Traditional Bavarian cuisine at the Wirtshaus am Bavariapark || Just a stone's throw from Munich's Theresienwiese, arguably the world's most famous folk festival grounds, lies the Wirtshaus am Bavariapark. The restaurant is known for its excellent Bavarian cuisine, good Augustiner beer, and sunny hours in its adjoining Bavarian beer garden – sometimes with a self-service area. Dine in a cozy atmosphere; the menu features Bavarian classics as well as vegetarian and vegan delicacies. The Wirtshaus also offers a changing weekly menu. I was there and now I'm taking you along for the ride.

Get to know the inn at Bavariapark

Haven't heard of the Wirtshaus am Bavariapark yet? – Let's change that! Located on the former fairgrounds, right between the German Museum's Transport Museum and Bavariapark, this inn is just a stone's throw from the Theresienwiese and the world-famous Bavaria statue, where you can enjoy excellent Bavarian cuisine.

The restaurant, complete with a beer garden adjacent to Bavariapark, opened in 2007; since summer 2011, it has been run by the warm and welcoming Sedgwick family as tenants. Philip Sedgwick has worked as a culinary director in Bangkok and Hong Kong, as well as head chef in a renowned gourmet restaurant. He has also worked at a well-known Michelin-starred restaurant in Munich and in trendy Parisian establishments. Sabine Sedgwick also brings experience in the restaurant and hotel industry, having worked in prestigious establishments, including those on Lake Tegernsee in Bavaria, in Lugano, Rome, Paris, and Hong Kong.

As soon as the sun comes out, the beautiful beer garden beckons.

The inn is divided into two cozy, inviting rooms with space for up to 90 guests and a banquet hall that can accommodate another 300 hungry people. It is also the perfect location for events, functions, and celebrations (weddings, birthdays, etc.) of all kinds.

The aforementioned beer garden can accommodate approximately 850 beer garden enthusiasts – naturally with a cool Augustiner Maß (liter of beer) under shady chestnut trees, just as you would expect in a proper Bavarian beer garden. Everything from the regular menu can be ordered.

The culinary concept of the Wirtshaus am Bavariapark is classically Bavarian, high-quality, and regional, as well as honest and transparent. The standard menu is seasonally adjusted to ensure adherence to the most important criterion: "the freshest possible products." The high quality and local origin of the products are, of course, equally important. The Wirtshaus maintains long-standing partnerships with many regional suppliers. In addition to beer specialties from Augustiner Bräu, you'll find coffee from Fausto, pretzels from Bäcker Piller, cakes from Café Schuntner in Munich's west end, fresh produce from Münchner Frischeparadies, schnapps and brandies from Tegernsee, and much more. For the entire product range, in addition to being fresh and regional, seasonal, hormone-free, GMO-free, and pesticide-free, is also a priority. Time for a look at the menu, isn't it?

The menu at the inn at Bavariapark

I really appreciate that the menu at the Wirtshaus am Bavariapark (Bavaria Park Inn) details the products used and their quality on the first page. For example, you learn that the inn uses Bavarian straw-fed pork from the Munich area; the eggs come from free-range chickens and are certified organic; the milk is also locally sourced; and even the olive oil is organic (from sunny Greece). Personally, I find that food is much more enjoyable and satisfying when you know where it comes from and that everything is top-notch in terms of quality and sustainability.

Let's start with "there's always something to eat," meaning the appetizers. Here you'll find – quite traditional and delicious – Obazda (a Bavarian cheese spread), a Brotzeitbrettel (a platter of cold cuts and cheeses), Bavarian or Swiss sausage salad, or a cabbage or side salad to begin with. After that, you'll be introduced to the soups (beef broth with handmade Maultaschen (Swabian ravioli) or homemade goulash soup with malt bread), the salad (optionally with two fried slices of goat cheese), and the crispy Flammkuchen (a type of flatbread) in four different varieties (classic with bacon and cheese; Greek with feta cheese; with wild salmon and shrimp; or vegan with vegetables).

Rostbratwurst sausages made from straw-fed pork! Seven pieces with barrel-fermented sauerkraut. Simply delicious.

Then it's on to the "favorite delicacies" on the menu. In this main category, ten different Bavarian specialties await you. There's oven-fresh roast pork, Munich schnitzel, seven types of grilled sausage from straw-fed pork, "Bauern-Gröstl" (farmer's hash), Wiener schnitzel, venison goulash, currywurst from straw-fed pork, browned Maultaschen (vegetarian option), Käsespätzle (cheese spaetzle), and bread dumplings.

