Tagliatelle Emiliana

Osteria Bianchi – Very spontaneously and in a private setting, I recently went to Osteria Bianchi with a friend. It's an Italian restaurant that was recommended to me by an acquaintance. So, I was in the mood for Italian food again. I hadn't made a reservation, so I browsed through the restaurant recommendations I'd received from you all. Osteria Bianchi, located in the Westend district, was at the top of the list. The restaurant has been open for about a year and a half. The menu features typical Italian classics like pizza, pasta, fish, meat, salads, and much more. So, I decided to call in the afternoon to arrange a visit that evening. When I made the reservation over the phone, they told me to just drop by; they didn't ask for my name.

After a bit of searching for parking in Westend – the restaurant is located at Gollierstraße 38 – we finally entered and was surprised by its size and the fact that it was almost completely full. Numerous tables for two, four, and groups were already occupied by a diverse crowd. Young groups, couples in love, older people, and families with children were all milling about. I also liked the ambiance – the high ceilings, the exposed brick walls between the large, bright windows, and the numerous shelves stocked with Italian snacks, wines, and other items in the dining area all fit perfectly into the overall picture. It offered a relaxed and cozy atmosphere, neither too fancy nor too casual.

Selection and evaluation of the dishes

Well…we were noticed immediately upon entering and asked about our reservation. When we were then shown to a cozy table for four in one of the corners – which was my request – we were promptly attended to and the menus were brought to us. We ordered drinks – a house white wine (Sauvignon Blanc DOC „Torre di Vescovi“, Colli Vicentini, Venice for €5.60/0.2l) and a Hugo. I had asked for a Ramazzotti Rosato Spritz, or perhaps a summery drink to combine it – but they didn't have it, so I stuck with the Hugo. Then we turned our attention to the menu. Cleverly, we opted for just an appetizer first and only chose our main courses after finishing it. I highly recommend doing the same, as the appetizers are quite generously portioned, and you might not have the appetite for your main course afterward.

We opted for a vegetarian appetizer platter for two (€11.50). It arrived with various sautéed vegetables, buffalo mozzarella, arugula salad, olives, and bread. The portion was very generous and quite filling. So we changed our plans and ordered two pizzas: one Tagliatelle Emiliana with ham, peas, mushrooms, and cream sauce (€8.90) and one Insalata Caesar with grilled turkey breast, Parmesan, cherry tomatoes, and cream cheese (€12.50). I asked if I could have chanterelle mushrooms instead of the meat, and my request was granted. When the two main courses arrived—very quickly after ordering—we were again surprised by the portion sizes. So you can be sure you'll leave satisfied. Both the appetizers and main courses are fairly generously portioned. My companion's pasta was perfectly al dente and delicately seasoned. For Munich's "Italian food fans," it might seem a bit odd that the cheese—not the separately served Parmesan, but the cheese already on the pasta—was placed on top in a single slice. Unnecessary in my opinion, but after mixing, the cheese was completely incorporated and well distributed. The cream sauce wasn't anything "exciting," but with the mushrooms, peas, and generous amount of ham, it left no room for complaint.

My Caesar salad was a colorful concoction. I have to say it like that. Not that it didn't taste good – on the contrary, the salad was very good and the portion of chanterelles was very generous – no, it just had absolutely nothing to do with a Caesar salad. Neither bread croutons nor Caesar dressing (which I would have recognized as such) were part of the salad. There was a generous mound of peppered cream cheese on the side, which I spooned up along with the chanterelles and salad. The salad also contained tomatoes and olives – rather atypical for a Caesar salad. So, if I had been expecting a typical Italian Caesar salad with bread croutons, nice Parmesan cheese, and the appropriate dressing, I would have been disappointed. But since the salad was incredibly delicious, the mushrooms were more than a fair portion as a substitute for the meat, and overall it was simply a good salad, I was satisfied. I couldn't finish the portion, nor the generously portioned cream cheese, but I would definitely order the salad again.

Here you can also create your own salad, meaning you put together a salad with 5 or 7 ingredients of your choice (€7.90 or €9.50). It's then served in a pizza dough basket with homemade vinaigrette. A couple at the next table had ordered one, and even though I didn't see them, I'm sure they didn't finish it. 😉 So, here too: large portions. Behind me at the table, a fish was being filleted for a guest, and next to me, three different pizzas were being ordered. When I went to wash my hands, I also caught a glimpse of another guest's plate of meat (…I'm guessing it was the "Coniglio al forno" – oven-baked rabbit with oregano, herbs, olives, and potatoes (€14.90)…) and found it attractively presented and a fair portion. Otherwise, you can get numerous different pizzas from €4.60 to €10.50, for example the "Carpaccio" pizza with tomatoes, beef carpaccio, arugula and Grana.

Card payments are accepted at the restaurant. Parking can be difficult to find depending on the time of day and day of the week. Also worth mentioning is the terrace that wraps around the corner of the building, offering numerous tables (some covered by awnings) for comfortable seating and dining. The lunch menu (dishes between €3.90 and €9.50) is available Monday to Saturday from 11:30 am to 3:00 pm, and the dinner menu is available daily from 5:30 pm to 11:00 pm. The restaurant is open for lunch and from 6:00 pm to 1:00 am, and until midnight on Sundays. Garbo and Pescheria are part of Osteria Bianchi.

I will definitely visit Osteria Bianchi again to try their pizza, fish, and risotto. The service was very friendly, and we received excellent advice and service. The ambiance at Osteria Bianchi is also perfect for various occasions, and the value for money is great. We paid €55 including tip for two alcoholic drinks, a bottle of water, a generous starter, and two well-portioned main courses. While it could get a little hectic at times, especially when the restaurant was full, you wouldn't necessarily notice it depending on where you were seated.
