NEW OPENING: „Sir Helga“ in Lehel | "Staying hungry is a good advice for life. But life just took you to Sir Helga."„ (Staying hungry is good advice for life. But life has just brought you to Sir Helga.) , "Enjoy life" are the first words you'll read when you visit the website of the newly opened restaurant "Sir Helga" in Lehel. It's a reminder not to take life too seriously and to enjoy it to the fullest. We all know that good food is sometimes the best way to do this. Sir Helga skillfully combines the enjoyment of life with good food, a relaxed atmosphere, great drinks, and a coherent concept, complete with a chic interior and warm service. My companion and I visited Sir Helga for a while.

This way to Sir Helga – arrive and relax, just like at home.

Getting to know Sir Helga

Before visiting a new restaurant in person, I always check out its website first. I want to get a feel for the place and, of course, look at some photos and the menu beforehand. At Sir Helga, located in Lehel, the quote above and the invitation "Feel at home" immediately caught my eye. A successful goal for a restaurant, in my opinion: to serve high-quality food while simultaneously creating a living-room atmosphere and a welcoming ambiance – just like at home – because we all generally feel good and the food tastes good at our own dining table, right? Sir Helga is therefore both a place to arrive and unwind, and a place to recharge – free from stress and hectic pace, but packed with friendliness and truly delicious soul food on the menu. Sir Helga specifically targets both locals and tourists – everyone is welcome as a guest, and everyone is treated like a friend.

It looks really cozy, doesn't it?

I really like that Sir Helga invites you to enjoy lunch or dinner in a private atmosphere with friends and loved ones, but it's also a great place to simply sip a latte macchiato at your work laptop. You can also sit alone at the bar, meet new people, make new friends, and unwind after a stressful day – the drinks are perfect for that. In short: everyone is welcome at the stylish Sir Helga; a feeling you'll experience the moment you walk in.

Sir Helga first opened in March 2021, initially offering delivery and takeaway services due to the circumstances. After the lockdown ended and restaurants reopened, dining in at Sir Helga became possible for the first time, in compliance with regulations. Why not take a look around? – I personally love the skillful blend of chic and stylish, cozy and hip. For example, the walls are adorned with color-coordinated jungle-themed wallpaper featuring green foliage; various gold table and ceiling lamps with countless crystals provide pleasant lighting; plush sofas and cushions, along with carefully chosen decorative elements, contribute to the inviting atmosphere at Sir Helga. Your drinks are mixed behind the stylish Sir Helga Bar, where you can also enjoy food and drinks. Simply cozy all around.

The starters: beef tartare and vegan tarte flambée with kale and pumpkin

My personal visit to Sir Helga

My companion and I took a seat at a small, round table to the side of the bar, which was nice and quiet. As soon as we sat down, we were given the food and drink menus, as well as a bottle of water. I appreciate that both tables for two and larger groups are available. Right after we sat, we decided on two drinks from the bar menu. When we asked, the friendly bartender told us that both the food and drink menus featured new seasonal creations. We gladly accepted his recommendations and ordered the "Peace, Love & Vodka" with Parliament Vodka, apple, pomegranate, elderflower, and thyme, as well as the autumnal and brand-new "Lazy Mandarin" with Bacardi Rum, Amaretto, mandarin orange, and orange. The drinks were excellent! Very fresh, fruity, and a perfect start to the evening. After a rather long look at the food menu (you know that feeling when there are just too many tempting options?), we decided on our appetizers. I personally always choose dishes that everyone at the table likes, so that it's easy to share, swap, and try things. For example, we chose "regional beef tartare with bread, mustard, and salad" and a vegan "tarte flambée with pumpkin, hummus, and kale.".

Delicious! Tagliatelle with fennel, crayfish and lobster sauce

The cocktails had barely been emptied when the dishes arrived. The steak tartare was plentiful and very well seasoned. Every connoisseur knows: a good steak tartare can sometimes reveal the quality of a kitchen. 😉 I gave my salad to my companion in exchange for half of the tarte flambée. I was particularly impressed by the combination of kale and pumpkin – a truly successful taste experience and the start of a new passion of mine: kale! The tarte flambée dough was also beautifully crisp, super thin, and crunchy. So, if you have vegans with you, or are vegan yourself, that's no problem at all, as they offer both vegan appetizers and main courses.

For our main courses, we opted for "Duck breast with pointed cabbage, sweet potato mash, and cranberry sauce" and "Tagliatelle with fennel, crayfish, and lobster sauce"—my personal favorite. We each enjoyed a glass of open white and red wine—it's best to ask for recommendations on what would pair well with your meal. The main courses were a culinary triumph for both of us. The duck breast was beautifully pink, tender, and its flavor perfectly complemented the sweetness of the sweet potato mash and the cranberry sauce. My tagliatelle had the perfect al dente texture, the fennel was subtle but not overpowering, and the crayfish were plentiful. My pasta dish was also wonderfully creamy, just the way I like it.

This is how duck breast should be! Tender, pink, and perfectly combined.

I really appreciate that Sir Helga cooks seasonally and, wherever possible, with regional ingredients. This means that the food and even the drinks menu adapts to the time of year, and ingredients are preferably sourced from local vendors and partners. It's a strategy I always find very appealing, and especially important these days for our community and our environment. Why not take a look at the... Sir Helga's Menu and choose the perfect cocktails to go with them from the Bar menu That's it. I can wholeheartedly recommend my 'program'; if you're just looking for a starter to share, I recommend the tarte flambée.

Hard facts and personal opinion

Sir Helga in Munich is the first of several planned openings in various major German cities – openings in Berlin Friedrichshain and Düsseldorf are also planned – so stay tuned. In the meantime, why not visit the new opening in Lehel and experience the Bavarian Sir Helga? Parking can be a bit of a challenge, but the S-Bahn, U-Bahn, tram, and bus are all within walking distance; and we all have bikes, right? ;-).

Even though temperatures are currently dropping steadily and winter is just around the corner, warmer days will return. Look forward to enjoying them on a sunny terrace along Mariannenstraße. I already sat on Sir Helga's terrace for my first oat milk cappuccino of the season, soaking up the warming sun. Having now also enjoyed a substantial meal and delicious drinks, I can wholeheartedly recommend a visit to Sir Helga. Thumbs up for the fantastic soul food, the warm service, the inviting atmosphere, and the newly created Munich hotspot! Be sure to stop by and say hi to the Sir Helga team and…of course!…Helga herself. 😉