Before the various desserts are presented to you on the menu, there are a few dishes for the little guests.

For the sweet finale, you can choose between oven-warm apple strudel, ice cream (demeter organic certified), freshly made Kaiserschmarrn, or cake from the display case.

Be sure to check out the drinks and wine list. The Wirtshaus am Bavariapark has a great selection of wines (by the glass). If you'd like to see the complete food, breakfast, and drinks menu again, you can do so in the box below.

Don't miss the pub breakfast on Sunday!

Breakfast at the inn on Sunday

Recently, the Wirtshaus am Bavariapark has started offering a fantastic Sunday breakfast every Sunday from 9:30 am to 2:00 pm. Here, too, 'quality over quantity' is the motto, and so the breakfast menu is concise yet carefully curated, ensuring there's something for every breakfast lover – from bacon muffins and white sausages to French toast in a sweet cinnamon egg coating, and organic fried eggs with bacon and grilled sausages.

You can also create your own breakfast and order a selection of sausages, ham, and/or cheeses, bread, butter, honey, jam, pretzels and rolls (even gluten-free), and egg dishes made to order. I also appreciate that there are a few "non-Bavarian" breakfasts on the menu, such as the "Hawaii Power Bowl" with granola, banana chips, pineapple, goji berries, mango, chia seeds, and coconut milk, or the "Waikiki Revolution" with granola, banana chips, blueberries, goji berries, chia and flax seeds, cashew nuts, and vanilla soy milk. An added bonus: they even offer various breakfast options for children.

Note my gaze at the sausages while drinking the shandy 😉

My personal visit to the inn at Bavariapark

As mentioned, I was of course there to try it out. My companion and I started with an Augustiner wheat beer and a "Rosato Mio" made with Ramazzotti Rosato, Prosecco, and basil – wonderfully refreshing and a perfect start for classic aperitif fans like myself. 🙂

My dining companion ordered the goulash soup as a starter, and I ordered a classic tarte flambée – sharing it with others. Definitely a good decision. My tarte flambée was beautifully crisp, pre-cut into manageable pieces, and served on a Bavarian wooden board. The meat in the goulash soup was wonderfully succulent, and the portion was just right – warming and satisfying (even if you're not very hungry).

After that, we ordered – yes, we arrived with quite an appetite 😉 – the Wiener Schnitzel made from Bavarian veal with roasted Grenaille potatoes, cranberries, and a small salad, as well as the Rostbratwurst sausages made from straw-fed pork on barrel-fermented sauerkraut with a slice of malt bread. We didn't have to wait long all evening and felt very well looked after.

Conclusion: Come along and enjoy Bavarian hospitality and high-quality food.

The Rostbratwurst sausages – made from straw-fed pork, nice and crisp, and absolutely delicious – were yet another example of why I shouldn't always agree to my companion's "sharing" suggestions right away. 😉 They were so incredibly tasty that I was very reluctant to exchange them for the Wiener Schnitzel, meaning I gave up my half of the sausages. But when I tasted the Wiener Schnitzel with its wonderfully golden-yellow breading, my deal wasn't so bad after all. 😉 The Wiener Schnitzel – two of them, of course – was beautifully tender, thinly breaded, and absolutely perfect – and you know what that means! The Grenaille potatoes were also cooked to my liking, ideally portioned, and a perfect accompaniment to the schnitzel.

Worth a trip in itself: the fluffy Kaiserschmarrn!

The crowning glory was the Kaiserschmarrn served afterwards for sharing. Even before it arrived, someone was saying, "Bianca, you're about to get the best Kaiserschmarrn in town!" 🙂 Quite a bold statement, right? – And indeed, it was practically unbeatable in terms of lightness and fluffiness. These days, one glance at my plate is enough for me to know immediately if the Kaiserschmarrn has been freshly made and torn into pieces. – It had, so I didn't leave a single scrap, repeatedly dipping the torn pieces into the applesauce and constantly exclaiming, "Wow, this is good!".

Overall, my companion and I had a truly wonderful evening. This was due in no small part to the exceptionally attentive service, the inviting atmosphere, and of course, the delicious food. In short: you will definitely taste the quality and freshness!

We felt very comfortable, and even before we left the inn at Bavariapark, I said to my companion, "That was absolutely fantastic, wasn't it?" "Yes! We'll definitely be back!" was the reply. 🙂 So do check it out! If it weren't worth it, I certainly wouldn't be raving about it.
