Both were ample portions and left us completely satisfied after the soup. (So my recommendation is: Try the scrambled eggs with goat cheese! It's also available without the cheese and with fresh tomatoes).
The most striking feature of the shop is undoubtedly the enormous bar – for the shop's size – which runs directly behind the aforementioned long table, complete with bar stools, a wooden counter, and a simple design – as is generally the case throughout the shop: a white and beige wallpapered wall in the seating area, otherwise white walls, a red flower on each table, sugar not in a shaker but in a glass with a teaspoon, tree stump chairs, clipboards as menus, and very basic white dishes. What immediately struck me – well, perhaps the dishwasher was just broken – was that when our empty plates were cleared away, they went straight into the sink for handwashing (!). Somewhat unusual, and certainly not considered by some to be the most refined English way of washing dishes. Various magazines and newspapers hang in a magazine rack to the side.
I would definitely go back to this place anytime; there really wasn't anything to complain about. The waiters – all young guys – were very friendly and attentive. The atmosphere in the restaurant was pleasant and welcoming. (My companion didn't find it quite as cozy – that's certainly a matter of opinion). Card payments are accepted. We paid €29 including tip for the aforementioned food, water, juice spritzer, and cappuccino.
I'll be back: Yes, if I want something small, cozy, simple, yet tasty and filling enough to eat. Just sitting comfortably and chatting – no problem.
