Munich metropolitan area | My personal TOP 12
As recently announced on Facebook, I've been wanting to post a top list – naturally, based on my own personal opinion and judgment – of the best restaurants and pubs in the Munich area for you for quite some time now. And of course, everything I present or suggest has been personally tested by me.
If you have a car, time, and a big appetite, then you've come to the right place and meet the perfect criteria for this top 12 list of restaurants in the Munich area. I got in my car and drove around a bit outside of Munich to compile this list. There are hundreds of restaurants, and of course, a particularly large number serving Bavarian cuisine. See for yourself where it's worth eating.
The The order of the restaurants from the Munich area itself is, as usual, irrelevant. And all of them are special in their own way and worth a visit, in my opinion. Some prefer the lakeside setting, others like to dine tucked away among tall trees at the idyllic edge of the forest, while still others enjoy the panoramic view of the Alps. So, it's best to see for yourself which corner and atmosphere (and of course, the food) appeals to you most.

Munich area – Restaurant tips from readers
Before I get started with my personal list, I'd like to share the tips you readers gave me for visiting the Munich area and finding a restaurant. I haven't been there yet, but I plan to check them all out:
- To the historic wine estate in Rosenheim „"I recommend the Zur historischen Weinlände in Rosenheim; you can, for example, take a shopping trip there on Saturday. On Saturdays, they offer a three-course lunch menu including coffee for €16. It's a bit more expensive in the evening, but worth every penny. It's best to ask for advice on wine; the list is very extensive."“

1. FREISINGER HOF - Oberföhring
Freisinger Hof The Freisinger Hof in Oberföhring is both a hotel and a restaurant. It serves upscale Austrian and German cuisine in a cozy yet chic atmosphere. 2. ALTER WIRT - Grünwald
Old Inn - Grünwald Organic, organic, organic! Specifically, an organic hotel including an organic restaurant. Naturally, this makes it a bit more expensive, but it's fantastic and well worth a visit. The Alte Wirt in Grünwald impresses with its upscale Bavarian cuisine and friendly service. The hotel and restaurant are located on Grünwald's market square, where you'll also find several other restaurants I've already reviewed (Jaipur, Costa Smeralda (now closed), Chang, etc.). 3. GASTHAUS RUF - Seefeld (on Lake Ammersee)
Gasthaus Ruf | Be sure to stop by Gasthaus Ruf, or even better, stop in for a meal if you're driving towards Ammersee. Even better: make a special trip to Ammersee just to visit the inn. With its beer garden in summer, alpine hut in winter, and delicious Bavarian cuisine and meat dishes from its own (!) butchery year-round, this 150-year-old, family-run inn is sure to impress. to the article -

4. AYINGER OTTOBRUNN - Ottobrunn
Ayinger Ottobrunn Ayinger Ottobrunn is a very cozy and spacious Bavarian restaurant in Ottobrunn, a southern suburb of Munich. While the exterior isn't particularly impressive, the interior more than makes up for it. There can sometimes be a bit of a wait for food, but it's well worth it. The excellent Bavarian cuisine and friendly service at Ayinger Ottobrunn more than make up for it. In the summer, there's a sunny beer garden for guests, and in the winter, a small curling rink. Despite the long wait, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. Reservations are recommended on weekends, as the restaurant hosts many events, birthdays, and other celebrations. to the website (Article to follow) -

5. HOFKUECHERL - Forstinning
Hofkücherl The Hofkücherl is a must for every fan of Bavarian cuisine. Tucked away in an unassuming farmhouse, it impresses with its exceptionally fine cuisine in Forstinning. It doesn't get more rustic than this. to the article -

6. OLD DISTILLERY - Pullach
Old Distillery The Alte Brennerei is a restaurant in Pullach with high-quality cuisine, creative dishes, and friendly staff. Located in Pullach, it's easily accessible by Munich's S-Bahn (suburban train). In summer, you can dine on a wonderfully sunny terrace, sheltered from prying eyes, while in winter, you'll find a cozy, Bavarian-style dining room. The Alte Brennerei also boasts a fantastic wine cellar. A visit to the Alte Brennerei is definitely worthwhile. 7. WALDHAUS DEININGER WEIHER - Straßlach-Dingharting
Waldhaus Deininger Weiher At the Waldhaus am Deininger Weiher, you can both stay overnight and, of course, enjoy excellent food. The Bavarian cuisine is of a high standard. The portions aren't huge, but they are truly delicious. The small lake right next to the restaurant is ideal for a stroll around it as a post-meal walk – for example, after a tasty Kaiserschmarrn. to the article -

