Taverna del Sud is a very good Italian restaurant on Widenmayerstrasse in Lehel with excellent cuisine and very friendly staff. We happened to be passing by hungry and decided to have lunch there.
The restaurant's ambiance is warm and welcoming. It's not overly elegant or palatial: yellow painted walls, pictures on the walls, high ceilings, archways, dark brown furniture, colorful and checkered tablecloths, large round windows, plants on the windowsills, candles on the tables, and comfortable seating areas.
The menu at Taverna del Sud is well-rounded, offering typical Italian dishes, and was presented to us by a friendly waiter immediately after we were seated: aperitifs, soup, antipasti, salads, pasta, pizza, risotto, meat dishes, and Italian desserts such as tiramisu, tartufo, ice cream, amarena cherry sundae, and a selection of cheeses. We opted for a tuna pizza with truffle pasta. For those who don't like truffles, there are many different pasta dishes to choose from: spaghetti aglio e olio, al pomodoro, Bolognese, della Taverna, ai frutti di mare, rigatoni, lasagna, tortelloni, and tagliatelle Emiliana. The usual pizzas are also available.
The truffle pasta was a generous portion, and there was a particularly generous amount of truffle sprinkled over it. The pasta was cooked perfectly, had a delicate flavor, and I thoroughly enjoyed the dish. The pizza was thin, topped with plenty of ingredients, and had a savory taste. Along with the truffle pasta, it arrived promptly after we ordered it. The dessert we ordered afterward—a tiramisu—was also delicious, not too heavy, and not overly alcoholic or cocoa-heavy—something I don't usually like.
The specials menu also features various truffle dishes, such as on carpaccio, risotto, tagliatelle (my choice!), sole fillet, or even on pizza. All dishes – and a selection of wines – can be pre-ordered and taken away from Taverne del Sud. There's also a menu with two different set menus for €28 per person (e.g., a glass of Prosecco, Bresaola Valtellina with arugula and Parmesan, homemade ravioli in butter with sage, turkey medallions, mustard sauce, and dessert).
The staff is very friendly and served us quickly and professionally. You can sit and eat at Taverna del Sud until midnight. Card payments are accepted. Including tip, we paid €34. The restaurant offers a very classic menu, nothing too special, but very delicious and typically Italian. If you're ever in this area, I highly recommend trying Taverna del Sud.
