Celebrating New Year's Eve at home and having positive thoughts – This year has been quite something, hasn't it? – And in addition to the sad certainty that the pandemic still has us firmly in its grip, the extra everyday issues and challenges don't simply disappear. So, 2020 was certainly marked by working from home, the madness of the pandemic, and hurdles to overcome. Nevertheless, or rather precisely because of this, it's important for us to look ahead, think positive thoughts, and appreciate the little things in life. This isn't just wishful thinking or pointless hocus-pocus, but rather a way for each of us to avoid drowning in the flood of daily events and news we're confronted with. As we say goodbye to the year, I'd like to share some tips on how you can cultivate some positive vibes and what helps you feel good.

Looking ahead to Christmas and 2021

Positive thoughts at the end of the year

Of course, not everything can be viewed positively, and some situations, no matter which perspective you choose, simply don't offer anything positive. Nevertheless, I'm convinced that our own mindset and perspective on life fundamentally influence how we feel and how we deal with certain things. Simply put: those who paint everything in a negative light and see things pessimistically find it much harder to be receptive to the good and to see the many beautiful things in life. Whether it's about that important appointment in the afternoon, the acceptance of that dream job, securing a kindergarten place for your child, or the bus that leaves right in front of you—our thoughts greatly influence how we perceive things and how we cope with potential setbacks, whether small or large.

Think positively about the new year and be grateful.

There are scientifically proven tricks for everyday life (and for everyone) that make it possible to think differently and more positively in the long term. For example, I've made it a habit to spend the first five "wakeful minutes" of my day without my phone. Not so easy for me, since my smartphone usually serves as my alarm clock or my first source of information. Since I've stopped using it, what the study on this topic also showed has proven true for me personally: I'm more balanced and content because I automatically take 10 minutes for myself in the morning. Whether it's a coffee in the kitchen, a page to read from a book, or just music I enjoy – I consciously keep the flood of social media news, news reports, and "world chaos" out of my mind and focus on myself and things that are good for me.

What is beautiful in your life, what are you grateful for, and what wonderful things does the future hold?

Taking time each day to appreciate the finer things in life is a habit you can cultivate. Your mind will automatically open up, allowing you to focus on the positive aspects of life that you may have previously overlooked due to the stresses of daily life. This could include a daily warm shower, your own health, a warm home, a full refrigerator, a sunrise or sunset, or even a smile from another person. By sharpening our senses to these small gifts of everyday life, we become more aware of them and develop a more positive outlook on the bigger picture.

New Year's resolutions

The thought process described above also works with regard to the upcoming year, 2021. Ask yourself these specific questions: "What exciting things do I have in store for myself in the new year?", "What will be better than this year?", "What goals am I setting for myself?", "Which people might I see again?", "What have I already accomplished by point X?". Be careful not to formulate your goals and wishes negatively. Avoid negative wordplay like "I'll try not to eat so many sweets anymore" and rephrase your words positively: "Starting in 2021, I'll make sure to eat fewer sweets!" or "A healthy diet is my life goal for 2021." You'll see that you will be successful, and these positive experiences will, in turn, give you energy for further projects and potentially uncontrollable events.

Everything is easier and tastes better with a smile….

Let's think about the upcoming holidays. We all have a warm roof over our heads, people with whom we can spend the Christmas season, and delicious food on our tables. Therefore, we are already far more blessed than many other people in this world. Pay attention to these everyday gifts and be grateful for them. The point is not to succumb to humility, but rather to use this clarity and gratitude to approach our surroundings and daily lives with greater openness.

Personally, I've become a very conscious and grateful person. Even though I've had to work hard for many things, I've been given opportunities that many others don't have. Standing in long lines at the supermarket or being confronted with sold-out food automatically implies the freedom to go shopping and having the financial means to buy food. So now, even in truly difficult situations, I try to see what positives there are. That's why my life isn't perfect from morning till night, but I try to make it as beautiful as possible, both mentally and physically. Try doing the same with your resolutions for 2021.

Mmm, New Year's Eve doughnuts. Delicious! I'm looking forward to them.

Fancy something delicious to end the year?

As I've mentioned in several articles, I live just a stone's throw from a Wünsche bakery. Hardly a day goes by that I'm not there, stocking up on baked goods, sandwiches, – currently – Christmas cookies, or even weekend breakfast. Wünsche bakery has also prepared for us all over Christmas and New Year's, and you can order via Pre-order form for the Wünsche bakery Pre-order your baked goods. Simply choose what you'd like for the holidays and New Year's Eve, either in-store or online, fill out the form, and hand it in at the bakery. You can then pick everything up the next day without worrying about earlier customers snatching up your favorites. Of course, you can also fill out the form directly at the bakery and hand it in. In that case, be sure to check out the specialty doughnuts available at the bakery counters around New Year's Eve – there are eggnog, vanilla cream, chocolate cream, and bee sting doughnuts.

Fresh baked goods for the holidays – pre-order now!

I am personally really looking forward to December 31st, 2020, when I will put on my winter clothes and pick up a "strawberry prosecco doughnut" from the Wünsche bakery (only available on New Year's Eve).

With that in mind, I wish you not only a wonderful Christmas, but also positive thoughts for every single day. Make yourselves comfortable at home and remember to protect yourselves, your health, and the health of your loved ones and fellow human beings. Start the new year with positive thoughts and think of me at least once when enjoying a delicious treat on your Christmas or New Year's Eve table. 😉