8. WALDGASTHOF BUCHENHAIN - Baierbrunn
Buchenhain Forest Inn The Hotel and Restaurant Buchenhain is located approximately 20-25 minutes from Munich in the southern outskirts. In summer, it boasts a charming little beer garden (including a flea market), while in winter, it offers a cozy atmosphere and setting, as well as fine Bavarian cuisine, exceptionally friendly service, and a comfortable ambiance. to the website (Article to follow) -

9. DINZLER AM IRSCHENBERG - Irschenberg
Dinzler am Irschenberg Admittedly, it's not very convincing from the outside, but the inside more than makes up for it. In summer, the cozy Dinzler impresses with its great terrace and mountain views, as well as good food and even vegan options. to the article -

10. ASCHBACHER HOF - Feldkirchen
Aschbacher Hof The Aschbacher Hof impresses primarily with its breathtaking view of the Alps. You can expect excellent Bavarian cuisine, truly delicious cakes, and very friendly service. The restaurant is also a hotel, and its idyllic location makes it the perfect base for a (culinary) short break. Restaurant Steinsee | The Steinsee restaurant is located about 25 minutes from Munich, overlooking the Steinsee lake, with a spacious terrace and a forest for walks. It couldn't be more idyllic, and the food is delicious too. to the article -

12. SCHLOSSWIRTSCHAFT MAXLRAIN - Maxlrain
Maxlrain Castle Inn The Schlosswirtschaft Maxlrain is located about a 30-40 minute drive from Munich. Once you arrive, you'll find yourself in a wonderful and elegant restaurant. The food is fantastic, the taste incredibly good, and the restaurant itself is simply stunning. Don't miss it on your trip to the surrounding area. The restaurant is located right next to Maxlrain Castle and a golf course. Afterwards, you can enjoy a lovely walk and explore the area. to the website (Article to follow)

1. ARAN - BREAD ENJOYMENT & CAFE CULT - Rosenheim (etc.)
Herzogstand Mountain Inn Aran is likely familiar to discerning Munich residents, especially those who frequent Theatinerstrasse. They offer delicious bread, a wide variety of spreads, and delightful coffee drinks, as well as hot beverages to warm you up. Aran also has locations in Friedrichshafen, two in Rosenheim, Pasing, Landshut, Tegernsee, Speyer, Überlingen, Passau, Sindelfingen, and other areas. Fine, fresh breads, cakes, pastries, and more await you. No matter where you stop, the bread is always delicious. 2. BERGGASTHAUS HERZOGSTAND - Kochel am See
Herzogstand Mountain Inn Only those who are athletic or have taken the cable car can get up here. From a culinary perspective, the Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancake) is particularly noteworthy; it's worth ordering, especially with the perfect view. Kässpatzen (cheese spaetzle), a Brotzzeitbrettl (a traditional German snack platter), fish, and Kaiserschmarrn are perfect for refueling after a hike. 3. CHARIVARI - Schliersee
Charivari Charivari is a restaurant with a café and a spacious terrace, located directly on Lake Schliersee. The cover photo shows the direct view from the terrace. Here you can expect German-Bavarian cuisine: appetizers, soups, salads, game, fish, schnitzel, and more. The food is excellent, but the view (with the option of a boat trip afterward) is an absolute must. 4. CAFÈ MILCHHÄUSL - Schliersee
Charivari | Café Milchhäusl is very cozy, relatively small, and located (like Charivari) directly on Lake Schliersee. At the appropriate time of year, they serve delicious plum cake. The Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancake) was also quite good. The view is wonderful, and from the small, sunny terrace, you can gaze out at the sunlit lake while enjoying your cake. They're open daily, and at lunchtime, they even serve hot meals, such as Käsespätzle (cheese spaetzle). 5. MONTE LAGO - Rottach-Egern
Herzogstand Mountain Inn I've only had drinks here with my companion so far, but I'd recommend you visit because of the cozy atmosphere. It's a comfortable restaurant with an even cozier fireplace lounge, an inviting bar, and simply a perfect ambiance. Located in Rottach-Egern, not far from Lake Tegernsee. Of course, Monte Lago also offers food: from carpaccio and curry to schnitzel and various burgers. They also have a wine cellar. I really enjoyed having a drink in the fireplace lounge and I'll be eating there soon. to the website (Article to follow)

We visited the Camers restaurant at Hohenkammer Castle (Dachau district) at the end of February 2017 and found the food and service to be very good. We will probably go again in May to try the new menu. We would be interested in your review because I read your review of Acquarello in Bogenhausen today. We completely agree with your review and will not be going there again.
